View Full Version : What is your one go to plug?
Slipknot 03-19-2013, 03:32 PM I know it makes a difference where you are fishing, but what is your first plug you think of that has caught you the most fish or you have the most confidence in?
For me, on the beach lately it's a needlefish plug, years ago pre-seals taken over it used to be the yo-mag darter but I don't fish way out there any longer.
For the canal, it's a jig, a mr.pogie eelskin jig to be exact.
Boat it would be a howdy or spook, love to see them hit on top.
bassmaster 03-19-2013, 03:43 PM what ever i can swipe out of your bag.......

Loaded 7" redfin or a bucktail... kind of a toss up between those two.
Uncle Rob 03-19-2013, 03:58 PM No matter where when or why I'm fishing any one spot or another, I'll always have a Kast Master in my bag!
Higgie 03-19-2013, 04:01 PM I know its not a plug but a 9" all black sluggo is my go to. Rigging depends on situation.

Bruce,
If you're talking specifically plugs and not metals, bucktails, or soft plastics I'd also have to say the loaded 7 inch redfin - chicken scratch pattern for all around versatility. Best $8 bargain in surfcasting.
DZ
numbskull 03-19-2013, 04:24 PM I could go all season with these six, but if I could only use one it would be the parrot darter.
N.ShoreFisher 03-19-2013, 04:51 PM not a plug, my tsunami 7" swim shad in mack pattern. Thing loves to get eaten!
PRBuzz 03-19-2013, 04:57 PM The bilge plug!:rotf2:
Stewie 03-19-2013, 04:57 PM At the canal or in the breachways it would be a yellow darter made by my friend Chuckie. In boulder fields, a little Danny From Matt, on sand a needle from Neil. Gift plugs are the best plugs, especially if they work better than anything else I could get.

zimmy 03-19-2013, 08:26 PM Used to be the 7" red fin, next came the sardine yozuri darter, then I met the plastic nb bottle darter, toss in the sp. Each of those have been the lure that caught when nothing else would. I can't pick one. I could only have one, the sp would win for its versatility, casting prowess, etc.
East Tide 03-19-2013, 08:28 PM 4.5 oz skin jig.
joebaggs99 03-19-2013, 08:46 PM Canal Bucktails

blondterror 03-20-2013, 07:08 AM Parrot 2 oz Musso dartah repro... 3/0 6x belly, dressed siwash 5/0 tailhook .... its got catchin mojo
afterhours 03-20-2013, 07:14 AM shallow boulder fields- sr jointed eel swimmer or needle
canal day- jr blip pencil
canal night- sr swimmer
Got Stripers 03-20-2013, 08:25 AM I honestly haven't tied a plug on in probably 3 years, I fish exclusively with plastic from 100-1 foot of water, rigging changes obviously from weightless to 7" splittails on 5oz jig heads.
If I was limited to one rod in one hand and what I could grab with the other, I'd grab one bag 6" half jerks in sand eel and a bag of 3/4oz Kalin Ultimate jigs heads. Unless it were spring, then the 4" split tail and 1/2oz heads would definately be my choice.
Rockfish9 03-20-2013, 08:35 AM Mouth of the river ( trolled on wire) black goo-goo with gold scale... beach.. toss up between eel skin needle and my slim profile sand eels swimmer..river parrot darter in the rips.. jointed eel plug on the flats...
BigFish 03-20-2013, 08:47 AM That....is a tough call? I am a topwater junkie so any pencil (spot dependant on size) is what I love to draw vicious strikes and also my "Blitz Seeker" by day.......night time......I like to "Prey"!:uhuh:
No real go-to plug. Always depends on where and when. Other than bway/canal, it's usually a swimmer or plastic. This year, it'll be something I grab out of timmah's bag since he's been building enough for three people. :)
Rockport24 03-20-2013, 10:29 AM I like Big Fish's blitzseeker during the day, and then I have to jump on the 7 inch loaded redfin train at night...
johnny ducketts 03-20-2013, 11:04 AM :mad:I was going to say spooks, from the beach, but now after my Cutty experience, I am going to go with a pencil.
still never caught on a needlefish...:cens::cens::cens::cens:
The Dad Fisherman 03-20-2013, 11:06 AM I like Big Fish's blitzseeker during the day, and then I have to jump on the 7 inch loaded redfin train at night...

Sgt Striper 03-20-2013, 06:28 PM Bottle, wouldn't leave home without one!!
Rmarsh 03-20-2013, 06:40 PM SP Minnow.
I bring a variety of plugs with me but they don't get used much.
landwave 03-20-2013, 06:57 PM LS69 Yellow Darter of Death
Rob Rockcrawler 03-20-2013, 06:58 PM Probably a smokey joe redfin. It has caught more than just about anything else. I dont know what the hype is about bone, i guess its a confidence thing.
Saltheart 03-20-2013, 07:52 PM For the night I like a black Danny Swimmer or a black Needlefish. In the daylite nothing beats a nuetral boyancy to slightly sinking popper with a sand eel type teaser. Now that's just for plugs. In fact no plug would be my first choice at night but a popper with teaser still might be my choice in the day time
Chunkah 03-20-2013, 09:38 PM Since we can only pick ONE go to plug I have to say a pencil...nothing like watching a fish miss it only to come back for it and smash it.
BranfordJeff 03-21-2013, 12:16 PM Bucktail. I've caught big and small, dozens of species, all over the place on that. If I could only have one lure type piece of fishing gear, that would be it. Even a plain bucktail, you can hang bait off it, or put a strip of torn t-shirt to make a trailer, whatever. Catching-est single piece of gear ever invented for fishing, IMO.
shadow 03-21-2013, 03:50 PM In the past a 7" bone red fin was my favorite plug I only fish it loaded when I need the extra casting distance. But lately iv been taking a stick Shad out of my bag first most of the time. They cast great fish love them day or night they produce.

ThrowingTimber 03-21-2013, 04:45 PM God I love topwater but darters and needles catch more and bigger :( Its a sad truth :) I'm ok with it though :)

jimmy z 03-22-2013, 08:12 PM darter
convaonly 03-24-2013, 05:08 AM parrot color polaris popper
rphud 03-24-2013, 11:11 AM redfin/bomber type with Stick Shadd a close second, but sometimes first.
Monarca 03-24-2013, 11:25 AM Its hard to pick just one "go to" plug for the entire season, however I prefer the Sluggo. If the Sluggo isn't considered a plug then I would say a pencil popper or a Super Strike "heavy" Bullet.
luv2flyfish 03-24-2013, 11:49 AM yellow afterhours darter,ls69 darter both work great for me
MVbluefish 03-24-2013, 04:11 PM SS littleneck is always a top consideration for me.

eskimo 03-24-2013, 09:31 PM Needlefish or any large surface swimming plug.
bigpopper 03-27-2013, 12:14 AM Hairaiser or a castmaster gets em' almost anywhere. Favorite plug to fish would have to be any Pikie type lure:for sheer slo-mo takes. Nothing like being elevated and watch a big bass come up and suck one in.
