View Full Version : Kids fishing
Slipknot 05-20-2012, 08:11 PM I like to get kids out fishing whenever I can. A friend of mine has a son that is gonna be the next fish whisperer someday, he is a very active kid and has a lot of enthusiasm to learn and experience it all.
I got the chance to take him out last week and he got to see what light tackle on topwater was all about in shallow water. forgive the cell phone pic, my camera got wet.
we got about 30 fish at least total. he did well with sluggos on jigheads too.
JohnR 05-20-2012, 09:03 PM Nice :btu:
tysdad115 05-20-2012, 09:43 PM I have one too. Love watching him fish.

numbskull 05-21-2012, 04:38 PM Introducing kids to fishing is fine, but if they are meant to be fishermen they will be out there on their own trying it already no matter how bad they are at it. If it is in their blood they have no choice. I'm pretty sure it was like that for many of us.
I've got a kid like that across the street. Met him down the beach the other night coming on when I was walking off (@930pm). He was in street clothes using a boat sized spinning rod with a single plug, a small donny I had given him. Saw his father the next day. Said he had come home soaking wet. Turns out an hour and a mile of rock after I met him he hooked a 34" bass that took him around an outside rock. Alone on a dark night in early May he went in after the fish and swam around the rock to get the fish and the lure back. He can't help himself, he was born to fish.
Bazza 05-21-2012, 05:56 PM Nice job Bruce, sounds like you had some good fish, and kept him busy
Slipknot 05-21-2012, 06:44 PM Thanks guys,
he is always fishing the ponds out behind his house much like I did when I was a kid. He even got into turkey hunting recently. He has come over to learn plug building and i showed him how to tie tailhooks, he went home and made a tying vise and bobkin, then tied some fresh water stuff. He makes spinners too. I gave him a bunch of hair and stuff.
George, that sounds like quite a dedicated kid but also dangerous, I hope he knows how dangerous that was. Glad he made it back with his stuff and to shore safely

tattoobob 05-21-2012, 07:20 PM Good going Bruce, I always had fun fishing with my kids
Hookedagain 05-21-2012, 08:07 PM It is cool fishing with a young one. My son Jake has become my fishing partner this year. The guy I usually fish with doesn't fish much anymore so the boy is now my go to partner. This past Friday he FINALLY got his first striper, although it was only 26" he was still excited.
Bruce, you're a good man. Keep teaching...its very rewarding.
We're in for another kids day too.
