View Full Version : What is your one go to plug?

I know it makes a difference where you are fishing, but what is your first plug you think of that has caught you the most fish or you have the most confidence in?

For me, on the beach lately it's a needlefish plug, years ago pre-seals taken over it used to be the yo-mag darter but I don't fish way out there any longer.

For the canal, it's a jig, a mr.pogie eelskin jig to be exact.

Boat it would be a howdy or spook, love to see them hit on top.

Bruce,
If you're talking specifically plugs and not metals, bucktails, or soft plastics I'd also have to say the loaded 7 inch redfin - chicken scratch pattern for all around versatility. Best $8 bargain in surfcasting.

I could go all season with these six, but if I could only use one it would be the parrot darter.

At the canal or in the breachways it would be a yellow darter made by my friend Chuckie. In boulder fields, a little Danny From Matt, on sand a needle from Neil. Gift plugs are the best plugs, especially if they work better than anything else I could get.

Used to be the 7" red fin, next came the sardine yozuri darter, then I met the plastic nb bottle darter, toss in the sp. Each of those have been the lure that caught when nothing else would. I can't pick one. I could only have one, the sp would win for its versatility, casting prowess, etc.

I honestly haven't tied a plug on in probably 3 years, I fish exclusively with plastic from 100-1 foot of water, rigging changes obviously from weightless to 7" splittails on 5oz jig heads.

If I was limited to one rod in one hand and what I could grab with the other, I'd grab one bag 6" half jerks in sand eel and a bag of 3/4oz Kalin Ultimate jigs heads. Unless it were spring, then the 4" split tail and 1/2oz heads would definately be my choice.

No real go-to plug. Always depends on where and when. Other than bway/canal, it's usually a swimmer or plastic. This year, it'll be something I grab out of timmah's bag since he's been building enough for three people. :)

For the night I like a black Danny Swimmer or a black Needlefish. In the daylite nothing beats a nuetral boyancy to slightly sinking popper with a sand eel type teaser. Now that's just for plugs. In fact no plug would be my first choice at night but a popper with teaser still might be my choice in the day time

Since we can only pick ONE go to plug I have to say a pencil...nothing like watching a fish miss it only to come back for it and smash it.

Bucktail. I've caught big and small, dozens of species, all over the place on that. If I could only have one lure type piece of fishing gear, that would be it. Even a plain bucktail, you can hang bait off it, or put a strip of torn t-shirt to make a trailer, whatever. Catching-est single piece of gear ever invented for fishing, IMO.

In the past a 7" bone red fin was my favorite plug I only fish it loaded when I need the extra casting distance. But lately iv been taking a stick Shad out of my bag first most of the time. They cast great fish love them day or night they produce.

Its hard to pick just one "go to" plug for the entire season, however I prefer the Sluggo. If the Sluggo isn't considered a plug then I would say a pencil popper or a Super Strike "heavy" Bullet.

Hairaiser or a castmaster gets em' almost anywhere. Favorite plug to fish would have to be any Pikie type lure:for sheer slo-mo takes. Nothing like being elevated and watch a big bass come up and suck one in.
