The only shows I watch are on Discovery, National Geo & a few others like the one that has the show How it's made.
You couldn't pay me to watch any of these reality shows or ones like American Idol ect......
Wicked Tuna is a lot better than the stupid show they got on now, Moonshiners.

I'm not sure how his season went but I read on FB that his boat sank while at the dock. They were able to raise it but had some damage.

Pretty good. Better than watching American idol.

They should just run a 1 hr show of rods going off. I could watch that all night. It's like a heroin junkie watching a show of people shooting up.

I think the show showcases how absurdly dumb these guys are. Frankly I think it gives an overall poor image to the public. The intra-boat BS that is displayed on that show is not like that in real life(and most fisherman would not put up with that crap ) and makes them (comm tuna fisherman) look like a rather dim-witted group. I don't watch it anymore. Sportfish guys are a much more intelligent as a group.

The cod charter nonsense is ridiculous. These are my humps!

The southwest corner is my spot. Get off it.

I was explaining to my wife how the P-town boats seem to get along just fine with the drift fishing off the race for giants. There's no fighting. Everyone drifts in an orderly fashion.

Remember, even though this is "reality TV" the story lines and much of the meaning of what is said is scripted. What you see on TV isn't necessarily representative of how those guys really are. The producers need to introduce some drama to keep the audience entertained.

On the show they argue about numbers....on the NW they leave their anchor & ball out in the same spot for days. A real PIA dropping the hook and then seeing a ball 100 yds. of your stern.

thefishingfreak
01-30-2013, 05:14 PM
Noone leaves there ball overnight. That's a good way to loose it.
If you see an empty ball it's because they're either off on a fish, looking for bait, or just scouting around.

Even then you tend to lose them.

There was a small bite on the SWC this year. I would get out super early. Drop my ball, then steam in to the flats and get my bait. I'd come out and have 4 friends anchored real close.

LOL! These guys barely have a pot to piss in and complain about breaking even, taking spare jobs, doing something else, etc. In the big picture, what they get is chump change and it only last for a few months at best.

Tuna fishing is not competitive. At least I have never seen it as such. Do I want to catch a big fish? sure...do I care if your fish is bigger than mine? You have got to be kidding, frankly I would be happy for you!
The "lets see what I can do to this guy to piss this guy #^&#^&#^&#^& aspect of the show is absurd and is what make them look dumb. Bunch of goons with fishing rods. It is basically New England's version of those hillbilly's who catch catfish with their hands.

I don't watch it more than a few min /month anyway anymore so I don't really care. I would bet it gets canceled soon. Midwest interest? They are more interested in bass and walleye fishing.

I would much rather watch Jose' W fish for tuna on spin in Terry Nugent's CC. It is a lot more reality to me.

MakoMike
02-03-2013, 08:58 AM
The show isn't aimed at fishermen, if it was it would be on ESPN 2 and would only last one season. Its the non-fishermen that eat all that crap up, and most of that stuff is scripted, not spontaneous.

Your kidding...right. These guys are doing pretty good, not because of the show, but because the only one that actually only fishes for a living is Dave Marciano. You got to realize its a scripted show...its like a movie. None of the #^&#^&#^&#^& is real besides when they show them sticking one and what not. At least U know what is going on...think Mr Sandman is jealous...the show is all scripted except where Tyler was shoved...that was real and happened at the tinny tuna tournament held here in Gloucester...I think in the next two weeks there is a boat show in NJ...one of the characters will be making 2,000 for a four hour signing endorsement...some do not get paid much for each episode...and Mr Sandman should know people before degrading them ..one is a commercial airline pilot others have their own business....:)

Mr. Sandman
02-05-2013, 11:29 AM
Hardly jealous. The last thing I would want to do is emulate any of them. I am just judging them by their behavior on the few shows I have seen. I think they degrade themselves.
In some regard you right though, I should not call them names, for that I apologize. I don't know any of them and really don't watch the show very much except in passing but find their behavior degrades all other fisherman. (scripted or not)

Nearly all of them are constantly complaining about money and implying the other guy is always taking "his" share... and are trying to teach the other guy a lesson of some sort by getting some sort of at-sea revenge. It is a ridiculous waste of time and not entertaining. I saw a Tee shirt this summer that would be appropriate for them...

Tyler's dad has a large moving company in Nashua, that no doubt had a hand in financing that boat of his. He can crow all he wants about how he's paid for it. He wouldn't have gotten the loan if he weren't in the lucky gene club. The boy would be well served to learn some humility and appreciation for life's circumstances. Commercial fishermen have their own form of prairie justice... That said, he's put his time in over the years on others' charter boats. Think he would have learned something about ethics from them. Yes, he's a kid, but he doesn't have to act like a stupid kid.

According to him there was no loan involved, the father is loaded and told him to go buy any boat he wanted, not sure why he chose a 35 Donnell, I would have chosen a mid 40 ft Wes Mac !
As for him the way he appears on the show don't believe any of it.
He puts a LOT of fish in the truck also !

Don't tie a loop in the end that you tie to the boat
Have it go thru the bow chock, then bring it down to midship cleat or wherever you can reach it.
When you need to go Just uncleat the end and let it slip up the rail and thru the bow chock.
I use 1" yellow floating line so I can't run it over

Better yet, do splice a loop at the end of the line, then slip the loop through the cleat, but don't loop it over the cleat, just put a dowel through the loop. Attach a line to the dowel and to let the anchor go, just pull on the dowel line. That way you can release everything without leaving the cockpit.

Just watched the latest episode last night - question for you guys again on the economics of this. They build it up like there is a fortune to be made out there and many captains say they can make a whole year salary, but I just don't see it. I mean it's nine weeks in and the gross earnings for the top guys is about $50K for the entire boat, by the time they pay the crew and fuel and supplies is this really possible?

Marciarno is doing very well....he is not commercial fishing like he use to...he is chartered out for the summer....he is the best liked fisherman on the show.....u notice he does not belittle the others....next year they R in the planning stages for 15 shows.....Marciarno may be going to Europe for Net Geo in the coming months...he is booked solid for apparences....he is having fun.

That's great to hear about Marciano, he really does seem like a great guy and a great family man! That episode when he brought home the thresher for his family really showed that.

Still, I think the claims of big money to be made on BFT are kind of suspect based on what I'm seeing!

From the Gloucester Times:
Some of Gloucester’s favorite fishing captains will be back for a third season of reality television on National Geographic’s “Wicked Tuna,” based in the nation’s oldest seaport.

The show recently set ratings records in the network’s history with its April 21 episode when it scored a series-high, hooking in more than 1.2 million viewers. The first series hooked viewers around the globe, finding its way into 440 million homes in 171 countries and 38 languages.

Now, Season 3 means film crews will be in town again when the tuna season officially opens on June 1.

The local fishermen are thrilled at the success of the show and will be ready to battle it out again during the coming season as they hunt one of the “world’s smartest and fastest fish.”

The giant bluefin, which is at the top of the food chain, can weigh upwards of 1,500 pounds and exceed more than 10 feet in length. The fishermen, however, usually pull in fish between 400 and 800 pounds with just a rod, the way it has been done for centuries in a man vs. fish scenario.

Adding to the excitement of the hunt is the lucrative nature of the fishery, with one “monstah” fish bringing in upwards of $20,000, which creates rivalry among the fishermen, some whose livelihood depends on their success at sea. If a fishing vessel returns to shore with no fish, then the captain is out thousands of dollars in costs for fuel and provisions.

The second season — which concludes in the United States with a two-part season finale on May 5 and May 12 — is about to go global again.

To that end, Gloucester-based Capt. Dave Marciano was sent to Croatia a few weeks ago to film a promotional ad for the network for the premiere of Season 2 in Europe. For a fisherman who never travels anywhere, he enjoyed his trip to the Adriatic Sea and to a country where the ancient Romans once ruled.

The Wicked Tuna fans are diverse, from avid hunters and fishermen to concert pianists and college students. One new fan is Chris Cuomo, a newly appointed CNN anchor, who recently tweeted that he was “ridiculously pumped” for new episodes of the series.

The third season holds new surprises with Marciano taking to the seas in a newly outfitted boat, the Hard Merchandise, after it sank at the dock at the Gloucester Marine Railways last December when a fitting let go. Marciano was watching another reality show called “Moonshiners” at the time he got the call from the Coast Guard.

“After three months of extensive work, ‘Humpty Dumpty’ is officially back together again,” Marciano said of the boat, which was built in 1984 and which he bought used in the first place.

The newly refitted 37-foot Hard Merchandise is scheduled for its maiden voyage today when Marciano takes out press crews from Australia, Japan and France for a half-day trip our of Gloucester.

”The boat is better than ever. We put in a new engine, new wiring and new electronics,” Marciano said in a phone interview. “We anticipate a good season this year. But I have no excuses now because I won’t be fixing the boat all the time. That was my excuse last year.”

Marciano, whose own formal education ended with his diploma from Gloucester High in 1984, has tuition on his mind when he goes out fishing. His daughter Angelica is now in college and his son Joseph will graduate from Beverly High this June and start college in the fall. Joseph will work with his father aboard the boat during the Season 3 filming before he goes to St. Leo’s College in Florida to study business.

”I imagine that every fish I catch will be for tuition,” he joked. “Then I can whine about finances for two college students.”

Another Season 3 highlight is expected to feature the animated Paul Hebert as captain aboard his own boat. Hebert started out working as crew on other boats in the series. He is now captain of the fishing vessel Lisa & Jake as Season 3 comes to a close.

In season three, he will be aboard his own boat — the 42-foot “Wicked Pissah” — which is not yet in the water. The youngest of six boys, he said another highlight for him in the next season will be that his brother Bruce will come out of retirement to fish with him.

”He’s a legend of tuna fishing,” said Hebert.

Even though there is fierce competition on the seas, Hebert said that, out of water, fellow fisherman Dave Carraro, captain of the FV-Tuna.com, lent a helping hand when Hebert’s house in Vermont was destroyed from the deadly floods from Tropical Storm Irene that hit that August during the filming of Season 2. Carraro opened up his house until Hebert could get on his feet again.

Hebert also mentioned that his Facebook page has information on a benefit he is holding for a woman who is very ill, who he met when he was out looking for a boat and he wants to help her.

”I’m pumped to start Season 3,” he said. “I’m so glad to be able to do this.”

Capt. Dave Carraro echoed his sentiments.

”It’s a great thing. This started with a phone call almost three years ago and now we get to go back for a third season,” he said. “Plus it was Nat Geo’s No. 1 show. I never would have thought we’d be where we are at. I thought the show would do OK, but to go into Season 3, that’s very cool.”

Thanks MakoMike, that was interesting. I had no idea the show was that popular.

I catch the show when I'm not doing anything else, I might watch 1 out of 4 episodes.

The last episode I saw, the pot-heads on the Pinwheel were doubled up. And when one guy wanted to call out to the other, instead of saying "hey", they were using some kind of bird call with each other..."ca-KAW...ca-KAW...". It was very strange.

Did they explain why they do that, instead of saying "yo!"?

"just because of the way they dress does not necessarily mean they R potheads"

Agreed. I'm not making that speculation based just on how they dress. If it dresses like a duck, wears its hair like a duck, talks like a duck, and acts like a duck, it's a good bet it's a duck.

"most of the country is on pot"

I doubt that. I'm not saying it's rare, but no way does half the country smoke pot.

"young people seem to do foolish things....we were young once."

I have close friends who smoked pot when they were kids, I'm not condemning everyone who smokes pot. I'm saying that crew goes out of their way to be perceived as potheads. If you want to go out of your way to look and act like Zonker Harris from "Doonesbury", don't be shocked when people come to the only reasonable conclusion.

From the little I have seen of the show, those potheads kids can sure fish. And I always like it when the show switches from any boat to the Pinwheel, they usually have reggae music in the background.

ka-KAW, ka-KAW...I still am confused why they shout that...

From the Gloucester Times

The finale of the hit reality television show “Wicked Tuna” starts Sunday night, May 5, on the National Geographic Channel with a two-part conclusion featuring an epic battle that will ultimately reveal the next champion bluefin tuna fisherman out of Gloucester waters on May 12.

Season two began with the introduction of a newcomer, Tyler McLaughlin, described as a cocky young captain, aboard the fishing vessel Pin Wheel. McLaughlin’s goal is to beat out last year’s champion, Gloucester’s Dave Carraro of the FV-Tuna.com, who fishes with Gloucester native Sandro Maniaci.

Carraro, Gloucester’s reigning bluefin champion, starts the last week of the fishing season with a $20,000 lead over the catch of the Pin Wheel.

“We’re basically in the last quarter of the Super Bowl and it’s a near tie score and we are both bringing out our A game. As of the last episode, we are up to 12 fish and ahead by about $17,000. The more he fishes, the more fish I will catch. It keeps you on your toes. If he’s not catching, then I will take a day or two off,” said Carraro.

Meanwhile, in a notable late-season effort, Paul Hebert, who was fired from the crew of FV-Tuna.com with five weeks left in the season, is a captain aboard the Lisa & Jake, and proves to be a formidable competitor. Hebert continues to approach his goal of catching $50,000 worth of bluefin.

In a telephone interview this week, Hebert said the highlight of his first day as captain of the Lisa & Jake was the quick results.

“I put one line in the water and hooked up — it didn’t even hit the bottom and I landed a 400-pounder,” he said. “Then I went out the next day and caught another 400-pound. It was crazy.”

As season two comes to a close, Capt. Dave Marciano continues to face mechanical calamities and short fish aboard the Hard Merchandise, yet he continues to bring in lucrative catches that keep him in the game. His goal is to earn money to support his family, with one of his three children in college.

Closer to shore are Capt. Bill Monte of the Bounty Hunter and Capt. Ralph Wilkins of the Odysea who vie for strong catches before the season closes.

The rivalry among the captains concludes in a “shocking and heart-pounding” finale, according to a show spokesman. The May 5 episode at 9 p.m. is titled “Time Bomb” and the May 12 concluding episode is titled “Endgame,” which will reveal the top-earning boat of the season. National Geographic Channel recently announced that it will film a season three of the hit show based in Gloucester.

Ralph from the Odysea came into the tackle shop a few weeks ago and dropped off a bunch of brochures for his Charter business. (I wasn't here, my nephew was at the shop). He asked if he could leave them here for people who come in looking for charters.

Now, we do charters, over 150 of them last year, and granted 95% of them bass/blues, but we do tuna charters as well. He's got a "Wicked Tuna" trip for $1800, then a full-day for $1500, half day stripers/blues etc for $800 and a two hour sunset cruise for $300.

My feel is Ralph should do what he can to ride this wave, and maybe his tuna trips are big time and really don't compete with me, but the half day and sunset thing are a direct competition.

Our compromise will be we'll hold the brochures behind the counter, if people bring up the show, and seem wanting to drop those dollars, we'll hook them up with Ralph. If they want bass and blues and maybe some "smaller" tuna, they are ours!!

You're a lot more generous than I would be! :)

As I get older I am trying to make up for "some" of my past, and I am finding it just a whole lot easier to take the high road at times.

Over 150 last year....

That's legit, and about 125 more than most every one of the ridiculous "pro-staff wannabe rock stars" trolling around the Internet trying to be famous.

Chuck that crap in the trash - you're a good dude with nothing to make up for.

Is that Rich? Rich, I did a charter with you on Fathers Day last year with my 6 year old, Jason. You got his picture in the local paper, and helped him land a 25-pounder. Jason talks about that trip several times a week, We are trying to plan a trip up that way in the fall, hopefully you do fall charters too. You also hooked us up with a lobsterman friend, who took us all out to watch him check his pots, all 3 of my kids loved that one.

And what do I get for plunking down $1800 for a 'Wicked Tuna' charter? The pleasure of watching him get skunked yet again, followed by a fistfight back at the dock?

I'll pass...

These guys R in their glory and making it while they can....some sports R willing to pay more....prior to being on the show they would get 1200 for a day of cod fishing....It is no different going to florida and paying 1200 to go yellowtail snapper fishing....when ya can pay 45 bucks for the same thing.

Congrats jim on your son enjoying himself and remembering the good time that he had fishing and being with UUUUU...:)....when chartering I always made sure the kids had a great time and always mentioned to the parent or guardian to let the kid handle the first fish.

What I don't get is, how was the Odysea portrayed on that show, in a way that would inspire anyone to fish with him at all,let alone pay more than the going rate? He cought nothing, his only memorable moment was the fight.

Fair winds,

Jim

Hi Jim, yes it is me, I remember that trip well - we got the fish in tight, over on the bay side, pretty close to my slip. Chris (the lobsterman) has moved on, sold his boat and moved south to FLA., I think he's working on a rich guys boat, nice gig. See you in the Fall!

Andrew - if you've got the pro-staff order form for duct tape, can you grab me a few rolls on the next order?

Rich - glad to hear land and sea came through for you. I'm sure we'll be in your neighborhood in a few weeks.
