Well, we (myself and 3 of my nephews) had a banner day at the Canal yesterday. Not that we posted anything or said anything to anyone. The problem is, OTHER PEOPLE DID!!!
So today, the circus was in town again. Thank God the fish didn't cooperate except for a 30# one of my nephews got.
So when will the internet hero's stop? Why don't the realize that posting that a spot is on fire just draws crowds.
I counted 13 guys at the RR Bridge. There were over 30 guys where we were.
In keeping with the Larry Big Fish thread about how he misses the old days on the Back, I miss the old days when there was no internet.

A post like this is still refering to the canal and that is WAS good. Many will go because of this post just to check it out. I understand the frustration, just the modern angling world. Maybe we should add a sticky thread up about angling ethics haha. I have had many issues with people coming up to me when I'm night fishing and turning their light on me to see what I'm using, then initiating convo. Then they want to fish next to me. This is NOT how a real surfcaster should act.

Its funny, all those that write articles for OTW, post on facebook, have big circles of friends, talk to everyone - they blab about how good they do and the success theyre having where ever. People talk and others show up. Then they complain about how crowded their spots are. People just can'r resist the attention and glory!

Canals been ruined along with Cuttyhunk and all they other "in" spots to fish. You'd NEVER see anyone at Cuttyhunk, now all the allstars bring 30 guys with them to follow them around. Many other spots will continue to be ruined as guys just cant keep quiet. They'll all figure it out eventually

This is the Information Age. Yes its the internet but within minutes of someone getting a couple of fish the word goes out over the cel phones and the vulchers swoop in. In fact its a very modern technique to go with say 4 guys , spread them out along the canal , wait for a spot to get going then make the calls to bring the whole hunting party to the hot spot.

Learn to deal with it , it will never change back to the "Old Days". :)

Fishing is stupid anyways. There are much better things to use the internet for, like porn and watching youtube videos of guys get hit in the balls with stuff. If I ever decide to fish again, I'll go in the middle of the night to places where there are no fish. That way, I can avoid the crowds.

Just another heads up - I saw you posted in the boat forum about getting a 31lb bass on a bunker in narragansetts bay... the title of the thread said the fishing was hot. I told my boat buddies, they know your boat, where you launch from, they'll be hitting up your spots. Just to be safe, I told a handful of my shore buddies to post up all night at the areas you shore fish to make sure we find out if there is a night bite going on. I hope there is because me and all my north shore buddies have vacation in your area next week and we'll be out everynight. Some of my buddies have other buddies that throw tons of trash on the ground, they have no respect for anything, so sorry in advance about the litter in places. In the meantime, I'll be at the canal networking with about a dozen guys I network with down there to figure out where the bite is.

He is right the place was an effing zoo even yesterday from the fish posted up on Monday 2 hours after catching. And if you don't think people look at that and fish the next day you are crazy. I had 2 different people tell me Monday afternoon the whole low down on the canal being on fire that don't even fish the canal. They were telling me like they were actually there. They didn't hear from word of mouth or a phone call the read a blog on Facebook. I thins its foolish myself, they couldn't have waited a couple of days to get the glory?

Crowds are no fun, but anyone who can read a tide chart can tell you when the good days will be, Monday the rain helped both the fishing and the crowd control.

You honestly think that more than half of the people down there in the last 2 days can read a tide chart? I highly doubt it. Never-mind half of them still had plastic and price tags on their rods. These people did not read tide charts they read the internet.

His post was out of frustration on an already blown up spot, but the rest of the stuff I Could not have said it any better ......... Some of the articles submitted are written by the Biggest hypocrites EVER............

Quick TRUE story.... I was awakened by two guys who fished with one of the SELF proclaimed superstars talking about what was caught the night before and the biggest fish was around 15#.

Later that day the superstar told me he got a 30# that night . Can you say BUSTED..... I still laugh at this.... Pretty funny when people actually believe their own B.S.

I agree, it's the instantaneous burn of an IPhone. Last Oct. I was fishing in a spot with one other guy who was down the beach40-50 yards; I hooked a30's, he saw my rod bent and came over to see what I was doing. He called his buddies and within 20 mins there were 6-7 trucks, lights and noise. Fish moved out. I hate that.

The internet didn't make the crowds at all. Did anyone see how many people were between the sagamore and pips Monday? You couldn't get a spot to fish. Everyone here can look at a tide chart and see its going to be good. This happens EVERY year on these tides...BTW I was in the OTW Facebook picture that a lot of guys seem to be posting about. I didn't care that it was posted the canal was already beyond crowded to begin with. Also I heard about 10 guys Monday on phones saying "You gotta get down here"

so true. PIemma, you don't see the hypocrisy in your thread? Last year when the fall run started in Aug(like it always does) you were quick to point out that the fish were in the canal and only you and a few other guys knew about it( which was incorrect). And it seems like every year you get into fish in the Bay you have to come on here and announce that as well. You are as guilty as anyone, please come to grips with that. Happy your nephew got a 30 though...

Funny I was just talking to a good friend and non internet 40 year veteran of the canal yesterday about the same issue. Internet has ruined the canal as far as crowds go. You would never see that kind of crowding even 10 years ago. Crowded for sure but not like it has been for last several days. People take the whole week off. Parking lot behind rink yesterday was 5 to 1 out of state plates. I rode for a few miles after action died down and I only saw 4 or 5 faces I recognized out of a 100, and I know a lot of guys. You almost have to go to spots that you know probably won't be that good but are more enjoyable to fish. I only got my fav spot once in last 5 days. Here is an example of it. Monday I did just the opposite what most guys did and had a stellar morning. Me and maybe 4 other guys spread out for a mile or more. After bite died down I took a ride to east end to observe the zoo and ask a buddy how the bite was. He said kind of slow down here but he then reported to me exactly where I had been was real good that morning. I thought to myself how the hell did he know that less than 1 hour later when there was only 4 or 5 guys for a mile or so. I thought tomorrow will suck crowd wise and sure enough next morning was a zoo, luckily there was plenty of fish for all.
Unfortunately it is what it is and will not change so you have to accept it and make the best of it. It won't deter me from going there but I accept the fact i probably won't be able to fish the spots I prefer, although you may find some new spots to frequent. I got my best fish in canal last year after my fav spot at that tide stage was occupied and I moved down a ways to fish new area for me and was rewarded and have taken several nice fish this week at same spot so you never know sometimes you are rewarded. Make the best of it guys it is here to stay until the fishing goes south and guys move on to better hunting grounds.

You haven't seen me, because I decided in February that I wasn't going to fish the May and June day plugging tides. :D

Everyone seems to leave at dusk. You get out there around 2:30-ish in the morning, you get a couple of hours of elbow room before the circus sets up shop. Usually. Some guys now get down there early just to claim a spot. Sucks when you go to one of your jigging spots, and there's two guys there with rods stuck in the rocks, not fishing, drinking coffee, having a smoke, texting, etc. You know that they're just making "reservations" for the dawn.

Its turning into a salmon river style of fishing there! At least it isn't the middle of January and -10 degrees :smash:

Def. has turned into a changing things up on the fly fishery. All my best spots in general are crazy wetsuit spots where no one else will go, unless they plan on skishing next to the rock I'm standing on! Access is too easy at the canal, wish it was Massachusetts residents only :devil2:

BINGO, we have a winner. :nopics:

I wouldn't mind so much the circus goers showing up if they didn't start plugging on my right hip, with thier left foot placed inside my right Korkers boot. And thats just the first guy who shows up. Then they are fishing off the rack Walmart rods that don't cast for chit, and when you keep casting 200' to 250' they get pissed at you, because they either have to wait to cast or they just start casting over and onto your line. With all the room and vacant friekin rocks along the ditch you don't have to setup so close. Guy was pissed at me a few weeks ago. Keeps asking me if I was RonArra, I think because of my looks, certainly not my casting distance. He asked me three times and I gave him an answer all three times, "no", but didn't like having to wait to cast again while I retrieved. He and his friend gave me the evil stare when they walked away. e

If everybody know what they are doing you can fish fairly successfully with guys near you. Its the one guy , he casts over the 6 guys to his uptide side but he's only out 50 feet. Then , he retrieves it in in two seconds and doesn't wait for ewveryone else to complete their drift. next thing you know he's over you while you have 200 yards out and a fish on.

I'll say it again , there is no way around it anymore except to go at off times and off places. Things will never go back to "The way they used to be". :(

Got a nice yo-Zuri and about 100 yards of line a couple of years ago that way. Almost got the rod and reel out of the gunwal before the kid saw what happened and sliced the line at the reel. Guy behind me said he got the same boat and same situation earlier about 500 yards east only he got a nice Sebile from the boater. Some people never learn!!
