View Full Version : Storm Clean up?
nightfighter 02-09-2013, 08:23 AM Was out briefly last night. Drifting has erased any sign of that, and I can't even make out any snowbanks from town plows. They last came through in the middle of the night. Not sure it makes sense to get out yet. No one has been down the street in many hours. Planning to get at it in a couple hours if the wind dies down....

Clogston29 02-09-2013, 08:36 AM Was up at 4 to clear drive way and get wife off to work (nurse, no calling out option). Got the drifts on deck knocked down before daughter woke up. Snowed in alone with 2 year old and puppy, going to be a long day.

Pete F. 02-09-2013, 08:43 AM Looks like maybe 8 whole inches here in VT
pbadad 02-09-2013, 09:08 AM I have more snow than my jumbo Toro can handle. Mearsured areas 30" and for the most part 24-28". Out for an hour to open driveway, I have another 300' to go!! It's no use now, no snowplow on the road and just as much on road. Jeez, gonna need a bucket loader!!!!
stripermaineiac 02-09-2013, 10:04 AM Got 3 feet here but the drifts are nuts. took 2 trys just to unbury my yukon which was under an 8ft drift.Tried gettin a pic all you see is snow flyin in the air an snow flakes. LOL The driveway snow bank isn't gonna be fun.
Rob Rockcrawler 02-09-2013, 10:26 AM Stretched the belt on my snowblower. I figured i would clear a path on the lake for my tilts, bad idea i think the slush killed the girl.
JackK 02-09-2013, 10:56 AM Still snowing like crazy here. Good thing I filled the birdfeeders- the little guys are going to town
spence 02-09-2013, 11:17 AM The ice is crazy. The lines to our house are almost 3" in diameter and its coax!

RickBomba 02-09-2013, 02:56 PM Ugh, between prepping and painting the bedroom this weekend, sleeping on a leaky aerobed in the living room last night, and shoveling today, I am super beat. We didn't finish all of the cars (figured parking all four cars nose to ass in the driveway would help...NOT!
And I also missed the huge front end loader that had the operator pass out in the middle of going down 117 in front of my house, spin around twice and smash the bucket into the telephone pole across the street. I guess it was high Waltham drama.
Saltheart 02-09-2013, 03:06 PM Took me half an hour to finally get out my door. All doors were drifted up. I wasd able to get just a hand out then kept sweeping away the stuff pilled up in front of it as I inched the door open. When I got out I shoveled just enough to get the door open freely. By then I was already winded and went in.
Driveway has about 4 feet at the end where they plowed then it drifted over. Car is covered.
One step at a time. Not going anywhere anyway until the end of the driveway gets cleared out.
Finaddict 02-09-2013, 03:07 PM Still more shoveling to do, despite the work done so far ... while shoveling, I felt like one of those convicts who try to shovel out of prison with a spoon, every time I stopped to check on my progress, it appeared as if nothing was done at all.
stripermaineiac 02-09-2013, 03:10 PM Thought I was done then went out back an saw the 6 ft drift blocking the back door. Prob is that it's over 60 ft long along the deck to get to the door through the drift. Time for a beer an to re-evaluate this LOL
buckman 02-09-2013, 03:38 PM Back at the house after the tide changed. House held up well. Wind and salt spray took care of the shoveling . Went to lowes and somehow snagged the last propane heater . Now to keep the pipes from freezing . I'm guessing days before power is restored

stripermaineiac 02-09-2013, 04:20 PM Beer tasted good now time to go shovel again. Takin 2 beers with me. Snow keeps them nice n cold.
JohnR 02-09-2013, 04:42 PM Mike - call me tomorrow - I can come up with snowblower

fcap60 02-09-2013, 04:56 PM I was out 4 times yesterday thinking I was really on top of this one. When I woke up this AM and went outside it was as if I never removed 1" of snow. We have about 3' and in some areas more. My wife and I teamed up and did it in 2 stages today (I'm not risking a heart attack or other injury). We have 2 cars freed up and can move them forward about 10' in the driveway, then we clean in back of them. The problem is the TOWN hasn't come by my street yet and there is nowhere to move the snow. I still have one car completely buried and my just sit that way for a while.
ProfessorM 02-09-2013, 04:58 PM My arms are like rubber. Wrestling with a snowblower with snow over the top of it is only a little bit easier than shoveling a 200 foot driveway and to think I used to shovel the whole thing for 15 years. What was I thinking. Seen worse storms but this one was plenty bad enough for me. Probably had at least 2 feet but it seemed like it was 3 foot in the friggin driveway. Feeling old right now. Wife better wait on me hand and foot for rest of night. Wish I had more kids. Going to watch the golf and dream about living in Monterey.

John, if you can't make it, let me know I'll go over with the Ariens
I need to blow 30" off of the top of the Jeep any way
Higgie 02-09-2013, 05:31 PM Cleared mine in about hour and a half sucked down a few heady's then shoveled out my neighbors who have had done recent health issues. Town just opened our street an hour ago.

vineyardblues 02-09-2013, 05:37 PM I hate every one of my neighbors that don't own a snowblower and count on me! It was OK 25 years ago, getting old now adays ..
Is this the grumpy thread :)
nightfighter 02-09-2013, 06:07 PM Got my house done enough to go and do the jobs in the neighborhood. Then packed the blower in the Tahoe to do my other jobs. Got pulled over, threatened with a fine, and sent home....... So I loaded it into my work truck and got half of them done before it got dark. Back tomorrow, as the town plows will plug every driveway again over night... I'm whipped from wrestling the Ariens, but it was a champ.
Finaddict 02-09-2013, 06:16 PM Ross, is the driving ban still on? I thought I had seen more cars out and about just before I called it a day for shoveling around 4:30 or 5:00.
nightfighter 02-09-2013, 06:19 PM Ended at 4pm.
stripermaineiac 02-09-2013, 06:23 PM Took me 3 shipyards an a sam adams to do the back door. Lookin for some hot wings but everyplace is still closed.Went lookin an ended up pullin the guy down the street with a snow plow out of the ditch.got a 6 pack for it. Went home an havin grill cheese beer an advil LOL.Done till tomorrow.
stripermaineiac 02-09-2013, 06:25 PM Hey Pater. Charge them a 12 pack per driveway. Works. LOL

This is pretty much my experience. Except the wife is trapped at work and my partner is a 49 farmall with a small loader. Still took almost 2 hours of work to get the driveway mostly clear. Town trucks still nowhere in site.

I have a plow guy who has been reliable for 6+ years now. I haven't heard from him yet though. Right now I'm within 4 feet of my car door. If I can move the car out after he plows the bottom of the driveway he can do the top part and also he gets almost to my side door. If for some reason he's out of action I'll send out an SOS. :) Thanks for the offers.
BEETLE 02-09-2013, 07:38 PM High tide today at Fore River, Weymouth. logged in 6 +hours today - did my house and 2 others - all ready to head to work tomorrow at 5AM. :wall:
Bronko 02-09-2013, 08:37 PM We got hit hard. My problem is I have nowhere to thow the snow due to another house (city life) I almost have to throw it twice. The Ariens was a beast as usual. Beer and Advil tonight.

ivanputski 02-09-2013, 09:19 PM Are you guys shoveling your roofs? we got 28" here in central Ct. It looks like a lot of weight. My concern is ice-dams... also, they are calling for straight rain on monday, and that will make the snow very very heavy on the roof.
Any thoughts?
Jackbass 02-09-2013, 09:26 PM This is as bad a snowfall as I have seen I. A while. Spent four hours building two mounds at the shop last night went back this AM around 7 after I did my house with the snow blower. Looked likeI had never been there. Got halfway through and lost 4wd did a decent job In 2wd. Had the truck inside the shop for a few hours gonna go back now and see If I can lock it in four high at the xfer case and plow some more.

Ivan,I'll be shoveling my roof tomorrow got 38" where I am in east hartford. The south side of my roof has a huge drift has to be around 4' of snow on there. The rain in the forecast had me worried to. plus that snow isn't light and fluffy stuff as it is.Shouldn't be too bad I shoveled it a few times back when we had that october storm and the year before that. Just have to be smart about it, Don't get within 4' of the edge and there most likely will be some ice forming under the snow already so definetly take that into consideration.
Jackbass 02-10-2013, 12:24 AM Gave it the Fonzi bump tonight good to go. The radio is stuck on Fats Dominio though

Fishoholic 02-10-2013, 01:25 AM Shoveled out my landlord and I's driveway and walkways. The walked to end of the street to clear the massive pile to get to the main road and while I was shoveling 5 EP DPW trucks drove past me staring at me with their plows up. 5th one got the finger. It's cool I don't mind shoveling snow in the middle of pawtucket ave dodging cars.. jerks

Yeah, here's my thoughts. I shoveled 3 or 4 years ago when we got a ton and then I said to myself "why the F*&^& do I pay for insurance". If it caves in this time I'll get a new roof with those architectural shingles. and Liberty Mutual will pay for it. Check with them yesterday and I'm covered.
ProfessorM 02-10-2013, 01:10 PM Lots of ornamental shrub and tree damage from this storm. The wet snow to start pulled over a lot of stuff and then 2 feet on top of that is going to bust up a lot of stuff. Not even worth trying to get the snow off as you end up doing a lot of damage trying that. Probably have to tie up a lot of stuff when the snow goes and hope for the best or prune heavily this spring.

striperman36 02-10-2013, 02:52 PM snow was stickin the the blower blades this pm never seen that happen. ate the pooper scooper had to sawzall it out. Snow is over the chest of the Sheperd, the Corgi go about 6 ft, was submarining

Saltheart 02-10-2013, 04:38 PM I'm dug out finally. Plow guy just finished. haven't seen piles like this in a long time!! feels good to be able to go out and drive around if I have to.
Thanks again for the offers of help but things worked out good with my normal guy , it just took longer than normal do to the excessive amounts of snow.
striperman36 02-10-2013, 04:51 PM Good to hear.
PRBuzz 02-10-2013, 07:09 PM This time I really have to do it: install the manual release safety device for the electric garage doors.:smash: I bought it 3-5yrs ago, hope I can find it. We don't have a 3rd access.
Being efficient moved the snow blower from the shed to the garage Friday morning. Lost power 8PM Friday, access snow blower 5PM Sunday when power restored.
Mike P 02-10-2013, 07:52 PM I got rid of most of the slush and concrete snow Friday night. Made yesterday's work a breeze. The town started plowing early, so I was also able to clear about 8" of plow wall at the end of the driveway Friday night.
PRBuzz 02-11-2013, 08:24 AM Gotta git me one of these, any chance ProfM you can make me one in the off season? That's off winter so during fishing season....:rotf2:

When you install it, try to minimize the length of the rope and don't put the handle on it if you don't have to. I've heard a few reports about the scumbags using coat hangers to pull the rope and let themselves in. Then they use tools already in the garage to break into the house.
Justfishin' 02-12-2013, 07:16 PM It's Tuesday night-
I manage a 50 acre property with a mile long, uphill, hairpin turn driveway and the plow guy quit last storm, so its up to me. I've had to hike up it twice in the snow because the tractor- a 37 hp 4WD Kubota- has gotten stuck at least 6 times due to the ice under the 30"( now 24" after the rain) of snow. I tried to get a bigger machine to come over and they're having the same trouble, sliding on ice and getting stuck. Everyone is looking for chains for their equipment, the parts couter at the local equipment dealer was 5 deep at 4:30 today. I still have over a half mile uphill to plow. This sucks. I want to be somewhere else where there's no freekin gd snow or bitchy clients.:splat::lossinit:
