View Full Version : Getting down to crunch time maybe we need a few new rules to go by
JohnR 08-08-2012, 05:35 PM Getting down to crunch time maybe we need a few new rules to go by before we kill each other. This is getting tough keeping this open and all we are doing is arguing party lines.
Is there anyway to do this circular argument in here any kinder, gentler, like?
The funny thing is I was watching HBO's John Adams and it looks eerily familiar - 'cept they were smarter than us.
What will it take to get civil discourse in here?

That is going to be no small feat John, anytime you allow open registrations and diverse highly opinionated opinions that challange will always be there.
One thing that comes to mind is putting some regulations and warning then ban system, i have used that on other forums and it was effective. You can add a % rating or star rating to tell whos naughty or nice.
We found that once you end up banning someone the other riff raft will follow, it maybe for a lower attendence for a bit but it should rebound.
One thing i have learned over the years is that you must own your own perception, in other words, i may bust on someone whos a close friend and someone may not know and they jump in to "defend" against the ebully. But there is nothing you can do about it.

That gets my vote...
I've been on other boards that don't go in for the political arguments.....they all seem like happier places.
Raider Ronnie 08-09-2012, 06:05 AM Better a bunch if bickering & arguing over key boards rather than shooting guns at each other like many predict is going to happen in many parts of this country when Obama looses in November !

striperman36 08-09-2012, 06:44 AM Keep politics out of fishing. Ban the forum
PaulS 08-09-2012, 07:05 AM Ban the forum. Or make it a rule that only a % of posts can be here. Last 2 elections, this forum was fine (mostly). Not so sure this time.
spence 08-09-2012, 07:33 AM I've noticed things going downhill ever since I stopped posting frequently.

Fly Rod 08-09-2012, 07:39 AM Lock the particular post when there is to much rhetoric
Some of these post R beaten to death....maybe after ten or so replies the post should be closed.....:)

justplugit 08-09-2012, 09:09 AM Just give a warning to anyone who makes a personal attack on a member
of the site and then ban the person the second time they do it.
If you used naughty or nice stars I think you'd have a lot of guys would try to
get the naughty stars as a badge of honor. :hihi:
Redsoxticket 08-09-2012, 09:27 AM John, with all the extra disposable time in your life aside from work, family, personal time, s-b maintenance, fishing, yard work, doctor visits, scouts, etc. I am sure you can find the time to give warnings and banning ppl.

:rotf2:
No need to ban anyone. Let's just bring up the civility a notch or ten. We are a fishing community that *should* be able to civilly discuss things around the third rail without getting into verbal fist fights. This happens on both sides of the aisle here - left or right.
Anyone have any good images to attach when things get too tough?

RIJIMMY 08-09-2012, 12:11 PM strange that many of the responders in this thread never, ever post in this forum?
I have been an avid participant in the forum before there was a forum, dark days when I was one of the few carrying the torch in an anti-Bush wave of darkness. I can tell you that via this forum I befriended RIRockhound - lib weenie, Nebe - super lib weenie, fishbones, and others. Although I never met DadFisherman, I bet I would get along pretty well with him even though he is a semi-lib weenie. I still dont like likwid and dont think I would if I met him and spence annoys the living hell out of me but he is a good guy in person. Jim in CT gets my respect but scares me some times.
Look, who really cares if the discussion gets out of hand? There is a sticky on the forum warning you if you enter. if you dont like it, go away. I appreciate John allowing us this space to bicker, bitch and moan. I have learned things and believe I am better for it.

Jim in CT 08-09-2012, 12:50 PM Jim in CT gets my respect but scares me some times.
.
Come on, I'm not the least bit scary...especially now that I'm un-armed...
I am one of those guilty of personal rhetoric of course, although I have toned it down. I agree with RIJIMMY, you learn a lot by engaging smart people who disagree with you. I also agree with him that while I disagree with Spence on just about everything, I bet he'd be the first to help out just about anyone here, with one possible exception being yours truly, although he kindly posted a couple of cute pics of my son for me...
I think this board is a perfect microcosm of what we are facing in general. I know I'm a good guy, and I'm certain Spence is too. But we don't get along here, and likely never will.
In my opinion, I've been on teh receiving end of garbage, and I have dished out my share. I think the sticky at the entrance to this forum is sufficient, but you'll see a more respectful Jim in CT between now and November.
spence 08-09-2012, 12:59 PM I think before you respond to a thread you should be required to indicate if you'd share a fox hole with the person you're quoting.

I dont think your membership to Code Pink allows you to go in foxholes.
JohnR 08-09-2012, 01:18 PM I think WE all need to work harder at being civil because if we can't do it here where it should be easy, how do we do it IRL where it is harder and has consequence.

If Code Pink ever has an Armani faction, well...

I do read the forum but don't post much. Politics is like fishing to me, I don't know much about either one.

I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing that i got left off your list :biglaugh:...I agree w/ Jimmy on all of that- he pretty much nailed it, it's fun...most here can handle it...some claim they're leaving forever but then come crawling back, I appreciate that people have passion.....I'm not sure that Eben is a super lib weenie....but he is cute and cuddly

For the most part, it’s not a good thing when you are on a list.......
