I'm heading to the DMV in the morning to attempt to register my homemade utility trailer. All I can gather from the RI DMV website is that I need to bring proof of insurance for the vehicle pulling it, which I have. The trailer is a small single axle utility trailer which I want to use to tow my ATV. It probably weighs around 400 pounds. We built it years ago but never had a use for it until now.

Is there anything I should know, bring or do before going there and waiting for no reason? I've read online that some states require a weight check & safety inspection before registration. However, The RI DMV website says nothing about this. Also, The DMV site says the fee is "$5.00+$1.50 per year" which sounds too cheap/good to be true. If anybody has experience with Rhode Island small home made trailer registration and can lend me some tips to make it a smooth transaction please reply or message me. Thanks.

You're right, I just returned from the DMV, transaction went relatively simple. Thanks.

For those of you with home made trailers who are considering registering, simply have your trailer dimensions, weight and carrying capacity. I was fortunate enough to be in and out of there in about 30 minutes today!
