For whatever reason I tend to palomar eel hooks and snell chunking hooks. I use the same hook, Gami Octopus - 7/0 for eel, 10/0 for chunks. What do you prefer, and why? I can tie both in the dark, and have had equal success with both.

I don't chunk. I don't snell. I use an improved clinch knot for 99% of my tying. Only exception would be an Albright knot for line to leader on conventionals.

Palomar and Improved Clinch are pretty much all I use.

Certain hooks are designed to be snelled. Bent eye snell straight eye palomar. other than that it's a preference and what works for you.

I snell for hooks that I am tying a leader to. Otherwise I TA clip an eel hook to my plugging leader :-D

put me in this category mostly for the same reason... i cast and troll my eels... thus snelling keeps them tracking straight...

I really only chunk for drum, but when I do I snell. I have read enough to convince me that there is a higher hook up rate for whatever reason. I don't eel much, but if I am tying heavy mono, I palomar or regular clinch. Assuming the others are using heavy mono, I am suprised to see so many improved clinchers. My understanding is that the improved is uneccessary and maybe counterproductive with heavy mono.

Palomar 99% of the time, easy to tie and most important to me is it goes thru the eye of the hook twice.

Yes as others have stated bend eyed hooks are pretty much made to snell.

I just use an old piece of gum to hold my line to my hook :rotf2:

I snell my hooks, but I would think the Palomar knot would be equally as successful. I wouldn't give it a second thought.

I use improved clinch knots from leader to snap or clip and palomar for braid to swivel.

I here I am using duct tape for all of these years. I have never heard of these knots you speak of.

the duct tape works fine, until I get a strike - then I tend to loose a lot of hooks :rotf2:

I don't think I could trust the hookset having my hook on a clip?
I can snell a hook without using the eye hole at all, I guess I am curious which is a stronger knot. I have always heard the palomar is a stronger knot, but never had an issue with a snell.

There is a certain spot I plan on chunking the hell out of this year, and getting ready to tie leaders.

i once had a Palomar knot fail me
somehow it unraveled :fury:

not sure if i tied it wrong from fatigue or what

but now after tying a Palomar
i back it up with a clinch knot

this makes the "tag end" stick straight out
and its easier to clip off
plus it's allot harder to clip the wrong line

I prefer to snell a hook. I'd rather the line tighten on the hook rather than on itself.

Please keep you love life out of this. :hihi::hihi:

I prefer a snell, but I can't tie on quickly or at all in the dark, so I use a palomar most of the time.

Snell - but will also use the Uni-knot system for a wide variety of other needs.

Import a big fan of snelling, if it's any constellation I use Segaur 50# and 5/0 Gamakatsu HD live bait I haven't chunked and dunked in years so can't recommend their.

Best of luck to you this year Jon!

Uni knot. You can tie a hook with it , you can snell a hook with it and you can tie line to a leader with it.

Between snelling and palomar i would go palomar.
