A message from the Saltheart School Academy of Rodbuilding. What's the interest in doing a rod building class this winter? It would be essentially the same as last year . Every Sat morning from 9 AM to 12 PM for 5 weeks. Maybe shrink it to 4 weeks but last year 5 worked out good.

Last year we all built Century Stealth 1 rods. This year I will let people decide what they want to build as long as its within my area of expertise (which is broad).

Best bet is to give me money for the parts and I get everything for the build. If you want to supply your own parts you must supply them all. In other words , if you supply the blank , you supply the seat , guides handle materials etc. I do not want to get stuck chasing down just the hard to find stuff. :)

Cost last year was $100. It will be the same this year for the lessons. What will change is that you need to send in the money ahead of time. I will not be getting $20 a week. Too much trouble. Also last year I lost my shirt on the parts do to estimating too low and do to 3 cancellations after I bought the blanks.

So this year its $100 for the classes , you pay the actual retail cost of any parts , I only buy parts you pay for in advance. Usually this means the built rod and classes will end up costing you about $75 less than a custom rod which is a good deal.

The classes will be in Cumberland , RI which is in the north east corner of RI. I asm very close to Rt 295 so its easy to get here.

Please post if interested. Start date will be determined by concensus of participants but I think about Feb 1 is a good target. Let me know your preferred start dates too.

I will take up to 10 people but will not do it unless at least 5 sign up and pay.

Any interest?

Anyone interested in learning to build rods that is close to where mike lives should take the class.

My buddy and I took the class last winter, it was great, you'll learn everything you need to do be able to build your own rods after the class, Ive built 10 rods since the class.

my advice is to take really good notes and pay attention, class covers a lot of info.

Hope you get a turn out mike, and happy new year man.

Hope your health is doing better too.

is this for surf rods only? need an albie rod or a tuna jigging rod

No it does not have to be a surf rod. I have done many tuna rods but you need to provide a lot of details as to what you want. An Albie rod (boat I assume) is no problem.

Wish I lived closer. Saw Chef's rods and they looked great, and he spoke quite highly of saltheart's class.

If I was anywhere near by, I would be all over this. Great opportunity.

Great class, i highly recommend it. I love the rod i made. You are getting a custom rod that is built right, for basically the parts and you will learn a ton if you pay attention and take notes.

So it looks like 3 takers so far? I will ask a couple of non-internet buddies if they are interested. they may not want to make the haul up from so-co, though...

Right now there are not enough people to make the class worth offering. I'll leave this up until Sunday night. If I don't have 5 by then I guess it will not happen this year.

Wear a GoPro?:rotf2:

I video'd an SWE seminar on tuna rigs presented by Big Jay. Of course for personal use only! Helps to ask permission first.

Sorry but we didn't get the minimum number of people to make it worth while. If I get a better idea about format (not involving every Sat morning for 5 weeks) I may try again.
