If moss, use a wide putty knife to get off what you can without damaging shingles. Spray with cut bleach. Bob Thomas 03-25-2012, 03:29 PM I used the cut bleach. I also looked into z-stop to prevent the moss. Looked good but ended up with a new roof instead. Still may put the z-stop on Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device tattoobob 03-25-2012, 07:33 PM Ross, Well it's all black in the area and green moss growing where the shingles overlap tattoobob 03-25-2012, 07:37 PM Now that I googled lichen it has some of that also Raven 03-26-2012, 12:51 AM nope - you can spray with an algae- cide it's for cement but it should work just as well on shingles similar to using bleach i suppose but designed for it fishsmith 03-26-2012, 10:46 AM if you've got branches overhanging the roof, take them down. vineyardblues 03-26-2012, 11:58 AM I have to tell a quick story :: Grammy said that Grampy burt his balls :rotf2: TRUE story a few years back He was like spiderman with bleach cleaning off the moss / etc , came inside and fell asleep in the chair , only to wake up with his balls on fire because of the bleach on his pants /shorts Beware :uhuh: Raven 03-26-2012, 12:23 PM which is WHY i recomended the ALGAE killer - does the same thing without the bleach smell or hazards paradoxjim 03-26-2012, 03:55 PM The algaecide will also burn your balls? Piscator 03-26-2012, 04:33 PM The algaecide will also burn your balls? but will it also get the alge of them? A friend of mine wants to know.............. basswipe 03-26-2012, 06:25 PM Jomax and bleach in a bug sprayer.Light scrup and rinse.Done. Slingah 03-26-2012, 08:06 PM Use bleach or liquid pool shock(sodium hypochlorite) and T.S.P. or Jomax in a pump up sprayer. Wet roof FIRST and all surrounding plants, bushes, grass etc. with plain water...then apply mix to roof. Let the chemical do the work. Sometimes a second application is needed. Don't be afraid of the bleach....it will NOT hurt asphalt shingles and is the ONLY thing that will work. bleach is 6% sodium hypoclorite liquid pool shock is about 12% sodium hypoclorite I buy pool shock at Ocean State Job Lot to do all my exterior cleaning. Slingah 03-26-2012, 09:26 PM Also in my experience with lichen it is better to not scrape or scrub the lichen off but to just treat the roof with the mix, kill the stuff and let it eventually just die, dry up and fall off. If you scrape it it will pull off the granules on the surface of the shingle. Raven 03-26-2012, 11:51 PM i used to clean pools out in Cali and one day unloading the truck a mishap occurred where i got pure chlorine in my eye..... man did i run for a sink Fast! so what Slingah said but add some eye protection to prevent splash back.... vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
