That magazine gets worse by the issue! They should just rename it "Saltwater Boat Fisherman"! I remember back in the day they used to cover all aspects of saltwater fishing.....boat and surf! There are so many more options now like boat, surf, kayak, people use jet skis!!! You would think they might want to expand their demographic and appeal to a broader range of saltwater fishermen, sell more magazines and maybe lure more advertisers to the magazine???? I have not bought an issue in about 4 years!!! I pick it up at the news stand once in awhile to see if there is anything worth reading but its just the same old crap.......boat fishing and always the same methods and locations!!!

No money in peasant fishing - fortunately OTW, NEF, and now Coastal Angler are still with us.

SWS caters to where the big money advertisers live, and that is in high end boats and offshore fishing. Those guys have yearly advertising budgets that are larger than most of our yearly salaries and they want to hit their specific target audience as it only make good business sense.
Frank Daignault was told years ago by Woolner, if I remember the story correctly, that he was no longer going to be able to purchase his articles as there was simply no advertising that could be connected to his writing. If you want to get surf related information your only real options nowadays are the magazines that John mentioned, the likes of Surfcasters Journal and websites like S-B/SOL/etc. Even the print mags that are still around walk a very tight line balancing content and drawing ad dollars.

This has been the case for over 30 years, Larry. Since the late 70s. Lyman and Woolner both retired and SWS was purchased by a big publishing group. They stated at the time that they were changing their editorial policy and targeting a different (and better monied) demographic. They don't run party boat articles anymore, either.

Jeez.. what a happy guy you are...

If Bigfish lures ever realized they make more money making lures for a fishery other than the surf, I guess we should all hope they tank..

with the contributors you'd get and that range of methods

you'd draw in plenty of advertisers... i'm sure.

I grew up on boats and make no secret that I do both...

You consider any business changing to make money or stay afloat selling out? Surfcasting is a niche fishery. we think it is awesome, but sailfish in mexico or tarpon in Florida sell more SWS mags in Iowa...

Like MikeP said they changed in the 70's, and thats when I stopped buying it even though I owned a boat then. SWS is way beyond any boat owner that lurks heres imagination. And I don't think I read that Larry ripped people who owned boats.

On a lighter note, Larry, you should read Kayak Angler, it's a decent magazine focused on one method of fishing, which is kinda cool. The thing there is that you can fish from a kayak in any state in the country, which I'm sure makes it worth their while to publish.

OTW and the Fisherman do a great job of being all things to all people, I hope they have a good financial footing cause that would be a huge loss to ever lose them....
