View Full Version : WTB 8 wt combo
Trying to get into the salt water fly scene. Would like to get something that will last me beyond the beginner portion of the learning curve (even if I have to struggle with it during the beginner period)
Almost pulled the trigger at Rivers End during their 20% sale, but didn't and now I'm back in the market...
iamskippy 11-26-2012, 03:02 PM I know you asked about an 8, but i figured i would offer up the 7 that i have, i picked it up last winter for someone that never paid me.

Its in perfect shape i didnt see anything wrong with it, and i never used it, retail is $94 i would like to get $50.
Saltheart 11-26-2012, 03:02 PM I have a 10 wt combo. A Penn 10 wt with a Tioga reel. There is fly line on there (shooting tip plus a lot of spectra backing) Not sure of reel condition as it has been hanging on the wall about 6 years. Assuming the reel is fine , i would want $200 for the combo. meet me somewhere near the RI border.
IMO 10 wt is pretty good for striper fishing.

I will keep this in mind but right now I am leaning towards a 4 piece

I am trying to keep the weight around 8 for now. I have a 5 or 6 (don't remember which one) that I am going to experiment with for atlantic salmon this weekend and decide whether I feel like I need an 8 weight for those fish. If the existing outfit handles those fish (they fight like crap) I might be interested in this outfit.
Any specifics on the rod? Length, # of sections, etc.
Albie1guy 11-26-2012, 04:27 PM I have an Orvis Silver Label TL 9ft 8wt 4piece in as new condition.

afterhours 11-30-2012, 07:40 AM reel was 400, x-spool was 160, line was 60, over 600- give me 300 plus 150 for rod.
chefchris401 11-30-2012, 10:47 AM if you guys work a deal let me know, i can grab the rod/reel from don and meet up with you early next week man in soco for one last outting.
afterhours 11-30-2012, 11:18 AM either way i'd like to meet up next tues? at soco...good temp and wind direction.
Don't have that much liquidity in the bank account for the combo, but the rod still seems too good to pass up. I am going to think about it for the day. I assume there is no rush Don?
I can;t make it out next Tuesday (brother flies in from CO for my mother's Bday) but I am planning on making it there for Monday. Nothing as it relates to fishing timetables is set in stone for me these days, so I might not even make it down there on Monday... will keep in touch.
parker23 11-30-2012, 02:17 PM I recommend 10 wt setup. Casting large streamers or clouser minnows in the wind requires a rod w/more backbone than an 8 wt.
I have a bunch of rods and reels w/line. Contact me if you want to check out a couple of my old setups.
I will be fishing for the few next weeks, after that I will be free on the weekends
Bruce
afterhours 11-30-2012, 04:24 PM i also have a 10 wt for sale, brand new powell tiburon, 9', 10 wt, 4 pc. 150.
