Had a very short day today so I was fishing between deluges and got into some shad.Hooked several but was only able to land one.

Like a little mini tarpon,very fun on lite tackle.Glad I still had the schoolie rod in the trunk!

They are very fun. Soft little mouths on those guys.

If my memory is correct the first hickory shad I ever saw was caught by Nebe under the light at the Ocean Mist. Perhaps on a teaser? At that point things get fuzzy.

AND.....they are great bait!!!!!

I usually jig them up at my favorite bridge, and live-line them for bass.

Live line it. they're great striper bait.

I found these insanely microscopic diamond jigs in the bowels of my tackle mess, they seem to like them because the hookup ratio is much better.Shad dart would probably work very well too I would think?

I'm quite surprised that I've been able to encounter them several times over the past week and actually catch a few.

There was a huge school thursday night of them off Dartmouth, they were busting every where on tiny silver minnows. cast to them for twenty minutes or so then i gave up. I tried small deadly #^&#^&#^&#^&s that were the same size as the bait, but they wouldnt touch it. I've caught them on small bucktails before. went looking for them again saturday morning but they were long gone.

i've had good luck on fly teasers with them

In the North River I get into them fairly often. They do seem to have soft mouths and they do Jump. I get them on the fly rod wading and keep thinking (hoping) a big bass will take one while I'm bringing it in.

Shad darts work great, also small rubber shads. Good fight on small tackle. Best part is when you land them if you bring the onto the ground the spit the lure out in a second

the indian river up in Pembroke is a hoot at 2am.

We killed the hickory shad in Indian River Delaware with Shad darts. A few times two at a time. My son had a blastcatching over 2 dozen in a 1.5 days of fishing.

I was having a blast catching these with an untralite and tiny castmaster in West Haven, CT a few years back. Middle of the day, mid July, 90 degrees and flat calm. They were holding along a small jetty. I was wading about knee deep. I hook one and it shoots straight up but out of the corner of my eye I see a big swirl 10 ft to my left. Next thing, the shad comes flying at me, literally runs thru my legs with a ^%$^* Cow chasing it in 18" of water. The shad beached itself rather than get eaten. I quickly grabbed a heavier rod and lobbed it back out, she grabbed it, and i MISSED THE HOOKSET!!!! Dohhhhh!!!!

So, yeah, bass eat them.
