Just like the tourists and vacationers, the sharks have returned to Cape Cod just in time for the summer. At least two white sharks were detected by sensors off the coast of Chatham earlier this month, according to state officials.

“They were detected by acoustic receivers that our biologists placed in the water,” said Reginald Zimmerman, a spokesman for the state Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs. “They detected the two white sharks off Chatham around June 8.”

The sensors, which are about a quarter-mile off land, reacted to tags that marine biologists placed on sharks in previous years, Zimmerman said. The sensors were placed between South Beach in Chatham and the tip of Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, he said.

The sharks have not been sighted yet, but the state is still collecting data to determine their current whereabouts, Zimmerman said.

Stuart F.X. Smith, Chatham’s harbormaster, did not return calls seeking comment.

Last summer, there were at least 35 great white shark sightings on the Cape. The reports forced some towns, including Chatham, to close public beaches to swimming.
