dont know if everyone checks out the tuna forum so i thought i'd put up this post. we are doing a 2 day run out to the canyons. sat/sun september 8-9th. the cost is $380. in a nutshell - cruise out there for 5 or so hours, fish for 20-24 hrs and cruise home. troll 7 man rotations during the day and chunk or jig at night. last years trip rocked and we loaded up on fish. i think we have around 10 guys at this point. the boat is the Helen H, it's a nice way to fish out there - it's a 100' boat that is capable of fishing even if the weather is tough. if you want in just call them and book the trip. a couple of guys are out there now so maybe they can give us a good report. yellowfin - big eye - wahoo - mahi - swordfish - sharks...all posibilities

Sounds like an awesome trip, Just wondering what size tackle is the norm? 50's or 6/0's for trolling and smaller reels (Toriums/Avets) for the night fishing? I have done several long range trips out of San Diego so Im guessing it would be similiar.

here is a link to the current head count thread. The max is 30 people, ( 16 out of 30 spots remain), S-B currently has 8 people signed up for it meaning we own over half the real estate.

I am wondering if the people going would be interested in some t-shirts, with the Bosses permission of course.

the boat uses tld 50's to troll. mike - you've got the right idea on gear. most of the yft are in the 25-65 range, but there are 100#+ fish around. we had a big shark on a 50 for an hour and a half last year and couldnt budge it

Less than 2 weeks away. I read through last years thread and got some ideas, but can you canyon vets post a list of recommended gear for us noobs? :D

for trolling - you dont need anything, boat supplies rods and lures. for jigging tuna - flouro from 50-80#. jigs from 3-8 oz. for a setup bring whatever you think can whip a tuna. most fish are in the 30-70 pound range. i'm bringing my light cod jigging setup - a calcutta 700 on a st croix rated for 3-8 oz. and a saragossa 18000 on a tuna spinning rod. both these rods have metered braid on them, when the captain yells "they are at 120'" - you want that jig at 120'. for mahi - any medium duty setup will do (you can use it to jig up squid/bait too). 30 pound flouro and hooks in the 3/0 - 5/0 range.for chunking at night - most guys were using the boats 50's to drift bait back. there was a surprising amount of current out there, the guys chunking were stacking up 8oz egg sinkers to get thier bait down in the slick - as many as 5 sinkers. a gimbel belt comes in handy.

Yellows seem to have a preference for silver diamond jigs in size range mentioned by Niko.

Thanks, that helps. I think I'm going to bring a Saltist 40 on my cod rod and my Stella 10000SW on a tuna spinner. And maybe a small light line setup for squid. If they don't work out I'll rent one from the boat.

How about a cooler? Any need for a decent sized one or will it just be in the way?

niko

you can bring a cooler. if the deck is too cluttered we can put it up top. bring some rope to secure it

last year i got down there at 6, i think we started getting on the boat around 7. is there any place in hyannis open early for breakfast?

Matt D
08-29-2012, 05:27 AM
Perry's Deli opens at 6, every other place I've found doesn't open til' 7.

If anybody's got a long drive, I've got an open bed in the camper at Scusset Friday night. Might even fish the Ditch a bit. The dog and cat don't bite, much.

little over a week away. reports from the canyons are good. fish are spread out. good amount of mahi around. guys are getting nice size yellowfin and some big eye around. there is a nice mass of water headed towards oceanographer and hydro. bought some supplies for swordfish leaders. if anyone sees any 4# sinkers around, buy one. we also need some lightsticks

Matt D
08-31-2012, 02:19 PM
Do those 4# sinkers need to be a certain shape? I could probably pour something.

niko
08-31-2012, 03:03 PM
thanks for the offer matt. dont bother for 1 weight. next time you pour, make a couple .shape isnt too important. i've got some lead sitting around. during the winter we should have a little lead pouring party. i've lost a ton of sinkers and my supply from leadfest is getting low

I've got a couple of lightsticks. Might be pouring a few jigheads anyway so if I do I'll see if I can cob together some kind of mold for a 4#er.

I think the Helen H has made a few overnight trips already this year. Has anyone seen a report from them?

Think about bringing a milk crate with pieces of PVC pipe zip-tied in the corners. It's a great way to store your rods. You'll want to put some weight in the bottom (sinkers, jigs, etc.) to keep it from falling over. You'll want to bungee it in one of the corners of the upper deck.

They started canyon trips this weekend. They used to post reports on thier site but I think the most recent one is from our trip last year

Must have been a bunch of rookies! NO sounds great......

Initial call to the office: so far no weather concerns even with 10+' swells; I asked about roping off 12 spots together (not likely) but there are about 4-5 of us (min) that have #'s 5-10 on the reservation list and will board in order so it will be up to us to spread our elbows (how does port-side/stern sound?); and lastly the boston.com coupon, initial answer is they are not valid for us as we had previous reservations! I need to call back later when the owner is in and speak with her......

Let me know how you make out with her as i know a few people in the correct offices to possible cause some reaction, not sure about in time or not, but i still stick to telling them they can take the 12 of us off the list and can keep there discounted customers in those conditions and good luck filling the spots.

One thing to do is, when you go and pay in the office, do not pay for a rod rental. Rods are just sitting in a rack on the boat
