Here's the reason I have not posted plug pic's recently. I've put more than a few hours in this project. It is a strip built 2 person kayak designed by Nick Schade. It took me 7 weeks to get my hands on 3, 19 and 20 foot long pieces of Genuine Mahogany from South America. This kayak is built from one of those pieces that started out rough at 3"x8"x20 feet. All strips were indexed and numbered as they were cut, so the kayak could be built with consecutive pieces. You can see the result in a repeating pattern on the finished boat. The accent pieces are also from only one board from Pennsylvania of nicely figured Tiger Maple. For the most part, only 3 tools were used to strip the hull and they are, a razor knife, block plane and a sanding block. I've got the better part of 350 hours in this project.

I have been ogling cedar strip ones for the past several years. Yours is stunning. How heavey is it? Is it going to fit out of the cellar door/stairs O.K.? Did you buy the strong back from Schrade?

Thanks guy's ,yes it is a beautiful design. Yes, it is the Microbootlegger, it weighs in at around 40 pounds, and it has made it out of the basement to apply the spar varnish for UV protection. I used a strongback that I made previously for a 17' Rangeley for a stand. The actual strongback for this project is a 2x4" square tube frame. I purchased the plans only and made the forms as well. Here are some pic's of the early stages.

been busy working on several things this fall-winter. Not just plugs. Here is where I am at this point. Got 4 vises pretty much done. Still have to machine the jaw holder but need to figure out which size I am going to put in so that part is un done. This has taken most of my spare time since last year but I want a new rod or 2. Then I got a cypress striper with ayc fins to maybe hang on the wall down the cape or a weather vane. Still got to figure out the finish and such. Probably end up looking like this next fall too. Only so many hours in a day. Then plug wise I got 1 jointed darter done for a promise. a couple tiger maple Bass Aquas for a promise. For me I have some needles of various sizes. Some I already make and a few new ones. Some top water stuff , canal and a Gibbs copy. Darters. A Pichney jointed so I can give VB back his original. A large and small Pichney Danny and a med. BM Danny copy. AS you can see I got lots to do before I get them done and this weekend has been all snow removal

Did you ever throw one of those Bass Aquas, Paul?
Coolest looking plug ever.

Not sure if I'll have all my projects done by plugfest but I'll try.

Last spring I had a five day hospital stay for a collapsed lung and it was brutal. Didn't have to do with dust but this winter I noticed it was bother ing me so I made my dust collector useful and ran it to all the things I was too lazy to run it to in the past. Just before the storm noticed a better system on craigslist for short money so I went for it.

Dedicated some time to hooking it up instead of just turning as I normally would and no regrets. Actually nice to not have everything covered in dust.

Second Pic is some senior surface donny's (one of my favorite plugs) that need epoxy and mixed batched small pencils and conrads.

Below is this weeks project. Hope to make a couple knock-offs of each.

bottle, bottle darter- swimmer thing? and a few darters. the yellow one is this years version. so far in limited tests a little more aggressive than the greens which are last years model and while very stable in fast water just too tame (more swimmer than darter) for the spots i fish most often.

Dan, they are the most beautiful fly tying vices you will see..... Hope to own one someday. Paul builds them and generously donates one for a raffle to raise money to keep the lights on here. I don't do very well on raffles here, but that is the one I would put at the top of my list! (and I can't tie worth a crap, but sure would be practicing a lot more with one!) Look even better than in the photos! Mine would be out on display at all times. Piece of art, I say!

Getting ready for the spring. I got a new Mojo for Christmas and needed to have something to throw. 6.5 inches, 2 3/4 oz. A few had already been etexed, rigged and tested, but most were airbrushed today. Not as nice as Saltheart's or Paul's, but I'm pleased. I love those 1 oz pencils of Salthearts. I have been making a 1 oz thin pencil for years but I think I will play around with a shorter one like Saltheart's as well.

Wow fellas you guys have been busy!
Man I am way behind the ball....a lot of great stuff being built and posted on this forum!!
Well I finally found a little time to get a few things finished, and at the same time get rolling on some new stuff ( little girl is teething and that doesn't leave a lot of time for building or sleep) Here are some of the crank baits I've been working on and finally finished. First attempt at foiling..didn't turn out as well as planned, but with me everything has it learning curve. Hard to capture in these pics (cell phone) but some of the color shifts in the sun are very cool. I will be making some more in the future.

http://i883.photobucket.com/albums/ac37/muskyslayer4430/DSCF3418_zps81106f15.jpg

I also cut a bunch of flaptail and swimmer blanks along with my large Musky spooks (a pic of a finished one for reference). The flaptalis and swimmer blanks are 6 inches and between 2.5 (flaptails) and 3 oz (swimmers). The Musky spooks are 8.5 inches and about 4.5 oz, I really love the action of these guys and really hope to slay some waterwolfs with them this season.

Gave it a swim today in some current, for winging it on this one I was somewhat happy. It did not roll over, dug in good and swims about 2-3 ft. some darting action but also a little too much wiggle. I did not weight it before test but I think it needs weight aft of the balance point. Added 1/2 oz. and will try again tomorrow. That's 5.5 oz. with the weight added.

Wow, nice work from many builders. Plugs and non-plugs alike!

I finally took a couple pics of what I have been up to lately. Some more of the slider/jerkbait type of plugs I like to make and fish in different sizes as well as some needles and some new swimmers I have been working on. There is a bunch of other stuff I did not get pics of yet.

A couple mahogany needles in mackerel and purple scale and a slow sinking slider. All right around 6" (pic is a bit distorted)

3 of my new swimmers. They are 5.5" and swim just subsurface to around 4 feet depending on retrieve speed. 2 macks still need epoxy.

A box of assorted stuff. HEAVY maple macks, herring and yellow sliders, blurple jointed etc.

JMAC_kerel

And more...

Thanks. No, they are handcarved like most everything else I do, even the needles. I do not own a lathe. The only turned plugs I have been working on are the swimmers that Glen (GooGoo Man) has turned for me using my template/prototype.

This year instead of puttng everything on the diplay boards at plugfest, i used 4" tie wraps to secure the plugs ot the peg boards... the result was a well thought out neat grouping...to see them you'll have to come to plugfest...meanwhile... I finally rigged a bunch of plugs I've finished.. a little bit of everything... I tried a new/slightly differant weighting scheme on my giant jointeds.. IMHO they actualy swim better... instead of a small chunck of lead in the tail, i put it in the front half of the tail section, ( there is also lead in the rear half of the front section) the result is a flatter swmming, " snakier" looking plug.. I havent tested it on fish... time will tell.. I also made them a bit thinner than in the past and swapped out the 5/0 hooks I used to use for 4/0... I'll have everything you see ( plus others i have hanging ) with me at plugfest...

I just wired and tailwrapped the last nine I will have done for Plugfest. Epoxy and spinner tonight.... A lot of finished plugs have already been put into the hands of others locally, but I should still have close to 30 ready for Saturday. It has been a huge ramp up for me from past years. A lot of it has been the result of budgeting the time needed for each step and not rushing the steps. The amount of attrition I have from turning through to finish epoxy is still too high, but it is less with every batch. I remember not too long ago, starting to turn on the Tuesday before, and epoxying at 10 pm the night before Plugfest....didn't work out so well, as those who "accepted" them in trade can tell you. (They were just being polite, I am sure...) I have kept some of those sticky pieces of crap prominently on my bench as a reminder. And yes, they are still tacky.
So I am excited it is almost here and that I am wrapping it up. I will start turning some stuff for myself after the bash. I am grateful for all the advice and ideas I have had here over the years to help me produce the jigs, spinners, and the process to get to this point. It is fun. Looking forward to Saturday.

Here are a few things I have been working on.

A squid darter, the paint work was inspired by a flaptail squid, Greek had given me, lots of time into this one, redesigned my darter & am happy with the darting motion.

5 1/2" Nike, played with them a bit and although the original was unweighted I found them to swim better with a bit of lead in them.

Handcarves are my new obsession! The yellow one is a 7" redfin copy, the middle one is an 8", I wanted a slightly larger plug, the 3rd one is 11" around 4 oz , the mackerel paint was done by Jmac, they look lifelike!

GooGoo Man

A few more,

6 1/2" Nike, borrowed an original off of Gremlin, Thanks Jamie!
Reduced the tailweight a bit & made 2 different versions, single & double hooks, also AYC & sugar pine, added a little more belly weight in the single hook version to compensate, this plug has a darting motion that is very awesome!
Not sure how the original swam, but am very impressed with them.

Next batch is some skinny pikies Fatneck & I made started messing with last year.

Man, there is some incredible work on this post. My wife keeps asking what I am going to do with all these plugs and I tell her that "he who dies with the most plugs wins." Then I show her this post, yep she just rolls her eyes. Here are the final ones painted and waiting for tails. Three 7" Sandeel swimmers and two 4.875 musso swimmers. I messed up on the white one and must have drilled it for a high slot lefty #1, so we will see how that one swims. May be a good twist, little deeper.

Next year I am going to plug fest, this year I used all my vacation for my daughters swimming but this is her last year. Can't wait to see that event.
