View Full Version : Android Boating/WX Apps?
IpswichBayFish 05-01-2012, 01:06 PM Hi Everyone,
Wondering if anyone has come across an app, specifically for Andriod, they find useful for boating.
Ideally I would like one that encompasses radar, weather, wind and possibly surface conditions - like seas, swells etc. It would be great to go to an app and instantly know how rough it is and whether or not it'll be smooth enough to check my 'recreational' lobster traps that day BEFORE I get there.
I have a portable VHF I sometimes listen to prior to heading out but it can be a drag listening to the robotic voice and waiting for my area to come up.
Thanks!

jonserfish 05-02-2012, 06:18 AM I have used my droid x2 nav/map in the kayak before trying to locate spa island while trolling. I thought that was pretty cool. I wouldn't rely on it for getting closer than 50' near hazards but definately helped me out last fall in the dark.
saltyric 05-02-2012, 06:31 AM Sea Tow app is pretty sweet for tide, weather, compass data
Navionics app is awesome for charting, etc
Weather by Bluefin is a great app for sea condition forecasts (links to NOAA)

X3 it does it all, but still limited in resolution if you want detail.
The seatow app is good too.
repirts 05-02-2012, 02:57 PM Is anyone else having trouble with the Seatow app. Worked fine the other day but now seems to be having trouble getting a gps fix?
Typhoon 05-03-2012, 06:52 AM NECN weather has a really good radar feature

x2 but use only for the radar, no other info available
Roger 05-03-2012, 07:05 PM x2 but use only for the radar, no other info available
NECN: FYI, in portrait orientation it gets 10 day and hourly forecasts and alerts. That all disappears when the phone is held landscape.
piemma 05-04-2012, 08:20 AM If any of you guys have a Garmin GPS on a NMEA2000 network, check this out. I bought one last year and love it.

IpswichBayFish 05-04-2012, 09:18 AM Thanks everyone for the great information. Update: I downloaded the free version of the Marine Weather by Bluefin. I love the quick access to tidal information. One thing I may be missing though - I can't seem to find the information for wave size estimates, small craft advisories etc.... Am I not enabling the right "layer" or is that something that I have to upgrade to the pay version to access?
This is what I was really hoping for from the app.
Anyone know?
Thanks guys.

Try MagicSeaWeed ap, I think I remember paying a fee ($0.99 - $1.99) to get the Pro version with nice real time conditions at least for wind/waves. Doesn't give SC adv...
