View Full Version : Quincy Herring Run
Typhoon 03-29-2012, 05:54 AM I just saw that town brook in Quincy has herring in it. People familiar with Quincy, does town brook empty into Black's Creek?
I've seen some of the newer citizens of quincy illegally dip netting further down in Black's Creek.
I'm wondering if they're dip netting for herring.
If so, EPs gonna get a call. I'm going to make sure that I'm down there once a day.
sokinwet 03-29-2012, 06:19 AM Might be netting grass shrimp?
Mike J. 03-29-2012, 06:32 AM Might be netting grass shrimp?
Even if they are getting shrimp, do you think they would pass on the herring? I doubt it.
I would call and let the EPO's make an appearance and see whats happening.
Piscator 03-29-2012, 06:42 AM Might be netting grass shrimp?
No way.............
JohnR 03-29-2012, 08:19 AM Smelt?
Typhoon 03-29-2012, 08:20 AM I could call once a day on illegal shellfishing at low tide.
Typhoon 03-29-2012, 08:30 AM I'm going to help organize a cleanup of town brook in Quincy.

Piscator 03-29-2012, 08:35 AM Typhoon,
I'm pretty sure Town Brook empties into the Town River and Furnace Brook empties into Blacks Creek then Wally World.
Typhoon 03-29-2012, 09:00 AM Thanks. Either way they riff-raff are hanging out at the Furnace Brook parkway bridge and dip netting for something.
I'm going to investigate with my cell phone camera.

JohnR 03-29-2012, 09:45 AM It's been 15 years since I have lived there but late smelting is something to be considered - though I think that is now out of season
Typhoon 03-29-2012, 09:50 AM The smelting crowd and the dip netting crowd are two very distinct demographics.
FishermanTim 03-29-2012, 10:12 AM What harm would it do to have them check it out?
Heck, at the very least it would get them to check for licenses.
As we are all too familiar knowing that there are always going to be people that don't know the fishing rules and don't care to learn them because they won't ever get a license to do so.
Make the call!
Piscator 03-29-2012, 10:17 AM I made some calls and texts to my friends on the QPD for frequent checks. Reaching out to EP's will help even more as they are closer to the laws and regs.
MAKAI 03-29-2012, 11:02 AM I walk the dog across that little bridge over blacks creek often.
The men squat down near the edge chain smoking lucky strikes and send the women underneath with fine mesh dip nets. You wouldn't believe the amount of grass shrimp they put in the coolers. along with anything with a molecule of protein in it.
I made a guy throw a 20 " bass back in the water near there after telling him he'd be swimming too if he didn't.
" Feesh dat big trow back ? " " No way ! "
:cens:
" Me no know ? "
Typhoon 03-29-2012, 11:09 AM Makai, you don't happen to live Willet st do you?
There's a truck on Willet st with a S-B sticker , with a guy that walks his dog.
I live on Cummings Ave.
Piscator 03-29-2012, 11:12 AM What time of day does this happen?
QPD will do checks but they don't have training or enforcement powers in that area (Furnace Brook Pky is also a State road). They can deter but can't do much else. The key is to inform Environmental Police.

Awesome!! , I loved it when the Navy reinstated the use of the First navy Jack after 9-11 on all commissioned Ships and Subs in recognition of the Navy's committment to the Global War On Terrorism. :)
I've seen herring in the town brook in Quincy Center a few times, but not for a couple of years. Doesn't mean that they are not there, just haven't seen them -

Raider Ronnie 03-30-2012, 06:36 AM Gee Andrew.
You go on FB last week announcing your wife is expecting/pregnant and from reply there you got yourself in the dog house with the wife for not getting her approval of the announcement, now your posting a pic of your house and in the thread naming your street.
Think it's time to step away from the computer ?

pot meet kettle
I agree, I should've not put my street name. I guess that is pretty naive.
I actually welcome meeting new people, hence why I encourage people walking their dog by my house to introduce themselves. I'm the king of networking, hence the job in sales.
JohnR 03-30-2012, 06:53 AM Typhoon - when you get advice from someone that that talks too much on the internet it is something to consider. Oh, hi Ronnie:rotf2:

in California the old trick was to put a sealed Jar 3/4 full of water
on the lawn... i don't know why but dogs won't go there.
the other trick although it will burn some grass is to pee in another
jar and sprinkle it early on his spot in the morning
which claims it in his mind as YOUR territory
dogs are scent ruled!

No, Ronnie - that is Sunday and Monday. Fridays are when we pick on the Oakland Faders ;)
Mike J. 03-30-2012, 11:52 AM Is it possible they are dip netting Elver Eels? Just read an article about this in Maine where 1 pound of elvers may fetch $2200 for those few with licenses. They are in huge demand on the asian market.
MAKAI 03-30-2012, 12:52 PM Btw. My dog is partial to the Quincy Commons. Next time we stroll that way and your lights are on I'll give a knock. Though she's 12 yrs old and prefers to be taken for rides now.
