View Full Version : ZeeBaas Question
the point 12-11-2012, 11:26 AM IF you had the same setup up for each reel, Would there be a difference in casting distance between the zx2-22 or the zx2-25?
On a legend series 1-4 oz 10' 6" Braided line
Sgt Striper 12-11-2012, 11:42 AM Should get a little more distance on the larger spool, might as well get the 27, only weighs a little bit more.
Linesider82 12-11-2012, 11:47 AM I would think so. The reel body is the same, but the difference is the rotor and spool size. the 22 can take either 2.00 or 2.25" spools and the 25 is based on 2.50" or 2.75" (diameter?), so to change models I believe just the rotor and spools need to be swapped. Maybe someone else has done this? I think the design of the Stella's spool being longer affects distance more than diameter based on what guys that fish the canal have said on here. I am not a competition caster by any means, but I can cast further with my sustain than my z22, using same setup. Interesting question!
fishbones 12-11-2012, 12:09 PM He's looking at the 22 and the 25. The 20 and the 22 have the same body, and the 25 and the 27 have the same body. I use a ZX2-25 on a Mojo 10'6 and it matches up really nicely. Very light setup that casts well. I'd suggest the 25 for the a rod that size.
JohnR 12-11-2012, 12:18 PM Since the difference in weight is negligible from the 25 to the 27 - get the 27, you can always have too much line, you can't always have enough
the point 12-11-2012, 12:20 PM Ty, For all the reponses. This will be a set up for a friend of mine, maybe he'll sign onto the site one day. But looks like he will be get the ZX2-25

I wonder what his resoning why to not get the 27?? He is also getting it bailed.
numbskull 12-11-2012, 12:31 PM I suspect the 22 will cast better on a legend but am not sure.
The legend uses a Lowrider LC guide that is placed in fairly close for this guide style. Doing that causes problems unless you optimize it for a given reel (which obviously ST. Croix can't do). It is my experience that smaller spools cast better thru lowriders when the guides are mounted closer than ideal. There is of course also some distance loss as the line gets further towards the arbor faster on a small spool reel than on a large spool reel so this may counteract the spool/guide benefits.
That said, I would go with the ZB 25 I think it will perform well enough and hold its value better (I use a 25 on a GSB1321M built with lowriders and it works fine). I don't like the 27 spool because I think it creates issues with small collector guides and also increases the chance of line snagging on a roller during a cast. If you have a rod built with big collectors (like a 30 or 40mm guide) it doesn't matter, but then you are fishing a rod that is tip heavier than it needs to be.
The original ZB22 was a more compact reel than the 25/27 (it used the same gear case but the rest was different), but the newer version uses the same handle and stem length as the 25/27 and thereby loses any advantage over a 25.

What the heck does that mean?
By the way, youre a stinky reader too. The original question was between the 22 and 25. There was no mention of the 27. Maybe your brain isn't at 100% because of the nicotine withdrawals.:devil2:

I've know the Boss 10 years and never realized he smoked. I have fished with him and never seen a cigarette.
RIJIMMY 12-11-2012, 01:20 PM looks like fishbones is having crappy coffee withdrawals?

He doesn't really smoke. He just likes being around smokers for the second hand smoke.

Hahaha, it's not the coffee.
chefchris401 12-11-2012, 02:08 PM they all use the same body, all of them, bailed, not bailed size 20 to 27
the difference is the rotor size and spool size.
the 20/22 share the same rotor and use different spools
the 25/27 share the same rotor and use different spools.
the weigh difference is a couple oz from the 20 to 27 due to the bodies being the same, which sucks has the 20 is about the size of a vs150 but weighs 5 oz more.
The 27 rocks, and just get a spare 25 or 27 spool if he wants to switch to lighter braid.

Thanks for clearing that up, Chris. I always say they have different bodies when I mean diferent rotor assemblies.
rickhern 12-11-2012, 04:45 PM I purchased a 27 spare spool for my 25 but when the performance was so much better, I sold the 25 spool. The 27 casts noticeably further and as mentioned earlier, having extra line is never a bad thing. The 27 spool also creates a slightly faster line retrieval. I use it on a setup with low riders(gsb1321M) and it casts almost as well as my emblem. Never once had a problem with line getting under the roller during a cast(had it happen many times with a 706 or converted 704 though:smash:).
I know it wasn't the question, but I would definitely go 27 on that setup.
Redsoxticket 12-11-2012, 05:12 PM The handle the same type and size for the 22, 25 and 27 out of the box.

Hardcore 12-11-2012, 08:56 PM I like a 22 on a 9'-10'6" rod. It's light and it holds 300 yds of 30# braid. If you are using heavier line and need more line capacity go with the 25. You can customize the reel how ever you like. You can choose the handle and the knob you'd like.
