View Full Version : What's wrong with my butt caps?

So I was replacing the line on my reels...no, seriously :devil2:

I left the rods standing up against the side of the house and when I went to get them out of the rain 2 of the 3 butt caps were rubbing off black like shoe polish really badly...

The only thing I can think of is if maybe some solvent got dumped on the grass sometime this summer? Don't think so but I don't know what would else could do that.

My expectation is lots of humor at my expense and little real information, except for saltheart who may have an idea :fishin:

Any solvent strong enough to degrade butt plugs would surely kill the grass, is it dead?

The area I had them was 1/2 dirt so it's hard to tell. Thanks for reminding me, I need to re-landscape it.

Hmmm, I did have them standing in some mulch for several days, although I didn't notice any problem after that. I was just today pulling them out of the rain.

If they're still losing rubber when dry it has to be a chemical reaction of some sort.

No beer was spilt on my lawn, never, and I don't drink when I fish.

that's it. It's been so long since they've been used that the mojo is coming off

That doesn't explain why it happened on 2 out of 3. And why do you think these rods ever had any mojo in the first place :rotf2:

Because you bought them from someone who actually fished?

Spence,
All depends on your butt. Did you stick the rod into your butt, or did you stick your butt onto the rod. I've never done it myself as I'm not into that, just a thought :)

Almost all the fuji style butt caps will do this if left in the sun for a long period of time. The ones that don't are the ones you will find in the hardware store as crutch tips or a marine store that go on the deck chairs. Years back when i ist started building rods we used the Daisy crutch caps. they came in a bunch of sizes an didn't degrade like the newer ones do from the sun an such. Some of my rods I change them twice a year. You keep your rods outside or in your rod racks a lot an you will see this.LOL I just put new ones on the 2 centurys I've been usin a load this season. they about live on my truck.Ron

As they get old they do degrade and heat will also cause "butt leakage". :)

Anything with a solvent , even hand cream can take some of the uncombined monomer out of the rubber especially on the surface and with this comes the carbon black that is used as a filler and to color it.

I bet if you put them in a dry place for a week to be sure they are dry then put them in a car on a sunny day , you would see some black rub off when they get warm.

Just surprised as it was so bad, never seen it before. If they're still effed up I'll just put new ones on, it's cheap enough.
