Green Light 03-28-2013, 08:54 PM Question.
Let's say you are out on a remote rock. You slip. The next thing you know, you are floating towards the Azores.
What technology would you want to have on your belt? A VHF/GPS thingie? One of those "Spot" thingies? iPhone in a water proof bag?

Mr. Sandman 03-29-2013, 09:04 AM a little common sense about standing on a submerged rock in a remote locale at night for a fish. You should assume you are on your own and no one is coming to get you.

And a pretty penny too. I'll stick with the low tech options.
fishbones 03-29-2013, 09:18 AM Even if you have your phone and it's dry, are you going to be able to make a call if you're struggling to stay afloat while drifting out to sea? I'm not sure I want to rely on that.

Good point!
Using an iPhone in a water proof bag with gloves may a bit challenging.

Common sense would tell me not be on the rock in the first place! Hence, my question in not about common sense; it's about having a contingency plan (aka "plan B"). :-)

Really? Humm. Why so?

I had to Google "EPIRB"! He..he..he..
EPIRB = emergency position indicating radio beacon.

Green Light 03-29-2013, 10:02 AM SPOT when down on you? OMG. Not cool!!!
Yah. No Facebook for me while I am fishing! ;-)
Thank you for the tip!
Rockport24 03-29-2013, 10:06 AM I think if you really want a plan B a floating VHF is not a bad idea and maybe somekind of waterproof strobe. I have both on me while kayak fishing at all times.

You tell Siri to call for help and watch porn until someone arrives. Your not thinking clearly today
Iwannakeeper 03-29-2013, 11:29 AM For going off shore - I picked up a Personal Locator Beacon or PLB. small cell phone sized EPIRB w/ a strobe
fishbones 03-29-2013, 11:29 AM You tell Siri to call for help and watch porn until someone arrives. Your not thinking clearly today
Siri and I had a falling out and are no longer on speaking terms.

Does she double as a PFD?
Mr. Sandman 03-29-2013, 12:57 PM She probably qualifies as the equivalent of 4 man "passive flotation device" .
Pete F. 03-29-2013, 02:48 PM I bet she would go down easy!
Saltheart 03-29-2013, 03:11 PM Today the pretty standard lost at sea gear is an epirb and a strobe.
A pair of fins will increase your range and ability to swim in any direction by about 10X or more.

Isn't that the plan?:uhuh:

The very best thing that could save your life doesn't go on your belt. It's an inflatable pfd. As long as you aren't swimming out to rocks I would get a Auto hydrostatic model. Also I would put an ACR Rapidfire pull-pin inflatable pfd strobe rolled up in it. If you swim a lot, get a manual inflatable.
Redsoxticket 03-31-2013, 09:37 PM The same pfd can be set for auto or manual by removing the bobbin or pill, like you.

Swimmer 04-01-2013, 08:19 AM I have had a SOSPENDERS for ten years now. Anytime I go on a boat I wear it. Anytime I am going to be standing in moving water I weat it, like the North River and so on. Alwys have a couple of recharge setups as well. It works on manual or auto inflate upon dunking.
Liv2Fish 04-01-2013, 12:06 PM Does she double as a PFD?
She comes with two PFDs....
Green Light 04-02-2013, 09:05 PM A manual CO2 belt pdf sounds like a good plan B!
Redsoxticket 04-02-2013, 09:29 PM The pfd belt may not be a good idea if you top heavy with a large gut unless you can breath out of your $ss

You must go to a different part of Cutty, about 125 miles eastsoutheast is Cherry Grove.

Old school tech. Nice!

Anatomically challenging without invasive surgery. Ouch!
What if it's mounted like a "belt buckle"?
bobber 04-03-2013, 08:52 PM I use a spot messenger-beacon all the time. I can text my wife with it to tell her my status/location and it shows her where I am on a chart too. haven't needed to use emergency button yet though...

I have the same model pfd which is just stored away, out of site out of mind.
The problem I have is that if your taking hits by waves the pfd will need to be rinsed like most of your gear. This will entail undoing the velcro, removing and rinsing the bladder. I've taken to many chances in the past which means my number is next, looks like I will be wearing it more often when near ledges and moving water.

Green Light 06-30-2013, 08:28 PM From a technical POV, the Standard Horizon HX851 Floating VHF/GPS, strobe, and distress calling looks like the best value.

I keep one of those on the boat as backup radio.
wdmso 07-01-2013, 08:43 AM Batman utility belt type Anchor holds you in place until the tide changes or the Sun comes up.. or the wife who you assume loves you calls the coast guard when you don't come Home

That looks like a great ditch bag upgrade to the very basic and outdated unit I have in there now.
macojoe 07-01-2013, 08:49 PM PFD and a EPIRB make it easier for them to find the body!
