Hey, no offense to the weatherman on Fox, but if you need to explain every possible variable for where this storm MAY go, and it entails a catestrophic shift of the jet stream over the next 3 days, maybe you're reaching a little to far!

The forecast model for the predicted path of this storm only contains 2.....YES, ONLY 2 possible cases where the storm would be drawn in towards the coast and hit us squarely on the south coast.
The problem is that these 2 possiblities require the jet stream to drop down from Canada to Florida within the next 3 days.
Forgive, but if that were to happen, the hurricane would be our LAST concern!!!!!

(Sounds like someone is trying to glorify their position for contract renewal time!)

While the above is said in jest, I do agree that it's rather silly how they make mountains out of molehills. But, I guess they have to talk about something.

Say what you will, however, the models show more than 2 options. I've looked at and discussed with the metro guys I work with showing all models shifting to a more westerly track for Sandy.

3:00 US Model hanging a left.

There is a consensus forming in weather forecast models that hurricane Sandy is unlikely to go out to sea. Instead, it more likely will merge with a strong fall cold front and transition into a powerhouse, possibly historic mid-latitude storm along the mid-Atlantic and/or Northeast coast Sunday through Wednesday.

The majority of models now take Sandy from its current position over Jamaica northward over the Bahamas before curving the storm towards either the mid-Atlantic or Northeast coast. Models disagree on where the storm will recurve and make landfall: simulations vary from the mid-Atlantic to Maine. There remains a chance, though diminishing, the storm will slide harmlessly out to sea.

The location of the storm’s landfall is very important for determining exactly what local impacts will be. Not everyone will experience significant or dangerous storm conditions. But suffice to say, coastal regions from the Carolinas through eastern Canada are likely to get battered by tremendous surf and face a real risk of significant to severe coastal flooding. This storm will be a slow mover meaning large waves may pound the coast for lengthy time periods. Not to mention, the wind and waves will raise the water level, bringing ashore a multiple foot storm surge in regions close to where the storm makes landfall (assuming it does so).

Making matters worse, the storm will coincide with a full moon Monday night, meaning elevated tides above normal levels. Astronomically high tides have played a key role in historic coastal flooding events along the East Coast, such as the Ash Wednesday storm of March, 1962.

Unless it takes a severe turn to the right (which some models have it doing) we are at the very least going to get some rough seas and some high winds. Most models have it coming towards us now, but they also have it being downgraded to below hurricane force by then.

Word for the wise, from Matt Noyes: "Mariners should not plan any fishing trips early next week, and should be back safely in port by Saturday Evening. Wind and waves will gradually build Saturday night, but will probably exceed nine feet by Sunday midday on New England's offshore waters, and will peak at over 30' - higher if a worst-case scenario verifies."

They don't have a solid feel at all.

The latest set of 00Z (8 pm EDT) and 06Z (2 am EDT) computer model runs are in substantial agreement for the next 3 days, but Sandy's future is as clear as mud after that. Sandy will continue to punish the Bahamas today and Friday, as it tracks north to north-northwest. Sandy will probably come close enough to the Southeast U.S. on Saturday afternoon to spread heavy rains to the coasts of South Carolina and North Carolina. However, the 4 - 6 day computer model forecasts for Sunday - Tuesday diverge widely. The GFS model, which has been one of our two top models for predicting hurricane tracks the past two years, has been very inconsistent with its handling of Sandy. Runs of the GFS model done 6 hours apart, at 8 pm last night and 2 am EDT this morning, were 300 miles apart in their position for Sandy on Tuesday, with the latest run predicting a landfall in Maine on Wednesday morning. On the other hand, the ECMWF model, our other top model for predicting hurricane tracks, has been very consistent in its handling of Sandy. The ECMWF model has Sandy hitting Delaware on Monday afternoon, the same forecast it has had for three consecutive runs. The other models tend to follow one extreme or the other, and NHC is picking a solution somewhere in the middle of these two extremes. An extra set of balloon-borne radiosondes is going to be launched at 2 pm EDT Thursday all across the U.S., which should help this evening's model runs. Extra radiosondes will be launched every 6 hours through Saturday afternoon.

that range Paul is only 200 mi. the question is how fast to the west will Sandy be pulled by the negative tilting trough as the trough intensifies.
Sandy is NOT going far east the NAO block is holding it in to be consumed by the trough at some point.

We'll likely not be in the heavy rain side of this storm - is that right Bill?

From what I've read it depends...but we're still going to get a lot of rain. It's a big storm that's going to spread and then camp out over us for a while.

Good thing is we're still down a bit on water levels so the system has more capacity.

I was up in VT just after the storm last year...they got pounded.

Yes we did
I was fishing in NH that wknd and left early sunday am to come home. No problems on the way and I think I was home between 9 and 10am, straight to the couch for a nap. Kids woke me up a couple of hours later saying BHOP (Brandon House of Pizza) is in the middle of the street. No issues at my house as I live about 60 feet above a swamp in the Champlain Valley but I know many people who were stranded for a week and the effects are still ongoing in some towns. I don't want to see that again, and the biggest problem is many of the wiped out roads are in the rivers path at the bottom of valleys.

I am at 710 feet. Blowing really good in the last 10 minutes.

That's high altitude RI; Mt. Jerimoth, the highest point in the state, is 812 feet. I'm in Narragansett and the water's over the sea wall; the Avenues and Cronin's are barricaded; blustery at the PJ Light. Hate seeing this valuable fishing time washed out.

We actually have a bit of a micro climate. It will be raining 4 miles from me in Harrisville and snowing like all get out at my house.

Rain is insignificant right now at my house. Sustained winds are also pretty low but we are getting some good gusts. Forecast says next 8 hours or so will be our worst.

Everyone seems concerned about tonights high tide in the Bay. Nothing people can do about the flood waters but get out of the way. I hope its minimal.

Still no power here. Lost it yesterday around 6. High winds and a lot of trees down, but minimal flooding- amazingly, my basement is dry (and its a notorious leaker).

I've been out of the loop, but it seems like jersey took the brunt. Good luck to everyone down there, and also to those in ny, RI, and the ss of ma.

I am unable to connect with any in Ocean City NJ. THe GSP is still closed past marker 152. Both causeways to OC are closed and a mandatory evacuation of Ocean City is still in place.
I hope to be able to go down this coming weekend, Friday and see how much damage our place has, at worst I think it's flooding. but won't know till then.

Nice! It's kinda cool camping. The kid thinks its fun but it sucks not having a hot shower in the am. That's what wakes me up. I was moping around for 3 hours this am not knowing what to do with myself.

Another downside is that every loan that I'm working on needs a re-inspection. Only a drive by but it puts a wrench in EVERY friggin deal. The lenders want to make sure the house is standing before they lend. But how the hell will they know if the home doesn't have 5 feet of water in it? Makes no sense.

The magnitude of this storm is nuts. My company is headquartered in the western suburb’s of Cleveland, OH. They lost power last night at 8:30 PM. They are still out and do not even expect it back tomorrow.

My buddy out in in Chicago, IL said Lake Michigan had 23’ waves. Amazing power and immense impact ……………

Man, that's quite the pain. We just signed our P&S today for our first house. Been enough of a headache with so many people involved, then mother nature comes in to screw it all up even more. Fortunately, it seems the house was untouched which is good because I go out of town for work the day after closing and any delays would push us back almost a month (along with the 3 other dependent deals).

Good luck digging out of all headaches.
