View Full Version : Braided Line
macojoe 06-01-2003, 08:14 PM What are you guy's using to cut your braided line?? I have tryed clipers, small scissors, but they don't cut well. Last year I carryed a small box cutter with a razor blade.
Are there any better Ideas??
Thanks
Mike P 06-01-2003, 08:19 PM Leatherman Micro. Best thing I ever used on braid, sharp scissors and it folds down to the size of a nail clipper.
macojoe 06-01-2003, 08:21 PM Thanks mike!! Were do you get them?? will MikeCC have them??
Mike P 06-01-2003, 08:45 PM I got mine at Target. Sports Authority has them too.
I never saw them at Mike's but I don't get in there much these days. He has mucho new stuff every time I head up your way.
I've used regular nail clippers, but you sort of have to pull on the line to cut it while you're pressing on the clippers. More like biting or sawing the line instead of cutting it, and they dull quick. A good pair of scissors (Fiskars, Cutco, etc) are just too big to carry and the points can go thru the fabric of a plug bag. This Leatherman thing cuts fine braid clean as a whistle and when folded you can put them in your wader or jacket pocket without risking getting jabbed.
This is the real small Leatherman tool, not the big multi-tool. Costs about $20.
Notaro 06-01-2003, 09:18 PM I had the same problem yesterday, MacoJoe. You can use a plier and cut it and yank the line down.
Anyway, I got a question for the spiderwire. When I cast it yesterday and it stops at like 50 feet. It doesn't go smoothly as I expected. What I mean is that it doesn't spool many linefrom my spinning reel. I used braided line on my south bend mr. big fish combo set. And I have noticed that if it gets wet, the line doesn't spool fully to my expectation. I bought a spiderwire braided line stealth and it only has 150 yard. I need more than that. Or maybe I'm wrong about that?
BigBo 06-01-2003, 09:48 PM MJ, I have to go with Mike P's suggestion. It's what I carry and use plus it's so small and compact, you just shove it in your pocket and you don't even know it's there.
Notaro, I really don't know what a mr. big fish combo set is, or how much line it's rated for, but, you've got to remember that super braids such as Spiderwire Stealth are much smaller in diameter than Mono. That being said, I'm sure your reel could handle much more than 150 yrds of whatever test strength you're using. A spinning reel that is not filled properly cannot obtain the maximum potential distance because of the nature of how the line pays off the spool. There will be resistance against the top lip of your spool and the resistance is greater as the amount of line on the spool is diminished. You need to spool it completely to within at least 1/8" of the outer diameter of the lip. You should be using a Mono backing on the spool for filler, then tie your braid to the Mono to complete the spool filling process. You really only need 25 yrds or so of Mono backing. This will also prevent the braid from slippage and or cutting into your spool. Then buy your Stealth in the 300yrd package and fill it up.
I personnaly don't like braid on my spinning reels and I just use it on all my conventionals. I stay with Trilene Big Game Mono on the spinning equipment and get excellent distance with it. I know lots of people do use the braid on spinning gear so that's just my opinion. Take a look at your spooling techniques and hopefully this will help. ;)
Swiss Army knife - Victronox- with sissors
Ocean State Job Lot
Fishaddict 06-01-2003, 10:08 PM A very sharp pocket knife has worked great for me.
And that little blade on the real Swiss Army knives
will sharpen up like a razor.
Notaro 06-01-2003, 10:21 PM alright, i'll think about it. next week i'm going fishing on the cape with lures for stripers and blues. triline big game is excellent for my lures. alright, thanks, bo.
Bob Senior 06-01-2003, 10:35 PM For cutting line (I use PowerPro), I've tried all kinds of gizmos from nail clippers, Leatherman tools, Chinese copies of Leatherman tools, to scissors, pliers, jackknives. I settled on the Kershaw Double Cross jackknife, and I love it. About all I can't do with it is take it on an airplane! Here's their ad:
The Double Cross: New, with the "Double Duty", these double-bladed knives feature one-handed opening and traditional look. Try one. Try two. These knives feel good to carry.
They're on www.kershawknives.com.
I got mine about five years ago at Narragansett Video shop in Wakefield. It's best features are that it'll sharpen like a razor and, handiest of all, it's openable and closeable with only one hand, has two blades, is small and light, and it locks open. For fishing, jackknives are a problem when you have to use two hands to open and close them. This one works great with just one hand (with a little practice.)
I don't get a commission on these things, I just like mine and carry it everywhere.

Spider wire doesn't seem to work with a spinning reel. Tried it 3 weeks ago. Can't cast it to any distance.
I'm staying with mono and flourocarbon.
macojoe 06-02-2003, 08:08 AM Thanks all!! I will look into some of these. Like I said I use a box cutter but they rust after one trip! I like the sharp pocket knife deal. kershaw knives are nice I have a ouple of there fillit knives. but that pocket knife is way up there in $$$.
Notaro I do not use braid for spinning eaither. I have heard some people have luck with it but I am not one of them.
Good Luck
Fishpart 06-02-2003, 08:16 AM May want to try the little Fiskars kids scissors, they are a couple of bucks and cut Spectron pretty well. Nice rounded ends that won't drill holes in all your bags or waders. I use them when I'm at the house, but would be drawn and quartered if for some reason each kid didn't have a pair.
Notaro 06-02-2003, 02:33 PM Why do some people have bad luck with braid line on their spinning reel? What makes it bad on some people's spinning gear? Maybe, if they sell in 350 yards and it might make a difference?
I go with the kiddy scissors myself
Fly Rod 06-02-2003, 04:12 PM Like I said earlier tried the spider wider and did buy the 300-350 spool with no good results. If some of you are having no problem casting then I think that the differance is the depth of the spool. I fish with pen spinning reels and they are shot necked. That's only my opinon.
Fly,
Sorry to hear it. I have had great results with most braids.
What I have learned;
- If spinning use one that has an oversized roller & b sure it works
- The new small lipped reels seem to cast farther
- The adjustable spool fill ability of a Stradic helps ALOT. It puts the line on the spool so that there is more on the back than the front, cone like.
What I currently use as a spinner;
Shimano Stradic - this years model.
PWRPRO 50 on one 30 on the other
Rods - Batson 967 Allstar 597 I have beaten these two pretty good and am impressed with both. The 967 excellent all around plugs to 3oz the 597 excellent for Ledgerunners and such
I had breakage with the stealth so I stripped it. So far so good with pwrpro
Goodluck
Chris
BigBo 06-02-2003, 09:21 PM Notaro, they do sell in 300 yard spools. You just won't find it at your local Wal-Mart. Go to a decent tackle shop that stocks the stuff and I'm sure they'll have the bigger spools.
Notaro 06-02-2003, 10:55 PM like fore river b&t? i really liked those spiderwire braid stealth because using a 30 lbs in 8 lbs diameter was excellent for me fishing for blues. i primarily prefer using my braided line for lure fishing for more sensitivity.
