I'm sure the guys in Worcester an Western MA will agree. Just not that big of a storm. ProfessorM 02-11-2013, 06:57 AM Ihave lived in Lakeville for 20 years and have seen probably 4 storms worse as far as depth but the wind and consistency of the snow made this a brutal storm. Feel bad for the people without heat. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device fishsmith 02-11-2013, 07:40 AM There have been worse storms but closer to the coast the first few hours of the storm made the heavy crusting coat which caused all the down trees. Here is the house behind me, I think there was a microburst because 1/2 dozen trees went down in a small area. https://plus.google.com/photos/116481534624082410901/albums/5843344845229149105?authkey=CIbc5rChqbC2MQ Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device jredfly 02-11-2013, 08:26 AM There have been worse storms but closer to the coast the first few hours of the storm made the heavy crusting coat which caused all the down trees. I agree just haven't seen this much in such a short time frame in a while. The ice storm a couple years ago was far more destructive. But I pulled into my shop to plow Friday night and the snow was over the plow. Spent 4 hours there and it barely looked like I went on Saturday morning. A lot of my snow was drifted snow so that added to my problem. I have never had the 4wd motor get frozen due to it being below the snow. This time it did. I live in Orange CT about 3 blocks from Milford CT that got 38 inches. I had around the same. Not a lot of wind, no trees down, no erosion and did not lose power. But 38 f 'in inches of snow? The prior record for 120 years was 28 inches and you beat that by 10 inches? Biggest snow I have ever seen in my 58 years. I went out Friday night in the height of the snow and was like an old movie where the guy is caught in an Alaskan Blizzard. Crazy snow. How does the snow compare to the bliz of 78? I thought we had over 3 feet then? I was only 9 yrs old so I may be over exagerating. piemma 02-11-2013, 11:19 AM We live in the NW corner of RI. Worcester snow belt. Blizzard of 78, 54" of snow with 14' drifts. Drifts up to the gutters on the houses. They used a road grader with a 12' V-plow to open my road. This was good storm but we have had bigger that they didn't forecast. Moses 02-11-2013, 11:33 AM Just got power back last night and catching up on things. Hope everyone here made out ok during the storm. A couple pics from my neighborhood. Moses 02-11-2013, 11:35 AM A few more..... MakoMike 02-11-2013, 11:35 AM I lived in Ridgefield CT during the 78 storm and we had a little over 3 feet of snow. This storm, where I live now, in Newtown CT we got 29 inches. Pete_G 02-11-2013, 12:41 PM Probably as is often the case it depends where you're at. All you need is a band to set up over you for a bit and you're at least a few inches deeper then the next town over. I think Providence and surrounding areas lucked out a little bit, it was only a top 10 storm. For Boston, Hartford, and Worcester it was in the top 5. wader-dad 02-11-2013, 01:12 PM I grew up in Derby, right over the Orange line. How does the snow compare to the bliz of 78? The Blizzard of 1978 had less snow around New Haven- around 28 inches but the storm was much worse because of the winds. Sustained winds were in the 70 mph and there was a reported gust in Mass of 114 mph. The storm was around for 30 hours. and drifts up to 17 feet in CT. But in terms of snow fall for a short period of time- they estimate that in that snow band that hit Milford- Hamden snow rate was 6 inches per hour. Not much drifting near me. this is my air conditioner box. Jim in CT 02-11-2013, 01:30 PM I live about 20 miles west of Hartford, we had a good 3 feet of snow. Here's what I saw when I opened my garage door, that little black thing is the side view mirror on my Honda Accord. The one nice thing was the snow was as light and fluffy as it gets, thank God. Took a nice stroll around my neighborhood in my snow shoes, at times I was a good 10 feet off the ground. Jim in CT 02-11-2013, 01:32 PM And I still can't make a fist with either hand because of holding the controls of the snowblower all weekend. In Providence Marriott at start of storm. 56 inches of snow. Drifts so high, had to get up to the 2cd floor to see out the windows. Families found dead in cars. One blueberry pancake to eat in 3 days. Walked to Attleboro, Ma on the rte 95 dividers in platform shoes and bell bottom pants. Didn't get back home to Franklin, Ct until Sunday (storm started previous Monday or Tuesday morning). Every storm since can't compare... My buddy's car was found in Providence under 25 feet of plowed up snow. Got it back in May... Hard to forget. I'm 58. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
