I know it has been hashed a thousand times and I'm not using search today. What is the best or best bang for buck mobile Boga / Lip Gripper ? My cheap old Berkley having moved on to the scrap yard in the sky

The floating plastic one. Less than $15 and light on your belt. No scale, but you know when a fish is big enough to weigh, right?

I know Bogas are expensive but i think they are the way to go. They do not break. The 30 is a handy size, the 60 is a bit bulky but im going to start carrying it more often. I did not think that last weekend i would be weighing anyhting over schoolie size, then was pised that i didnt bring the 60.

No name from Wal-Mart, 30# scale is pretty darn accurate. Three years and still works flawless, I wash it maybe twice a year. $19.95

Those bogas suck. The fish just spin on them. The plastic cheap glow in the dark/floating lipper is the way to go.

Can you hold the lip gripper handle in both the vertical and horizontal position with a fish on the lip and what is the max weight, just curious.

If you don’t need the scale the plastic lip grippers are great.

If you need an accurate scale I think the boga is the way to go… I would be nice if there was something cheaper out there that would hold up in the salt but I haven’t found anything yet that compares.

The spinning issue can be eliminated if once you have the fish on the boga you move your hand down off of the grip. I would prefer a model that didn’t spin but it’s really not hard to get around once you get used to it.

there's an aluminum one with a longer trigger. it sells for 15-20. TonyO has one. looks pretty sturdy and lightweight. CC charlies has them

Plastic glow in the dark. Floats,cheap, works well. Did I mention cheap!

I've had my Boga 60 since 2001 I believe. Never wash it, sits in the back of the truck after being swam with. Test it frequently and its still dead on. Its made of high grade steel, theres really no comparison in my opinion as far as daily use in the surf. High quality built to last made in USA. :musc:

I have one that I got at west marine 5 years ago for 30$. it has a dead-accurate 50lb scale after all this time... I love it. Cabela's had the same exact scale about 3 years ago with their name on it (theirs had a light blue grip) cant find them anymore... I'll post a pic tomorrow. I wish I could find another for the day I lose this one... Its submerged A LOT.

yes and yes. dunno the max weight, but i've hung every fish ive caught last few years on em. as long as you don't let the fish swim away with your buddies gripper in its mouth you should be alright right JAY!!!????? :hee: freakin love mine.

SWE has one for 25.99 called he evolution econolipper weight to 50 lbs. looks pretty compact might be worth a look

I have a good one. It turns out it is attached to my right wrist.....

I'm using a lipper called the original lipper. I has a 60# scale but is much smaller than a boga 60 at about half the price. They are no longer made but I know a source. The scale has been tested to 46# so far ;)

Just came back from an eve of stripers an blues. the Gripper was the best. fish can't spin once you lock it down and the biggest striper was 46 in an it had no prob holding it.the blues went fron 6 to 14 lb. Porky Francis on the Vineyard turned me onto these things yrs back as thats what he uses chartering.Haven't taken my Boca's out for yrs an have 4 of them. too damn heavy an if I'm gonna weigh a fish in well i'm gonna have a scale in a zip lock.the things are great,Light ,Float an glow in the dark. what more can you need on a rock pile at night.Ron

Before I got my boga 30 I used a field and stream version from #^&#^&#^&#^&s, 3 years in the surf, barely washed and never had an issue.

Don't think it has a scale but it's nice and about 20 bucks.

Most the guys I fish with have ditched the boga and gotten the plastic gripper thing, they all love it.

I have both ,, Boga's heavy and the advantage of having the scale I can't read anyway .. Buy the plastic .. lightweight ,, inexpensive ,, works well ..

I use the plastic lip gripper that everyone speaks of its great. I would recommend that and if you want to weight something keep a cheaper scale one handy, but you can not beat the power of the lip gripper!

No name, made in China 30$ at west marine (I actually got it for $18.99 on clearance), 50 lb scale accurate to a 1/2 pound... more durable, reliable, corrosion resistant than any van stall or any other piece of gear that I own... this thing is from another planet... I'd hold it up against a real boga any day... really strong grip. the only thing that has ever gone wrong is the plastic tip fell off... big deal. if anyone can find me one for sale somewhere, I'll buy YOU one as well as a finder's fee!!! Cabelas had them 2 years ago with a baby blue handle, but they are gone now.... As long as I dont lose it, I trust it will last forever.

I like the Rapala Lock 'n Load. IGFA Rated. 60 lb scale.

I have had mine for 6+ years. Still works perfectly. ;-).

just picked up Lipper EC50BP Fish Grip Econolipper Weighs to 50Lbs Clam Pack | Edge Angling (http://www.edgeangling.com/Lipper-EC50BP.html) because of the scale but I've been using the $20 berkley one from walmart. Big fish can open it if you don't keep down pressure on the handle... hope this one doesn't have that issue.

I didn't care for the Fish grip plastic one .. found it difficult with a active fish it seem to shift and pull away when you squeezed the handle .. but they are cost effective

the plastic lip gripper is great for fishing plugs to keep your hands out of harm's way. When fishing single hooks though, I find it easier to just grab the fish with my hand...

I have a nice one for ya john if you want it. I think it weighs up to 30lbs. Not sure of the model.

evolution gorilla gripper, weighs up to 60lbs, its accurate as far as weight, i got it at the MSBA day for $40.

its been on every trip since and now that im wetsuiting, its been submerged almost always.

time will tell how it holds up.

fine as a super lightweight lip grip - but not as a scale. My berkley lip grip much more sturdy

Exactly. Unless its really big, what's the point of weighing it? If its not for a tournament, guesstimate based on length and girth. No need to hold the fish up by its mouth if you're planning on releasing it.

Get a digital scale and a plastic lip gripper. The gripper lets you handle the fish and release it safely. A digital scale lets you weigh it and get it back in the water quickly. The two together are much cheaper than a boga and less if a strain on the fish.

I have that exact same one. Got it at Ocean State Tackle about two years ago when they had a store in Coventry, RI. I believe that location closed, but he still has a place on Branch Ave. in Providence.
