View Full Version : Winter Schoolie Fishing ? Weeknd Plans?
JohnR 02-09-2001, 10:16 AM OK, definitely getting cabin fever here so I have decided that at least, I will seriously work on my gear this weekend and at best, go out and do something about it. There are a couple places where I'm told there is some winter-over fish and I was reading The Fisherman which in the reports section mentioned some schoolies being taken in Charlestown Pond. So last night I quickie cleaned a couple 5500C3s for an excursion this weekend. I'm in the final steps of reassembly when the weather guy is on saying how things will start warming up this afternoon and I start to grin. Then he demonstrates how the wind will be picking up today, tonight, and into tomorrow, not good. It is supposed to blow up to 40mph tomorrow with potential gusts to 60!!
GS, something for you to keep in mind...
So I'm might be cleaning gear more than anything else, and installing that TP holder...
What are your weekend plans, any fishing?
Saltheart 02-09-2001, 10:57 AM Where is Charlestown Pond? Ninigret?
JohnR 02-09-2001, 11:12 AM Yep, the one that feeds the breachway. Brain fart on my part, that's just the way I associate it in my miniscule mind :o , but yes, Ninigret Pond...
Saltheart 02-09-2001, 11:31 AM Right now it looks like She has to work a double shift on Wed so it looks like we will be doing the Valentines Weekend this weekend instead. Which isn't bad mind you!! :)
Got Stripers 02-09-2001, 11:36 AM Hey I'm going tomorrow man, 55 degrees and windy. Those are two things I like to hear in the early spring. Warm air temps and high winds to mix things up and warm the water quickly.
My usual fishing partner has been up to his ears in honeydo's all winter and he's trying to pull free for tomorrow and I've got a guy from NY meeting me there. Both are not real convincing that they are going to come through, so if anyone wants to join me last minute let me know. I probably can't say if a spot has opened up until early this evening, but I will post it if anyones interested.
I'm looking forward to some warmer weather, even if it will be on the windy side. Tight lines.
Fishpart 02-09-2001, 12:06 PM Saltheart, Stop by on your way through. I plan on being around all weekend. I do realize though that what is at the end of your ride is more inviting than visiting a fisherman.
Saltheart 02-09-2001, 02:17 PM It all depends on the timing Fishpart. As of right now I don't know if I'm heading out early or late Sat , etc. However , one of these days I'll swoop down on you on the way by.
Slipknot 02-09-2001, 03:18 PM Actually I am getting ready soon to hit the Canal for a try at the Cod. and Sat. I have to work .
Don M 02-09-2001, 03:50 PM John R:
Partner tells me that the back side of Quonnie, the part that is accessible from the yacht club in Weekapaug has been ok. A few fish here and there. The cemetry along the Pawcatuck might be worth a try.

Slipknot 02-09-2001, 06:34 PM Well I'm back already. I am fairly convinced that the reports of keeper cod at the East end are a ploy to get fisherman to buy bait. After giving it a shot again this week low tide and last week high tide ,that is my opinion. The wind was wicked down there this afternoon, the only signs of life were ducks and seagulls. I only tried jigging as I refused to buy any clams from the rumor spreaders. Maybe next month???
JohnR 02-09-2001, 10:14 PM Thanks Don, couldn't have been worse than where I went today... Not lousy conditions or anything just no fish or hits. 'Course I was unable to use the ultradeadly Kalins Grub tails (may have been a different brand but that clear and pepper pattern style) from last year efectively. As it turns out, after every other cast and sometimes on the first cast with a new grub on, after the retrieve I realized that the tail had been severed from the body. Now there was a little hesitation on the retrieve but that was as it passed through a particular rip, not like a hit from a fish. After 4 severed tails, I dug through my bag and the three I had left came apart with the slightest pressure. So switch to the old Queen and nothing happened then either... Maybe next tomorrow, next week, or points southwest :P
