thanks guys in advance for any insight> so I'm a few small decisions away from buying a new (to Me) boat. it's a 2002 pro sport cc 196 with an 02 suzuki 4 stroke. The motor has about 100 hours on it half of which are in fresh. the bottom hasn't been painted. so my first question is where is there a good place to get the botom painted. I've made two calls and I got $700 and a thousand for quotes. I am hoping I can get it done for less than that. The other question is around the purchase of it. I understand that I need three separate bill of sales. 1 each for the boat, motor and trailor. the other thing I am trying to confirm is that I don't have to pay sales tax on the motor, just the boat and trailor? so I would think the smart thing to do it have the motor price out at like 90% of the purchase price so I don't have to pay a bunch in tax....just trying to get my ducks in a row and get this done as cost effecient as possible. any other insight would be appreciated. thank you...

It may not be the best part of owning a boat, but it's a good idea to do anything you can yourself.
Sooner or later you'll need to pay and it won't hurt as much if you saved along the way.
Every year I scrape and paint my bottom for about a hundred bucks.
I now do plugs, filters, thermostats, gear oil, pumps
etc.. Honestly it's a pain but it saves a lot of money. More money for fuel!!!
Someday I won't be able to crawl around the bottom of my boat.

Here are my thoughts:

On the sales tax question- Go buy a commercial fishing lic.. It's about $60 I think and makes you tax exempt for everything boating... Oil, fishing gear etc. You can get this at causeway street/New Bedford at the same time you register the boat.

As far as the bottom is concerned- The quotes you have might be to have it barrier coated. This is something that you def want to have done if you plan on keeping the boat for a while. Its the right way to do it.

You do not need a separate Bill of Sale for the motor. You need one for the boat and motor and a separate one for the trailer.

Everything you need to know. Don't paint the bottom unless you're in a slip or mooring.

but if you are not keeping the boat in the water than don't paint, like sokinwet said.

If you are going to, then make sure you barrier coat. I agree you will save much money, get the saitfaction of doing it yourself, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, you know it was done right. It is such a PIA process (not difficult, just tedious) that I bet a lot of paid painters skimp/cheat/don't pay attention to detail.

There has been a ton written about the topic, and the interlux website has great info. It is basically a FULL day job, but thats it. Prep the boat in the AM, and then start painting. The thing with the epoxy barrier coat is that you have to start the next coat while the previous is still tacky. You do 4 coats like that, then throw on two coats of ablative, in alternate colors if you want a wear indicator.

Yeah, forgot to mention that. I am in RI. And although I would rather not pay to keep it somewhere, I know that I will use it more with the family if it is in the water near our home.

Craig, why are you having someone paint the bottom. I'm 65 years old and do my own every year. 20' Sea Hunt. As I recall I didn't have to pay any sales tax on the boat or motor, just the trailer.

FWIW, there is no sales tax on boat sales in RI, nor is there tax on the motor if it's already part of the boat. There is sales tax on the trailer.

IMO, it's best to have two bills of sale. One for the boat/motor and one for the trailer. It'll avoid some of the potential confusion at the DMV regarding the trailer value.

Thanks for the help guys, the boat is in the driveway and going to use it as is for the rest of the year. Will then revisit the bottom paint and slip in the spring. As much as I'd rather not paint the bottom, there's no way I'm dealing with the ramp all year.

I just bought a new to me boat in MA. One bill of sale for boat, motor, and trailer. Paid the tax at Taunton reg, got extra tax receipt for when I go register the trailer.
What I did not know - until AFTER the person gave me the registration, is that they don't reuse the boat number unless you request it. Ticked me off because I then needed to replace them all vs one letter.
