Im looking to purchase a bike rack that mounts on the trunk of a car/hatch of an suv.

Anyone has any experience, good, bad, etc with what they used.

I've looked at the Thule, Bell and a few others, all seem more or less the same besides the price.

Will be used for my canal bike on a mazda suv or my girls car for day trips.

Thanks.

I got a cheapy bike rack at the bike store I used for a couple of years .. Now my sons using it ... spent around $125.00 on it .. I'ce since got a new vehicle with a hitch and gone to a thule . ,, What ever you get putting a girls bike on a rack can be a PIA ... This bar you add to make it a boys is pretty cool and makes it easy ,, I used it a couple of years now .,. You need to be sure the rack you choose fits your car. A lot of cars withspoilers on the back can't take the strap on type racks. If you have a hitch on the Mazda that is the way to go.

the thule trunk bike racks are often on your local CL bike postings. I got a near new one for $25 two yrs ago that works great... they adjust to fit almost any car

The Mazda should have two threaded holes along each side of the frame rail. Tap the holes with the same diameter to remove any rust. However this would require a hitch mount bike rack. Those other racks that sit on the trunk run the risk of causing slight indentations, been there done that.
I have the Thule hitch for three bikes that has held up very well. When selecting hitch type bike rack beware that they can be off centered so mount on the car before purchase. The reason being that the weld points where the tube goes from 0 degrees to 90 degrees. If this weld point is off by a small degree it will show at the end of the tube.

Very happy with my Saris Bones bike rack. Definitely try Craigslist for a used one.
