Can't get any sound out of my laptop, don't know how to fix it. I am computer-stupid in many ways, this is one of them. :smash:

Does it have volume/mute buttons on the keyboard? I've noticed on some machines they can conflict with the software volume/mute.

Spence - I checked and it is not muted as I get sound form computer functions like closing a word doc without saving, but I don't get any sound from things like You Tube vids, Slacker radio, etc.

Zeal - IBM X60

I bought the computer used and had to install a bunch of drivers as it was all cleared out by last owner. Is there some sort of sound driver I might need? Tried doing some searches online and came up more confused than when I began.

Did you open the audio control and check to see if any channels are muted?

Start > Control Panel > Device Manager> Sound, Video, Game Controllers.
Check to see if there is a Yellow Triangle next to one of your sound devices (it should be labeled as RealTek or some other goofy name).

If you do see it, double click on the device that does and a pop-up will appear.

On that pop-up you will see a tab named Driver. On the driver screen there will be a button for Updating the driver. Click on it and let the computer try to find a new driver for the device.

If there is no yellow triangle, try it anyway. If the previous owner wiped that thing down, you might need to go to the website and get the audio drivers from the company's website and manually install it.

Spence - Chekced, nothing is muted.

Zeal - Ran the update and it says the one I have is current. Might end up giving the computer to the wife to have her IT guy see what he can do for me.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the audio driver, if that doesn't work, then the previous owner may have unknowingly messed up something.

Let us know if the IT guy looks at it and what he says!

did ya plug some in to see if you have sound in them?

sometimes you have to uninstall hardware like your sound card

so it can get rediscovered on boot up

so go into control panel>system>device manager> find your sound device and uninstall it...

reboot>

see if .............it'll find it and reload the driver
then it may work again

Tried some headphones last night just in case; no go. I'll try to uninstall it tonight. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions so far!

The "Speaker Setup" has a pull down tap where you can select laptop stereo speakers, laptop mono speakers, monitor stero speakers, surround sound speakersan etc Look in this section to see if your laptop has the "laptop speakers" selected.
To find this go to the sound and multimedis propertied, audio, sound playback and click on the advanced tab to see the list of the speaker configurations as I mentioned above

Toby - it sounds like sound works but is not playing certain apps that use flash - if it is still not working go to Adobe and download the latest Flshplayer and retry
