Anyone have any thoughts on plastics, pros/cons of each (Shankas vs. Hogy vs. Slugo)?

I am a Hogy fan, a lot because of their rigging capabilities, but also their larger baits are great. IMO they have the best action and somehow they tend to last longer than other soft plastics too. I catch many more fish per bait than I do with others before they are unfishable.

Sluggos are cheaper, you get what you pay for, but if you are on a budget they are tough to pass up.

Shankas seemed to have taken the Hogy double-wide series and made it their own. They are a larger profile which I like and for some reason people tend to use these more for the offshore stuff.

Soft plastics are great and much like plugs it comes down to personal preference.

All good rubber. But IMHO the absolute best rubber out there right now are the Gotstryper baits made by a member here Capt. Alan Hastabacka.His stuff is blowing up. He is all over the local shops and recently teamed up with the Kalin jig people as well. Without a doubt the best selection of colors and sizes available. Take a peek, you won't be disappointed.

I think we will see rubber go illegal eventually. There is way too much of it in use and fish are eating tons of it. And it is not safe. (ever smell that stuff when it is being poured?)

Yes they all work and are all effective. But I think they need to go the gulp way and make it safe for both the environment and the fish ( and eventually people?).

Do I use them?....yes. But I am trying to use them a lot less now. it is just a matter of time before they deem it a form of littering. You would not toss a plastic bag in the water would you? (I certainly hope not)

I use the so-called "green" plastisol. It's supposedly phthalate-free (it's a known carcinogen). But the stuff still stinks when heated. If I pour a lot in one session, I sometimes have to use a respirator. :eek:

i've always felt this way too, especially with the scented stuff and oil impregnated stuff.

A lot of good products but Alan's (GotStryper)rubber in my opinion has the best action, is tough, and has a million color and size choices. Many of the sharpies throw his stuff with very high success. Try some you wont be disappointed.

I was just about to say that. Just got a bunch, I'm hopin the 5" white does a job on the albies this year. The clear ones can soak up sharpies well. They work on largies good too

Thanks all, I will check out the Gotstryper plastics.

I have heard the Shankas swim well on a high speed troll. Any truth to that? Anyone have experience trolling plastics? Are any better than others?

I'm not sure of the high speed trolling, but you always hear of single sluggo/any rubber trolled 'way the f back' in the spread getting hit.
