Andy, I hope they are alright , maybe just got routed someplace else hopefully.

I heard this on the radio on my way home the whole drive back from Weston, on rt 24 while I was headed south, about 7-8 cruisers were speeding towards Boston on the northbound side.
Unbelievable what kind of sick people would do these kinds of things:smash: just awful.

Thoughts and prayers for those injured or killed

Of course this is an act of terrorism. What's not being mentioned is if it was carried out by Muslim extremists.

Cowards indeed!
I was working on a rooftop all day in Somerville and Didn't hear or see anything.
On the way off the roof my phone was ringing off the hook,my boss,my wife and parents....
The second explosion location is a building I do a lot of work at.
Driving South bound on the X Way traffic was very thin on the North bound(heading into Boston) Stateies, ambulance's under covers were on the double.

Who ever is responsible for this cowardly act should be fillet.

Terrible tragedy...many survivors with missing limbs.

I always thought it would happen at a football game where many congragate.

When this calms down who will be blamed for sleeping on the job...where were the bomb sniffing dogs before and during the Marathon?

FishermanTim

The act is nothing but pure terrorism.

Those who carried it out are what will have to be determined.

Remember that the Oklahome City bombing was by a homegrown terrorist faction.

Things that make me wonder are that it was Marathon Monday, it is April 15th (tax day) and I believe today is Patriots Day.

Unfortunately sickos will attach themselves to whatever day/event will give them the most coverage.

Whoever/whomever is responsible, their lives aren't worth spit WHEN they are caught!

My prayers go out to all the INNOCENT victims that were affected by this act of cowardice.

I work in Cambridge and take the train out of North Station - decided to walk to North Station rather than the subway ... in part because the Green Line was shut down in sections and it's only a 20-minute walk ... but on that walk there was a lot of confusion, police cars racing from other towns to the scene, other police cars racing in opposite directions, when I got near North Station, cars were undergoing searches at the Garden ... crazy stuff.

But I must say, that the police and fire department did not hesitate to get to the scene to help the injured and ensure people were protected ... despite the criticisms above about no-bomb sniffing dogs being used, I am grateful for our police and fire departments coming to help ... every day these people put themselves in harms way to help protect us ... can't say thank you enough to them.

IMHO - We should be thanking them, not criticizing them.

I don't think anyone was "sleeping on the job". Someone probably strolled in with a couple of bags, dumped them in trashcans, then flipped a switch. Quick. How does one defend against that?

The entire area was searched by dogs before the race, anyway.

God didn't want us to have guns. He only wanted us to Love one another.
The "God-given right" thing,..... I've always thought to be a misunderstanding of the Declaration of Independence due to the "unalienable rights" mention from our "Creator".

My little sister works for BAA and was right near this mess when it happened.
She had been sitting in the bleachers directly above one of the un-detonated devices that was found (it was found 30min after she moved). Watching the media coverage sure feels different when you have a personal connection.

So scary.

One of those Founding Fathers Guppy claims would have provided "the instructions on how to change" once said: "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

When people start saying "yes, please take my rights if doing so will provide me the illusion of being safe", the people that commit these acts of terror have won. During Katrina, most civil rights were stripped away. Illegal state-sanctioned confiscation of weapons took place and then the only people left with their weapons (law enforcement) were also the ones killing innocent people on bridges and in their homes.

I work about 200 yards from where the bombs went off. Building shook when the bombs went off, and I got to the window and saw the smoke rising. Have been through that section of Boylston for many years of marathons, but luckily not this year. Sadly, I remember thinking a year or two back that if I was a bad guy it would be a perfect place to take out a lot of people easily. Looks like the bad guys thought the same thing.

I know gun control is top of mind right now, but as someone said earlier in this thread....there is a little kid dead. Eight year old boy, same age as my youngest son. Other kids' parents are dead. There are a bunch of people missing arms and legs. Save the gun control debate for another time. To me it's just a matter of respect for people who have died or have had thier lives changed forever.

Peace.

Might not Have anything to do with getting home....150 injured...they may be staying here awhile in hospitals, might want to help families come out here to stay with their injured relatives.

People just want to help, anyway they think they can....giving miles to help somebody come out makes them feel good...nice article in the paper today about people offering up their homes for people to stay if they need to.....probably not to many will take them up on it...still makes people feel good that they offered....

They are reporting that the devices were made from pressure cookers with metal and ball breeaing for debri.

That should help in narrowing their search.
Add to that any video footage from the stores on that street and they should hopefully be able to find who the culprits are.

I would imagine that they could be able to figure out what brand/model of cooker was used, and look for possible purchase points and go from there.

forensic science is definitely a big help in these matters.

Not that it means anything, but pressure cooker bombs have been used by terrorists in the past. Still curious to hear if anyone will claim responsibility for this.

I think the pressure cookers are usually used as rudimentary timing devices.

I bet those responsible will get caught. That's not the same thing as someone taking responsibility before getting caught.

I'm trying to imagine how much, and what kind, of explosive propellant would be required to get ball bearings (or small lead shot, or whatever), moving at sufficient velocity to take off limbs, bone and all. The femur is one of the biggest, and strongest, bones in a human body. I've seen the results of a 12 gauge blast taking off a hand, but a femur?

It had to be one powerful device, I would think. I'm kind of doubting that it was the handiwork of a rank amateur.

I was watching one of the talking heads last night stating this was a "low power" explosive device which would propel a ball bearinbg at 7,000 feet per second, as opposed to a high powered explosive propelling an object at 25K feet per second. The head then stated a rifle shot is on the order of 1200-1300 feet per second (familiar with this).

This stuff is well out of my wheel house and I have no idea how accurate the talking head was but it lines up a bit with what is being discussed. So take it for what it is worth and what you paid for it ;)

black powder is sufficiently powerful enough and either cheap or easy to make. from what i've been told, this is amateur woodsman homegrown stuff. the other side likes the high speed binaries that cause massive internal trauma without the need for shrapnel.

I agree.
I don't want to sound all "NCIS" here, but when an overseas terrorist group pulls a stunt like this, there is usually some kind of "chatter" between members and between cells (for attack coordination).
There has been no mention of any communication/chattr involving this attack. No one has laid claim to this one as well.

I can only imagine that whatever propellent that was used was probably tested for its effectiveness beforehand. That would also explain the pressure cooker device. Low power explosive in a pressure cooker will build up sufficient force that when released, will increase the force of the blast.

Maybe when they get those responsible we can try our own experiments with "propellents" on them?

Swimmer

It doesn't have to be C 4 to cause all that damage. When the bomb goes off inside of the pressure cooker it builds force prior to causing the cooker to expand and as we all know, blowup. How large the amount of propellant used, the greater the demand for oxygen, more oxygen needed, greater area of destruction. I think we'll find thats where the blast force/propellant enters into it. Low speed bombs, 3300 ft. per second or less, can be extremely damaging. There were nails, BB's, bearings and what not inside of these packages. See the damage to the bodies that were done, and you'll know longer wonder why so many limbs were lost in the civil war from ball bearing being fired from muskets at low speed.

I have deep admiration for those peole who ran into the fire, so to speak, and did not shrink when it was time. There were a huge number of very courageous individuals that acted without concern for themselves after the bombing. Police and firefighters, and EMS are paid to act, but the civilians to do what they did without thought of injury to themselves is an extremely selfless act.

When the POS is caught, he'll be charged federally, so a more appropriate justice will be handed down.

I agree as well, and when the person/persons are caught, and are found guilty in accordance of the law, they are show the same measure of compassion and mercy they showed (to the innocent victims) when they get the death sentence. I say this crime is definitely worthy of the chair, or getting strung up as it were.

2X that Westport.

:deadhorse:

I'm planning on hitting a small stocked trout pond after work, with hopes of landing one of the 3-5 lbers that may be still there after Sundays's derby.

I was there when the private fishery truck showed up to dump the 100+ trout in on Saturday. There were about a dozen large trout amongst the remaining cookie-cutter fish.

I'll see how things go tonight.

And then there's this weekend with the possibility of either kayaking or surfcasting.

It's pretty wild how they supposedly id'd this guy. Had a shot of him on a surveillance tape and it showed him on a cell phone. They went and pulled all the logs of calls made during that time frame which originated in that area. Then they cross referenced the names with pictures of the people who owned the phones and matched it up to the surveillance pics.

Unless the guy agreed to it, you can't "just deport" someone. Detainees are entitled to a hearing before they can be deported. Even if the guy is totally illegal, once he's taken into custody, he's entitled to a first hearing in front of an immigration judge to determine if he's suitable for release pending a final deportation hearing.

Until there is a news conference where they show the persons pictures and mug shots, I don't care what the media says of does since they are really only reporting what they think will get them the best ratings.

Of course every station is showing just about the same thing as every other station, so they have to resort to a little "embellishing" of the story to get their ratings. So what if they comdemn an innocent man by false reporting his involvement in this crime, Ooops! We'll just retract our statement and everything will be fine, right?.

I wish the media had as much integrity as they claim they have, and not as much as a crackwhore looking for their next fix!

The current media-driven drivel has caused me to change where I get my news to guarantee integrity, accuracy and class......which is NO WHERE!!!

I take every bit of news with a heavy dose of skepticism, because there are no worthy news outlets left, short of writing the news yourself!

The Associated Press has identified them as being from Chechnya.....

"The suspects were identified to The Associated Press as coming from the Russian region near Chechnya, which has been plagued by an Islamic insurgency stemming from separatist wars. A law enforcement intelligence bulletin obtained by the AP identified the surviving bomb suspect as Dzhokhar A. The problem with a person like this is that with the feeling of the world closing in on him, he may decide to do something rash and really destructive as a "final blow" before he dies.

Secondly, if the report of his dead brother possibly training as a boxer to try and become an olympian, imagine if he had succeeded and did something like this at the Olympics?

I hope they do find the living brother and keep him alive long enough to get whatever info they can BEFORE he is executed (through legal process).

If he does survive, and he is sentenced to anything other than death, then we truly have given up (but we don't realize it).

I don't want to play the blame game or the "what if" game, but if these terrorists had access, or had friends working with them, surely they would have been able to figure out well before the FBI news conference that they were on a short list of suspects. They would have had time to formulate some exit-strategy for when they would be approached by the authroites.

All the instant media sites, all the interactive social media sites and all the news media clammering to be the first to "break the case" should shoulder some of the responsibility for broadcasting information that may possibly cost more people's lives.

Sure, we all want to know the facts, wea ll want to know NOW, before anyone else, but at what opossible cost?

Now we have news stations and papers tripping all over themselves, reporting bogus information, asking the same questions over and over and over again all in the hopes of getting "the scoop".

I found myself turning off the tv, the radio, and tossing the newspaper.

That's just how I feel with the amount of scavenging going on with the news media. I only wish they were as "dedicated" and "committed" to reporting good news, but we all know that won't bring in the ratings as a good disaster will.

Good idea, and apparently the authorities feel the same... All the scanner links for the app I have were made unavailable not long after my last post... I heard they nipped it at the source and "shut down" (?) the scanners... Don't really know what that means. I can see how they would have the ability to make the streaming web links unavailable, but don't see how they could block old school, home-based, plug-in radio scanners... Did they switch to a special frequency, and if so, why not use it all the time, as it would seem to only benefit the criminals and the overly curious? (I'll admit falling under the later in unprecedented cases like this... I do not "tweet" as it were, and won't be to hard on myself unless I hear this guy is on SB... :-S)

Even down here near RI there were cops everywhere when I took a ride to Swansea about an hour ago... Not going near Dartmouth today, that's for sure...

UMD is the cheapest school in the UMass system, and he apparently had a scholarship. Don't know whether he was living on-campus or commuting, but it is possible to get there by public transportation (Dattco bus from Boston to New Beige, SRTA bus to UMD). Most of the media is focusing on him right now, with the brother being dead. I don't know whether anyone is looking into an employment history right now, beyond the fact that the guy on the loose worked as a lifeguard at Harvard's aquatic center. I believe that both of them were living on the top floor of a 3 decker with another brother, their sister-in-law, and a baby. That was being reported this morning, at any rate, with news that the two other adults were "taken into custody". Haven't heard anything since.

For Sale Cuddy with trailer, covered and almost ready to go. Needs a good detailing and maybe a little fiberglass repair. Leaks a little. Cover needs stitching too. All small repairs.

I sure hope not, 10 years is way too long and expensive/costly

although I am still waiting for my classmate Gary Sampson to meet his maker that POS

glad they got him, give him some sodium pentathol and get all the truth out of him then forget to stitch him up, oops, looks like he bled out, oh well,... but that would be too good for him

Not sure about that. They had no money. they robbed a 7-11 then let the carjacked victim go after using his ATM card to withdraw money.
Heard one news guy call them Extremists with a homegrown element, or something to that measure.

I still doubt they acted alone...

Crazy week. Started with Evan (my youngest) one block away from the bombs going off, and ended with Jessica (my oldest) with gunshots and hand grenades in her town streets. It is very surreal when stuff on TV gets this personal. Just glad it's over and hopefully they will be able to chase this down to its roots. Don't know that walking the streets in town will ever be the same. Prayers go out to all the victims and thanks to all the responders (professional and otherwise). I imagine Doc was pretty busy on Monday. Hats off to you! (again) Bob H.

On a side note; I imagine the sweep of Watertown discovered a few meth labs .

Terrorists who are part of a network have an exit plan available---safe houses, a means of being transported out of the area or out of the country, stuff like that. These guys' exit plan? Go home to Cambridge and wait to be identified, then panic and steal a car to try to get away, and toss home made explosives to try to throw the cops off their tail. When that fails, one dies in a hail of bullets, and the other's idea of hiding out is run into a back yard, cut the shrink wrap on a boat, and climb in, leaving a smear of blood along the hull.

Yup, those were two well-trained pros.

I think they were expecting to be free longer than what happened and were going to set off other IEDs. They had them. I really doubt they planned on using them in a firefight with swat teams. They went about their normal lives after Monday like nothing had happened. I think more attacks were planned but they got busted way faster than they had planned.

I think by the time this is over (could be a year or two) , we will find out that the older brother got some but not much training on his last trip to russia. is in contact with others like himself , ie expendable bombers for an Islamic group who's masterminds are in that Chechen , Armenian , Dagestan , Iran area.

I think the older Brother was looking at a failed American dream and was recruited. I think he dragged his younger brother into it. My guess is there is woman involved in the younger ones life that disappointed him and set him on a downward spiral making him a suddenly easy recruit to what his older brother already had cooking.

All pure speculation but I think that in time this is how it will unfold.

Maybe the plan was for them to hang out and take the heat, possibly plant more bombs, giving the brains of the operation time to leave town. The fact that they decided to explode their devices at the four hour mark shows someone had some operational thinking, sick as it might have been. Add to that the suicide vest the older one had I am not convinced yet that it was just two yahoos.

I think the robot knocked over the ladder pealing back the tarp/shrink wrap. Technology also tracked the carjacked Benz since the owner has left his cell phone in the car.

In the end it was some guy curious as to why there was blood on his boat that found him though.

Sounded like they found blood at one or more spots behind a house(s). Kind of curious why they could not track him down from there, but none of the pics I saw from the neighborhood sweeps showed any dogs that I saw and remembered.

Oh, I think they probably knew where the guy was, and what he was hiding in, long before they moved in, and maybe was why they called off the city-wide lock down. If you think about it, it made sense for them to make their move after dark, when their night vision gear, and the big spotlights on their choppers, gave them a huge edge. Always makes it easier when you can see, and the bad guy can't.

Now, one last word. My religious beliefs are centered on forgiveness, and love for one another. I'm not supposed to hate. In the days ahead, you'll be hearing people trying to mitigate things for this kid. How he was influenced by his evil big brother, how he's only 19, and how he is one of God's children, and so on. All well and good to forgive and pray for his soul, but in no way should anything about him be mitigated, let alone excused. I don't know if this picture has been posted here, but I have it saved to my hard drive, just in case down the road, I start to feel some twinge of sympathy. I may ask God to save his soul, but I'll also ask God to let justice prevail, and for him to feel the full weight of human justice.

Just to give some context. #^&#^&#^&#^&head is circled in his white cap. 8 year old Martin Richard is standing on the fence, flanked by who I assume are his mother on his left, and his sister on his right, all unaware that little Martin has but minutes to live, and they they will suffer horrendous injuries. I would guess that the girl a few places over on the right of the picture, with the strawberry blonde hair, sunglasses, red Nikes, and her hand to her mouth is 29 year old Krystle Campbell, minutes away from being blown apart. Note very carefully where that #^&#^&#^&#^&wad chose to place the bag containing the bomb. He could have placed it anywhere. If he truly was some decent kid being influenced by evil big brother to do something he was uneasy about, he could have placed it against the buildings and minimized the effects. He deliberately chose to place it among a group of kids and young girls.

I understand people target other persons for money , revenge , broken hearts , etc but I will never understand the random targeting of people they don't even know. They just want to kill anybody they can. Even the deadliest of animals do not do that , just deranged people.

It looks Ivory Pure that they are responsible for this act. The surviving brother will be tried and the government will make its case.

I guess they just happen to have been there with those same backpacks? They just happen to have made the call the exact time they detonated? They just happened to have the same type of bombs on them during the first fire fight? They just happened to have all those arms and amo? Only an idiot would question whether they did it.

the facts are in...they did it. There will be no defense offered that they didn't do it. That would be stupid. All the defense will offer is reasons why he should not be held responsible for what he did.

It would take a lot more faith to hold onto any chance of innocence considering the evidence to date. Unless you think this in an X Files level conspiracy the sequence of getting run over by your brother after a firefight wearing a bomb vest, admitting the crime to a hijack victim and you're both on camera at the crime scene is well...pretty much shut.

This isn't a faith issue. This is a matter of law. The law will be processed and initial evidence in the court of public opinion does not look good for the last kid remaining. If some miraculous information comes out and proved it is the Easter Bunny, then pink fur will get locked up. But it isn't looking that way.

There is more evidence in the public against this kid than what was out a few days ago when you were calling out the Philly kid.
