JohnR 07-01-2012, 07:30 AM I'm responding (but not going :tooth: ). I wish you all massive success and wish I was going (I can't fish atm because of back pain).
vineyardblues 07-31-2012, 06:30 AM OK, I received the bad news yesterday, need rotator cuff repair,
Never have done this tuna trip before my question is this , should I still go on this trip ? , it's my left shoulder and tuff it out ...
Or fix it asap for the fall run (Vineyard Oct , RI )
Peter
iamskippy 07-31-2012, 06:37 AM Pete the one thing i can say is you may want to wait till winter for that surgery, 2 years ago i had my left arm ripped of, rotator cuff, labium, bicept, triceps and delt. I took a few pills and finished the season as it was a slow recovery for me and the physical therapy was painful. I may have had more damage i dont know, but the moral of the story is, if you want to enjoy the fall run and this trip dont get the surgery till after, you will thank yourself later.
Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device
med up for the rest of the season and get sliced in november. if you are worried about this trip you could always get a aftco shoulder style harness. it would take the pressure off your shoulder and transfer it to your torso
ThrowingTimber 07-31-2012, 09:38 AM 1. Fix it ASAP and absolutely ruin everything the surgery accomplished by doing too much too quickly ie. fall run.
Or.
2. Have it done over the winter with plenty of time to heal up/ pt it and as an added bonus you don't have to shovel snow.
*disclaimer* I'm not a doctor.
Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device
vineyardblues 07-31-2012, 10:17 AM The doctor who does fish ,told me to keep all my plans and then go under the knife in the late fall .
I may just need to find a bitch to reel in my tuna and Misc fish I plan on catching ... I need a Chum Boy like back in the day :)
Slipknot 07-31-2012, 01:37 PM Peter, if I didn't get so seasick, I'd be glad to reel in your tuna for you.
have fun guys, I'm jealous
wish i could go

Mr. Sandman 08-12-2012, 06:27 PM You should invite some girls from the GAFF magazine to go with you on a photo shoot in the canyons...and make it a real party. This way when it not your turn on the rod, you can at least be watching a pole dancer with a cold one.
ThrowingTimber 08-17-2012, 08:16 PM I'm pretty sure FID is in on some of this action I dont see his name on the roster.

Mr. Sandman 09-05-2012, 03:33 AM Leslie might produce some interesting swells out there. The storm will be a long way off still on Sunday but there might be a decent heave on.
ThrowingTimber 09-05-2012, 08:55 AM Called about the voucher. The woman I spoke with said these spots were already reserved and the voucher was more for a future trip. She said she could not ok the use of the voucher. She asked me to call back after 1pm and speak with carol the owner to see if she would ok the use of the vouchers if we had already reserved.

Charge our credit cards that they took when you made the reservation?
I looked for their cancellation policy. 42 days written notice required for a refund. But it also says 50% deposit will be charged at time of reservation. I don't think anybody's been charged, I know I haven't.
It would be good business by them to offer us something, even if it's not the full discount of the boston.com voucher.

OK Victor agreed I am the POC with HelenH on this issue. I just called again (2:20PM Wed) and Carol is not showing up today HOWEVER I should receive a call tomorrow from the Captain/owner Joe when he returns to dock tomorrow from a 3 day. I hope to get a fishing report also.

PRBuzz 09-05-2012, 02:41 PM Gear for the weekend: the crew is not going to allow everyone to bring a 150qt cooler on board. Like last year, I will fill my 150q cooler with ice to use upon return to dock. It would would be nice to have a couple more in reserve. I will try to get a small 50-60q on board. Last yr TT and I shared his 150q to keep all his catch during the trip.:)

How secure is the parking area? Your 150qt was still in the back of your truck after the trip? Do you have a locked cap?
I can bring another marine cooler filled with ice. No way to lock it up in my truck though. I've also got a wheeled 55qt that I'm planning to bring on board.

I'd say secure enough, I left in back of my truck open/unlocked. All the vehicles cram (inches bumper-to-bumper) into a very small parking lot behind the house.

Ditto on that.
It is more than a storm swell I can tell you that. The wind is 20-25 here on MV right now and gusty. 100 mi so in open water, I can tell you there is a very sloppy sea on top of a 10' swell easy. Anyone who has been there can tell you it is another world out there. The good news is they are in a 100' boat. Even still, it will be a long night for those that are not feeling well right about now.
I have no doubt the fishing will be great. Fish love this slop out there. But it will be uncomfortable to fish in it to say the least. Any first timers going? They just got a wake up call about what the canyons look like in a breeze. I hope everyone is OK.
Personally I don't see the need to push it, even on a charter. It is a hell of a lot more fun to fish out there when you don't have to hold on all day and night or even worse for those that have to fight the dry heaves.
Hope it all works out for them and they have epic fishing and safe trip. But I bet there are some willing to pay another $400 to come back right now.:yak5:
Bronko 09-08-2012, 12:51 PM Might be worth taking a drive down and talking with the crew and customers as the get off the boat as they will have first hand accounts as to what it was like down there. Then multiply it x 2.

RIROCKHOUND 09-08-2012, 05:45 PM having seen 20 out there earlier this year, it will be sloppy... SE swell, west moving eddy, SSW wind... won;t be 10ft, but even a 100ft boat will be rolling a bit....

RIROCKHOUND 09-09-2012, 07:50 PM Bummer...
so after 9 hrs of steaming we end up at hudson canyon. the nastier weather east and the bite a few days before at hudson made the capt choose there. trolled for a short time and set up for the nite chunk bite. it was pretty lumpy but doable. there were some people chumming and i got queesy after the front came through. the boat handled it nicely and we didnt get pounded too bad. there just was no bite. we jigged, baitfished, chunked, no love. 3 fish for the boat plus a bunch of blue dogs - one was a big boy. we got $75 coupons for the next time. but next time will be a last minute trip with calmer seas. last night just sucked - bad conditions with a bad bite makes for a long night. the company was great - thanks for being good sports about it boys. the lasagna was the best part of the trip
PRBuzz 09-09-2012, 08:18 PM Working on some GoPro video summary, should be short since not much to tell!
FishNH 09-09-2012, 09:02 PM Sucks being out there in bad seas.
Wish you guys would have caught.
PRBuzz 09-10-2012, 06:51 AM ..... and i got queesy after the front came through.

Mr. Sandman 09-10-2012, 11:05 AM Welcome to the canyon club. Glad you all survived OK. Having been in that situation as well a few times I had to remind myself why I go on trips like that...they are to HAVE FUN! It is not suppose to be a survival mission. I changed the way I go on these things for the last few years and I am a much happier person. The trips I choose to go on nowadays have great "weather windows" of at least 2-3 days. It is sooooo much more enjoyable to lay on the deck and look at the stars as you snooze while soaking a squid deep then to hunker down and try not to get hurt. Those rough nights out there suck and they are looong, you can't wait for the sun to rise so you can split. It can take days to recover from bad trips like this.
Bottom line is you can not plan these kind of trips far in advance. They need to be a last minute kind of thing. Be ready all the time and when all the stars align (personal schedule, weather, good reports of a solid bite), drop everything and go. Be relentless about this. WHen it is happening and the weather is prime, you go. I have conditioned my wife to understand this thinking, that I could be gone for a few days at any time if the "stars align".
My best trips have been when I get a phone call that says..."we are leaving tomorrow morning, can you go?"
(It is the same reason I don't fish fixed date tournys...if the weather sucks you just bought yourself a misarable weekend...fishing should always be a positive memory event IMO)
Next time you will get them!
Best to all
SM
ThrowingTimber 09-10-2012, 11:05 AM If it wasn't for the company I would've hung myself from my bunk. Crashed out during the monsoon late sat and was up and at it until the weather passed and nothing. The winds spinning the boat sure didn't help with our slick going this way for a bit.... Then that way for a bit... Given the proximity of the other 3 boats if they managed to zone in on one boats slick I'm sure they did well. Same here Paul. I'm going to try and get another trip in before I settle back in 12-15 hour work days.

sm - last minute trips work for you. your open availability, access to your own boat. most of us do not have those to work with. if i call 3 days before a trip to book, most trips are full on boats i want to go on. i agree on the principal but it isnt always practical. good luck charlie - let us know how you do.

That was a wicked rainbow, it did help the mental state I was in .
I told several people today that I was surprised that noone got hurt ,
And SM ,,, your name came up several times :grins:
All I can say is I am glad I went and have a ton of fun with my friends ...
Mr. Sandman 09-10-2012, 03:28 PM VB,
I know... I am a real pussy . Once you hit 50 you really don't want to deal with all that unpleasantness for long duration when you don't have to. (Ie no one is paying you) I don't care what others say about me. If I did, I would not be here. :)
I would bet you could leave your name and cell phone number with these guys and tell them if they have any last minute cancellations or open spots and the weather is decent, to call you and that you will drop everything and go and pay cash. Don't call them, go and speak with them face to face and tell them how serious you are. Leave them your contact info for them to keep on file. I bet you would get your fill of canyon trips each year.
vb makes it sound like we were speaking poorly of you and thats not the case.
PRBuzz 09-10-2012, 05:15 PM ..... Nice rainbow as we got out of Dodge though.
I almost stopped several times to take pictures of that rainbow. In actual fact many cars on Rt6 eastbound stopped on the shoulder to admire the bow. At one point when just getting on route 6 from Hyannis it was extremely intense colors and double rainbow.
The canal road also had many observing the rainbow (much diminished) from the mainland side of the canal.
PRBuzz 09-10-2012, 05:54 PM i feel unsatisfied. may try to get out there again.
Maybe it was the banana curse! Saw several mates downing them.....:smash:
JohnR 09-10-2012, 07:13 PM Ouch. Next Year
But you can say you did it :btu:
vineyardblues 09-10-2012, 08:28 PM SM, we were all talking about how nice your boat is
vineyardblues 09-10-2012, 08:32 PM Fish On
Fish On 09-10-2012, 10:28 PM I'm pretty sure I would have wimped out, if given the option, facing that kind of weather. Here is the reason I missed out this year. My only keeper of the year but the best one of my life. Little Dylan (means "from the sea") was born on Labor Day, 6 lbs 8 oz :-) I am still walking on air....
I would be interested in a last minute trip later this year if the opportunity comes up and some of you guys decide to pull the trigger again before the season ends. I had the time of my life last year with Niko, PRB, TT and the rest and will never forget it.
kippy 09-11-2012, 06:16 AM congratulations Keith!
was wondering why we didnt hear from you. congrats keith
PRBuzz 09-11-2012, 09:17 AM I heard from Buzz....... he is empty handed... says it was real lumpy
Yes empty handed but I was the only one of the group to hookup and lost on anchor rope, damn fish was supposed to go west not east! One of the few that has the strong stomach and didn't have any adverse effects of the rocking & rolling.....:yak5:

Still yellow'less! RIR you still get the chance........
Capt Charlie 09-11-2012, 03:08 PM Helen H just called to let me know the Thursday-Friday (9/13-9/14) trip was cancelled due to lack of interest. Bummer.
RIROCKHOUND 09-11-2012, 03:18 PM Still yellow'less! RIR you still get the chance........
We'll see... busy work time of year for both Capt's!
PRBuzz 09-11-2012, 05:04 PM Helen H just called to let me know the Thursday-Friday (9/13-9/14) trip was cancelled due to lack of interest. Bummer.
More likely due to lack of interest of the tuna than the tuna fisherman! There just isn't anything out there to make the trip worthwhile.
Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device
i overheard him say he had a light load for the th/fri trip and was going to have to cancel it
Fish On 09-11-2012, 09:47 PM Thanks guys!
I wonder why no interest. Maybe uncertainty about the bite in the wake of the storm? Or no posted reports for tuna trips in 2012? I guess one should wait until the positve reports start flowing in before booking a trip, but I bet all the trips sell out in a flash if that happens.
Did we just get extremely lucky last year? Having never been to the canyons before I have nothing to compare it to.
vineyardblues 09-12-2012, 10:00 AM few more pic's
PRBuzz 09-19-2012, 08:55 AM Heard a lot of chatter on the radio last weekend from boats returning from the canyons: Hydrographer to W Atlantis still DEAD! couple albacore tuna and few mahi. Boats were getting beaten up pretty bad due to the weather, so what's new?:smash:
ThrowingTimber 09-19-2012, 12:00 PM Big Jamaica out of Brielle nj has been picking at them steadily.
