Haven't seen one of these in a LONG time.....plenty of them today though :confused:....forgot about the croaking.

Wonder if they actually travel in packs or if I just happened to be at the "Get-it-On" hotel as they were checking in.

Brings back memories. When I was a boy about 14 or so they came back strong in the GSB (LI,NY). You could see them when the spawn, they swim in large schools in fairly shallow water and they like the eel grass flats. We use to sight cast to them with fake shrimp or small swimmers. Me and my younger bother would "play" "American Sportsman", He would be Kurt Goudy and I would be Bing Crosby....casting to the (Bing singing) Blu-Blu-Blu sky. :)

Back then they let the netters go in and take them like bunker. I once saw a netter fill his boat to the gunnels and drop the price to 0.15/lb.

A lot of fun to catch and they do taste good. Very mild fish. We use to have them for breakfast with eggs. I hope they make it up my way. I have not caught one since the early-mid 80's.

growing up, narragansett bay was loaded with them up to the high teens. i sure miss them as well as the overall condition of our other fisheries. acres upon acres of pogies with blues on top and bass below. imo we've decimated most of those stocks.

I would love to catch one. Maybe this will be the year if i make it to the salt sometime soon.

Getting reports of quite a few of them in the last few days from Narragansett Bay on up in Massachusetts.

Where I grew up in West Haven, CT, they had good spring ruuns in the mid and late 1990's. I mean, in May, you could target these fish and expect to catch some. Haven't seen that since probably 1999 or so.

Beautiful fish, pretty good eating.

They are a very cyclical fish, hopefully this indicates that the cycle is on the uptrend.

they were indeed back when the stock was healthy. not so now- unless it's a 30 yr cycle. used to be a 5-6 yr cycle if memory serves me correct. another example of overkill by everyone.

I've got some pics from Milford Ct when I was a kid with some.Good size too. I think I got them on kastmaster, around Charles Island. I remember them being pretty common, it wasnt a big deal to catch them

IIRC it was always a ten year cycle.

We used to catch them a lot fishing for fluke in the North Point rip off Block when the blues would stop biting during the tide change.

I remember laying them out on the lawn with the blues and marveling how they would lose their colors by the time that we got them back to Granby.

This was maybe 79-83, and then we stopped fishing for fluke (I think we started to fish for tuna at that point).

I always asked #^&#^&#^&#^&y if we could try one. He said that they tasted bad. He also said that striper tasted bad. We used to give them to the farmer's family who lived next door to my grandparents. Times were tough for them and they always took whatever we could give them.

Lots went back to swim again, though.

I'd like to catch one now and see just how bad they taste. Obviously good enough for breakfast!
