I have fished the waters off Chatham for 10 years or so out of my friends boat, and we are very successful in all the classic articficial presentations. And yes I am one of the few who really enjoy wire line fishing. We have our own system so to speak with gear and presetations that we like. That said we never really bait fish much. I just purchased a boat (trailered) last year and want to get into bait fishing a bit more - most likely some chunking, and fishing clams as well as eels. I also want to try this "tog" thing as I have never caught one but since I am mobile I can launch out of different areas to target different species.

My question is - for this type of bait fishing are you all using braid with a leader or straight mono? What types/lb ratings? Why?

Im using basicall the same as I would on my surf set ups. Im spooling my calcutta with 50# suffix to a 50# ande leader material. This is my eeling, pogie, set up.

Nah, you can use braid and a longer leader just fine....

200 series Newells w/ 50 or 60lb braid and 6-7ft medium action glass rods (20-40lb) will get the job done for most everything....

7ft med/mh glass rods, Avet SXs is my setup. If same as surf, I use braid (various lb) with leader - but I use Ande Mono on top not the actual leader material. That makes it easy - I just didnt know if guys really liked the full mono setup and if so why? I would guess sensitivity of braid is just as important in bait as jigs/plugs.

Yes, you want to feel the tap tap of the bite so use braid. Plan to be schooled for awhile, they can drive you crazy at times but sure are fun to catch.

i found the braid with a long leader was great for tog fishing, and i got to compare it to a full mono set up i have as well. I spooling suffix on everything this year.
