View Full Version : CAMPING SUCKS!!!

Just kidding! Went to Martha's Vineyard Campground this past weekend and even with the torrential downpours we had a great time. Rained Friday and Saturday night into the morning but the sun broke out both days in the afternoon and then all day Monday. Thank you Tynan19 for the tarp advice on the "tent advice" thread. Got the tents set up in no time but the rain started coming in as I was putting up the tarp but my old South Boston troop 210 experience must have kicked in. Took a little engineering because tree location was not exactly cooperating but we got it looking pretty good. Kids had a blast and we stayed dry, the tents were awesome. Cooked most our meals accept the last day, got the Camp Chef Weekender and it served us well, able to use a full size propane tank with 2 30.000 btu burners (actually it was kind of kick-ass). I was a little overwhelmed with how many campers were at the MV Campground, I didn't count but there had to be well over 150 campsites but the place was spotless. Bathrooms were never overcrowded but the bathroom stalls were a little on the tight side even after losing 40 pounds. The outside showers were spacious and awesome, only one temperature but was on the warm side they way I like it. Skunks would come around but only saw a couple at night. They said they won't spray unless attacked but remember this is a city kid writing this. I bought an old used Coleman Fuel lantern that lit up the site nicely, was very cool. The advice to get the two tents was spot on, it was great listening to the kids laughing at night, they said that was their favorite thing about camping. It has been a few years since being to the Vineyard and I forgot how beautiful it is.

Wasque update - the entire stairs and boardwalk have washed away since last August and we had to swim at the beach at Dikes bridge because of the dangerous riptides at Wasque.

No luck fishing but I made my donation to the local bait shops. Would realy like to make it back there for the tournament, but we will have to see what the fall brings.

Once again I want to thank everyone on the great camping advice, it saved my vacation. :uhuh:

At least I know better..... Her idea of camping is no blow dryer in the hotel room. Hasn't stepped foot on the boat in a couple years either.

I am married to a freikin saint, she'd have to be to put up with me. First time we ever went away together (22 years ago) was to Maho Bay Camp Ground on Saint John. Absolutlely one of the nicest islands, 3/4 of it is a national forest but you better bring some hardcore deet (the mosquitos ate her alive). The tent platforms are up in trees along a wooden walkway slightly above the ground. Great place for island hopping (St. Thomas, Tortola, Joost van dyke) and an Eco minded place with an early quiet time so you can hear the jungle at night. Prices have gone up though but very cool place, I would like to get back there with the kids someday. BTW there is a Westin resort down the road. :)

I passed the camping torch to my son & soon-to-be daughter in law, along with all the gear! They even go to the same campsites we went to 25yrs ago. If anyone interested: Cathedral Pines in Eustice ME. Located on a 20mi long lake, Flagstaff, which feeds the Dead River.

my most memorable camping experience was when we got back to camp
with a rented movie...we had a full roof tarp set up complete with color tv and a VCR....we were the only ones there....out of forty campsites. well we had a few beers and decided to watch the movie so i pop it in ...and it was a customers video that he got mixed up with the store owned one... and it was a comedy stand up comic on tv that the guy was recording that was so freakin funny
the guy is stuffing footballs under his sweater like big boobs and talkin trash
talk bout fooball ....i thought i was really gonna die from laughter.

Not to start crap...but why does it need to be Alcohol free. I understand family friendly, which means behaving like responsible adults...but I don't see why you can't enjoy a couple of beers with your meal or sitting by the campfire at night.

People would just need to behave like adults and not 19 year old college kids....

I think I'll stick to camping at the Marriott. At least I can bring my booze, and if I forget it's a short trip down to the lobby bar.

Salisbury Beach State Reservation

Either would require some "red Solo cups" as alcoholic beverages are not allowed.
