If a candidate commits a hate crime, does it end his chances of winning?

No one will remember this come November. I don't like the story, but he was a teenager. How many of us are the same people today, with the same values, that we were as teenagers.


Ted Kennedy was a fully-grown adult when he did something a lot worse than this, and that didn't derail his career.

The reasons for such behavior are rooted in hormonal changes
and a lack of wiz-dom at that particular time.

We need a President who can MANAGE money not a president
who's greatest asset is in delivering a speech full of promises.

Hate crimes of today may not have been hate crimes of yesterday...calling an italian a warp or quinea today is a hate crime where it was not in the 50's or 60's using the N word was not either.

Anyway... this will not hurt Rommney winning the presidency....there will not be four more years of OBAMA!!!

The story on it's own isn't that telling, but what is important is how it will be used to "frame" Romney's character.

Certainly there's an effort to paint Romney as so elite he's really out of touch with everything, even the feelings of others. The dog story reinforces the frame, this story reinforces the frame. His 10,000 bet reinforces the frame...there's a lot of example.

His reaction to the question wasn't really very human. Basically he said I don't remember, I didn't even know he was gay, excuse, excuse....

What he should have done as a LEADER was turn the question into a teaching moment about bullying and how it impacts everyone. This would have made it seem like he had a clue.

What are peoples thoughts of Romney as Governor of Massachusetts? From what I remember, I thought he did a pretty good job and was fairly well liked (as was Bill Weld I think too). Not too much talk about those times (except for the Healthcare part…….)

"The Washington Post on Friday found itself the subject of growing criticism for running an article on Mitt Romney’s high school pranks, including one in which he allegedly hacked off a fellow student's long, bleached hair while the boy was being held down by school bullies.

The Post piece implied that the Romney incident had haunted the student, John Lauber. Thirty years later he bumped into a witness to the event and described it as "horrible."

Lauber died of liver cancer in 2004. His family attacked the article. His sister Christine told ABC News that she knew nothing about the bullying incident and that the story had factual inaccuracies.

“If he were alive today, he would be furious,” she said. “Even if it did happen, John probably wouldn’t have said anything.”

Betsy Lauber, another of John’s sisters, said the family was upset the incident, that allegedly happened 47 years ago in 1965, is being used to further a political agenda.

Ben Shapiro, writing on Breitbart.com pointed out that the Washington Post had quietly changed its own story after it had claimed that Stu White, a high school friend of Romney’s, had long been bothered by the Lauber incident. White told ABC News that he had not been present and had not been aware of it.

The Washington Post story reports: “I always enjoyed his pranks,” said Stu White, a popular friend of Romney’s who went on to a career as a public school teacher and has long been bothered by the Lauber incident.”

ABC News, says: “White was not present for the prank, in which Romney is said to have forcefully cut a student’s long hair and was not aware of it until this year when he was contacted by the Washington Post.”

"It was irresponsible of the Post to run the hit piece in the first place, especially given its obvious bias; to retract a critical phrase and replace it without noting the retraction is just as bad," wrote Shapiro, who called the piece “unconscionable.”

When the auto industry first started going big time advertising on TV , all the different companies had come to the following conclusion. Never say bad things about your competitors cars. Always advertise that having a car , any car was a great thing for everyone but show how your car was the best of all the very good cars. They did this because they knew that saying bad things about other competitors cars would eventually lead to a negative view of cars and driving that in the long run would hurt the industry and cause them all to have less success.

The same applies in politics. There was a time when candidates talked about their rivals with respect. Now its all muck raking and trying their best to destroy the other guys character and respectability. This leads exactly where the car makers knew all this negative stuff would lead. Zero respect by the American people for all candidates. Choosing to vote for the lesser of evils vs the best candidate, a worldwide view of the USA and its leaders as untrustworthy people who live immoral lives and just hope not to get caught.

Its a sad state of affairs in politics now.

McCain ran a very, very positive campaign in 2008. He didn't win.

I agree with you 100%. And this presidential campaign will be the worst we'll ever see, for a variety of reasons. (1) Obama will have close to a billion dollars (2) Obama can't point to his accomplishments, because he has almost none, his record is pathetic, all he can do is say "the other guy is worse", and (3) Obama has shown us, in 2008, that he has no qualms with mudslinging.

Romney can't let Obama hit him without hitting back. McCain tried to take the high road, and he didn't get any points for that.

I agree with you it's upsetting. This summer is really going to be something.

The Dems will let it drop. The Repub (who just spent 5 years crying that we had a Kenyan born, Muslim Socialist as pres.) would be running an ad campaign as we speak.
