This one was in about 1 foot of water when he hit today......lower Elizabeths. Fun.

I'm prepared for these toothy fighters. I like catching them. They are fun if you're geared right. Nice catch!!

I haven't run into any yet but I hope to see more of them this season. They can be frustrating at times but I was concerned last year only catching a half dozen of them all season. The last two years have been really slow for bluefish in my areas...

I love catching them, I even like eating them, but I hate unhooking the slimy bastages, with those evil yellow eyes that follow your fingers looking for any little opening to remove one. :err:

Nice fish Numby...hate wasting good plugs on blues...time to dig out the rejects! That's reject finishes to the eyes of the fisherman, most fish don't care.:rotf2:

I've unhooked thousands in my life, and only managed to get a glancing nip once. :grins:

I wish we had more up this way, they are a ton of fun

Got my first last week and of course it hit a pearl white storm 9 in. Oh well it's the cost of doing business... :)

Never been bitten by a blue, lucky I suppose for all of them I caught. Use to grab plug and lift them out of the water, which is a stoopid act in and of itself. Then I would place them down and take out hook. Did this when my reflexes were sharp as anything. I have seen many people with multiple stitches in the back of the hand from bad dealings with them critters though. I am extremely careful now. A bad cut from one of those fishes could get you a lot more than stitches and lay you down for the season.

my akita, "niko", got nipped down at race pt right on the tip of his nose. after he regained his composure he proceeded to chew the head off it.

Love catching them but hate unhooking them. I've never been nipped, but I've got hooks stuck in my hand because of them thrashing around while removing the plug. Fortunately, I've never required a trip to the doctor for removal.

Funniest thing I've ever seen was the iron man losing the very tip of a finger to a 12 incher that he was trying to stringer for a tournament. I think his yelling woke up most of Aquidneck :hihi:

I can't wait for them to get up here. Really want to get into some big ones on the fly.

Had one attached to my left shin via a treble hook on a pencil one red eye morning at the canal. Still half a nice scar.

Had a gator thrash a trebble from a pencil into my calf at RP during a blitz. Blitzes seem to be my downfall, as I have been hooked twice trying to hard for the quick release to get the plug back out there. Had about a 4-5 #er bite my hand once during another blitz. Kind of was hanging off of me like a piece of jewelry. I punched if with my other hand to get him off. Left a little scar.

i just hate their smell. you can catch bass all night and be fine, but one blue you smell like you spent the night working in a processing plant.

Had a 5#er attached to a Surf Howdy attached to my index finger, right hand, via trebble hook in one side and out other, on Carpenter's Bar a hundred yards from shore.

Now you guys that fish with me see why I hate plugs... never had a problem unhooking them with a single 7/0 or 9/0 hook.....

I like how they stink, you can smell em comin a mile away :grins:

They're made for the sand beaches, cuz you can bring em up, step on them and take out the hooks with relative ease, they're covered in sand so easy to tail grab after. Compared to on a boat as they're sliding around deck, or on a rock in the darkness with nothing but your hands to grab at them. even my handy gripper tool is useless becuase they like to freak out so much when they see you.

Just wait for the right moment, pin em down and yank out the hook. pretty easy on the beach

Don't ever bring them in a Kayak :shocked:....Ever!!

I agree 100%...Probably the best description of Bluefishing Ive read on this site.
For what its worth...when the Bluefishing gets hot n heavy,I allways switch over to bucktails.I like the odds of having to deal with just that one single hook in that mouthful of teeth.

Im going bluefishing today. Love the bastarrds from a beach. I thought i had a 50 one night on block while fishing an eel. It was about a 15 minute fight. Foul hooked with a circle hook right under the pectoral fin. 15 pounds, an awesome fight, but i was more than a little let down when i lit her up on the sand.

i do love catching big blues. there actually meaner than both of my x mother in laws combined. my bluefish bag has 6 pencils or reg. poppers. plugs are a min. of 6" long. never been bit in over 50 yrs. catching. there is no trebel hook in the middle. take it off. i put a 4x, 5/0 j hook, short shanked, on the end. crush the barb. now you can grab the plug, give it a shake or two, and your ready to go. there is really no need to stand on a fish. see it all the time. a 200lb. guy standing on a 5 lb. blue. give them a fighting chance.

caught a big one on a plug in Barnstable this morning via boat. Even got the plug back.

I agree. If one has to handle the fish, all it takes is a firm grip behind the head to safely unhook a blue---oh year---pliers too. :D

My all time favorite thing to throw is 2-3oz Kastmaster(single hook of course) with a really hefty 18-24" steel leader.Pole/reel and line..............just needs to be able to handle the tackle busters,its amazing what a 15-20lb blue can do to tackle.22lbs is my all time largest.I actually spend a fare amount of time targeting bluefish.
