Time to get resupplied with wood blank stock. Where are you guys finding your birch, maple, and especially AYC? Getting low on everything, so been turning some sugar pine. I have the guys at the transfer station looking out for tables and chairs for me, as some of the old maple furniture is nice. And the price is right.
I know we don't "need" to use AYC as the holy grail of materials, but it sure turns nicely, and I would like to get a decent supply of it.
I am on the northshore of Boston

Liberty Cedar in R.I. AYC
Neddle Birch from a former site sponsor!!!!
I will be bringing to Plugfest Maple baseball bat barrels. Not a large amount but suffice to make a few "TINGS".

Don't overlook that pine, no matter how nicely AYC turns.

Gibbs, Pichney, Musso, Beachmaster- All used/use pine extensively. None used/use AYC. While most of these makers probably didn't have AYC available to them, one does, but it is not used in any of their highly touted lures.

And if pine is easier to get and less costly, well then it's a no brainer to me! :-)

I've found that most of the smaller wood yards an saw mills will work with you pretty good. to save go in with a couple others and get 100 brd ft apeice an save money. Plus look for the cut off an trim end sales this time of yr. Get some very sweet deals.

I much prefer pine, AYC is terribly inconsistent in weight which can make for nightmares... I still use it for some plugs, but for (most) swimmers, spooks, pencils and poppers... pine (and especially sugar pine) is FAR superior.

BIL did a job in northern California and brought back eight 3' balusters for me. He had them cut to 12" to bring in his luggage, so a lot of waste....
Also using 1 5/8 clear baluster stock from local yard.

looks like both Downs & Reader (Stoughton) and Righteous Woods (Rowley) also carry sugar pine according to WoodFinder and their websites

WoodFinder is a great resource .. esp for furniture builders looking for specific woods

I too have become a big fan of pine over the last several years. The price is great too. Downes & Reader has nice stock. Get the furniture grade not the clear as it is almost as good and cheaper. Knots are only difference and far and few between. Still like AYC too for certain plugs flaptails, conrads, canal specials and canal poppers But pretty much pine for everything
else cept needles and darters, birch, maple, cherry.

Out of curiosity. Why don't a bunch of people get together and split a big order so as to be able to get a good load at much cheaper pricing.AYC is gonna get much harder to get soon from what the west coast lumber sites say due to a major diff in the weather out there.I'd jump on it as up here in Maine it's hard to even get good home grown wood as it gets shipped out of state real quick and buyin a lift is way beyond my pockets LOL

"THE" best AYC that I have was from Liberty Cedar. It was the rough 2x4, absolute top quality wood, better than the #1 2x2's I get down here and pick through at Medford Cedar. The stuff from Cedar 4 sale is good but I like picking my own out of the skid.

I know the powers to be have severed the ties but Salty has the best AYC and best price. Direct from mill so no middleman he told me. Picked some up yesterday. He has plenty and true 1 3/4 inch sq. stock. 3 and 4 footers. Well worth the trip to his place or by mail order. You won't be disappointed. I have done Cedar 4 sale and Liberty. This is real good quality and like I stated real 1.75 square stock. I was very happy. I did Downes and Reader last weekend too and got some birch and soft maple. Lots of stock but that stuff is getting pretty pricey, bring extra cash..

Agreed Paul. He just got about 2 pallets.

I am a bit pissed as I am 5 minutes from Scott's shop. You should have called. I would have met you there. I see him every 2 weeks or so.

I have a few AYC sticks I got from FishDoc that I would trade for good pine. Also have some Spanish Cedar, White Cedar, and Eastern Red Cedar I could include in a swap.

I was searching around different sites and came across one which differentiated between green and kiln dried. I thought if I had green wood then I would have issues like shrink, warp, cracks, accepting sealer... Does anyone purchase green lumber? The site I was looking at is Got Wood? Don't overlook Red Cedar either Ross, there a place in Salem that has Red Cedar ballisters. It turns nicely and is readily available up in our neck of the woods.
