View Full Version : adding external monitor or second screen to fishfinder
thefishingfreak 02-18-2013, 08:16 AM Are there any options for adding an external monitor to an existing display?
A unit with video outputs?
Not much info on the web. I believe hummingbird (possibly) can do this but not sure.
Not looking to break the bank, but how can I put a small 10-12" color monitor/display in a remote location?
Say I want to put a small screen on the transom so I can stare at it all day, without having to mount my fish-finder there..
Mr. Sandman 02-18-2013, 09:29 AM I have a bunch of flat panels screens in my basement and I was thinking the same thing, I bet there is a way to get a cockpit display out of this....I know many of the newer models have a (free) software upgrade that allow a wifi connection now so you can have a ipad or even cellphone be a display. I know ray and simrad do.
i'm certain it can be done, as I have seen it on raymarine systems on a few boats. As to how, or how much, I am no help.
Sea Dangles 02-18-2013, 11:07 AM Why not call somebody that does it for a living? Instead of "I think so" you could tell them what you have and get a quick answer. Voyager Marine in Essex could help you.
MakoMike 02-18-2013, 12:18 PM Any of the integrated systems could do it from a "black box" depthsounder. But you would have a figure out how to run some wires from one unit to the other.
likwid 02-18-2013, 06:52 PM First off, what hardware?
thefishingfreak 02-18-2013, 07:10 PM What I want is a cheap display on the transom without having to spend 3 grand on a system and another 2 grand for a multi function display to go with said system
My kids must have 5 of these monitors between psp games and portable DVD players etc.
the hummingbird 1100 series has video out where you can just plug a cheapass monitor into it and be done.
I'm going to call hummingbird Tomorow and or go up to west marine to play withit. I am willing to spend some dough but if I can't get a second screen without some sort of "network" or black box or other fancy schmancy Mumbo jumbo I might as well stick with what I have and go buy another fishfinder to bolt on the back where I want it.
Seems like it should be so easy to do nowadays.
Video out --> to portable display

Buy a mirror.
Sorry just had to.....
thefishingfreak 02-20-2013, 03:38 PM maybe I'll just point the GoPro at the fishfinder then I can watch it live thru the app on my Iphone

THERE YA GO !!!
OR
Dont know about Iphoney, but my cell phone has an HDMI out connector and came with the cable... Easy to hook up to a small flat screen, turn on the camera feature and just point it at the FF..
PRBuzz 02-20-2013, 04:45 PM You going to add a rear helm too, to keep on the fish in the 2nd fish finder monitor?:uhuh:
thefishingfreak 02-20-2013, 05:11 PM Yes already have the twin controls for the rear.
No wheel, just dual/dual function sticks

He actually has a mirror.
It's actually a very good idea.
I had one on my Parker and have a few to put on my BHM.
Looking at it while underway is much easier than turning around watching passengers.
