View Full Version : Custom Wood Fish 2013
numbskull 05-11-2013, 03:54 PM OK guys, let's see what gets eaten this year.
Here are a few to start it off.
First is a 30" fish that liked a 5" darter off a quiet shallow beach.
Second a 6" Musso clone and a somewhat better fish that apparently was on its way to P-Town.
pbadad 05-11-2013, 06:14 PM No picture but a 30+in. on a "Numbskull" 5" darter. White. First cast, nevertheless.
lazzyone 05-12-2013, 05:50 AM Had success with pikies last spring, so I replenished my stock with a nighttime color.
JohnnySaxatilis 05-12-2013, 08:26 AM Been catchin most of my spring fish on top with a bigfish 1oz pencil, that counts right? nothing really over 35" but plenty of em. And on the pencil yesterday got my first blue of the season... NOOo0o0oooooo... too early!
N.ShoreFisher 05-12-2013, 11:11 AM Jeeeezzzz guys. Save some fish for us NorthShore boys!! lol I love the "only 35in" comment. Man, I need some fish! Nice fish everyone!
JohnnySaxatilis 05-12-2013, 09:46 PM I'm only good at catchin fish less than 35" So I gotta try and soak up the glory when I can :)
BTW fellas we got lots of blues comin in more every day... I dropped one in the rocks... whoops he'll get out with the tide its fine :devil2:
Swimmer 05-16-2013, 11:53 AM Very cool morning with a water temp equally chilly, my toes were cold standing in the water!
But after making a diligent effort, switching from plug to plug to plug, Larry's 1 oz. pencil came through so I could get my Jones' taken care of.
blondterror 05-16-2013, 01:20 PM This was my first keeper sized this season on a Blondterror plug. One of my canal pencils red head, yellow upper/white belly. Fish was 15 lbs on my boga and 32-33 inches.

Nice fish, Chris. I had a lot of luck with the yellow red head canal pencil you gave me a couple years ago. But, it's a bit beat up from all the fish it's caught, hint hint.:)
blondterror 05-16-2013, 03:50 PM Yo FishBones.... that BT plug you have has great Mojo now... fish it with pride... change the hooks if need be
johnny ducketts 05-16-2013, 04:51 PM Nice Chris.. I know what I'm using,!! the plug you gave me at the fest!
fishbones 05-17-2013, 09:40 AM Yo FishBones.... that BT plug you have has great Mojo now... fish it with pride... change the hooks if need be
I must need to sharpen my plug ho'ing skills, lol. I was hoping you'd put a 2013 model BT in my hands. I'll definitely keep using this one and hope I don't lose it. I've already changed the hooks a couple times.
johnny ducketts 05-18-2013, 02:35 PM No pic, but got into some bluefish this a.m, with a small pencil I finished this winter. Felt good to be on the board.

hardcore from shore 05-18-2013, 05:15 PM Visited my dad Bill's marker that was just installed this week at Bourne National Cemetery Friday then caught a 26" bass (missed several others) that afternoon on his yellow pencil with his signature red throat. Will be throwing a lot of his wood this year ( as usual). He and I always talked about me " visiting" him when I fished to cape, an easy promise to keep. Looking for 1st 2013 keeper on his wood, but I am sure it will come soon.

Bill I am turning up somewhat similar long green needles such as what your dad made for you and was so successfull on the island. Just thought I'd let you know. Peace
Back Beach 05-23-2013, 06:15 AM Got this one yesterday off the buzzbay shoreline on a 3.25oz gibbs pencil copy:
numbskull 05-23-2013, 09:37 AM I'll bet that felt good. A little time for yourself likely comes hard these days.

Back Beach 05-30-2013, 08:30 AM Got this low 20ish fish this morning on a 2.25oz skinny pencil in "great white" color scheme. Pic doesn't do the fish justice, but it went airborne several times during the shallow water battle and was a real pretty fish when it hit the rocks.

fishbones 05-30-2013, 10:37 AM This guy inhaled an OD Mike 2.6 oz. pencil last week. That plug's done pretty well for me so far this season with bass and blues.
chefchris401 05-30-2013, 04:16 PM got a bm clone from Kurt goette from the other site, hes the guy who runs their spring fling donation/fundraiser
took it for a test this am and it worked great,
19" and 39" fish, both for daves tourney

Watch out. This daytime plug fishing will spoil you.
nightfighter 06-01-2013, 06:32 AM Always been a fan of Bigfish pencils, so did some over the winter and tweaked them for what I wanted. Second cast from the dock fooled a just legal fish.
BigFish 06-01-2013, 07:11 AM Wow......thanks Ross I think I am blushing! Love to see some pics of your work!:uhuh: Congrats on the catch! It does not get old does it?!!!
nightfighter 06-01-2013, 07:24 AM squid colored, little more weight in tail, moved hook hole forward just a touch. But it is still a Bigfish!
BigFish 06-01-2013, 07:48 AM How about we call it a "NightFish" or a "BigFighter"! LOL!! Looks great Ross! Go get em'!
thefishingfreak 06-04-2013, 06:58 PM Nightfighter mac patern last years plug fest swap.
Got a bunch of mid teen fish and a few low 20's. this the only one I remembered to take a picture of
Also killed a 30pounder on Christians ballerina. But lost the plug on the next fish.

nightfighter 06-04-2013, 08:00 PM Thanks for posting that Mike! Very cool to see stuff work!
I also want you to know I put a couple plugs in the hands of my friend, Jarrod, who was a survivor of the Marathon bombing, including a few you gave me. He and two of his friends are fishing them while recovering at Shaughnessy! He wheels them out in their wheelchairs! Both brothers lost legs.... Jarrod was more fortunate, but still has a lot of shrapnel in his lower legs.
numbskull 06-06-2013, 06:00 AM Here are a few
First a small fish on a pretty day that ate a pretty plug , one of Ted's (Greek) spooks.
numbskull 06-06-2013, 06:02 AM A 10# fish (good for me these days) that jumped one of Franks (Eskimo) medium skinny donny swimmers (with a downsized lip).
numbskull 06-06-2013, 06:05 AM .....and finally a fish with some shoulders that inhaled a big maple swimmer last pm.
Sgt Striper 06-06-2013, 08:31 AM Nice job George! Some Numby Darters packed in the bag for the weekend. Be there tomorrow night, how bout meeting up?
Clogston29 06-06-2013, 08:42 AM blonde terror needles continue to produce well for me, no monsters but lots of fish

Slipknot 06-07-2013, 06:49 AM George, your darters are amazing
I tried the small one and it has great action, I hope to break it in next weekend
Back Beach 06-07-2013, 10:01 AM This one liked a Numbskull darter too. Thank you George, since Tyler is in school today I figured I would borrow it. I really like this plug:love:.
Nice one Andy. George was kind enough to give me one of those a few years ago. Admittedly, I still have no clue as to how a darter is fished and have never caught a fish on one. Just for reference, how is it rigged with regard to hook size and placement? Seeing I'm off the eel kick there's never been a better time than now to learn something new.
Back Beach 06-07-2013, 10:06 AM Got this hefty mid 20# class fish this morning on one of my skinny brown pencils. Action was real slow where I was but this fish chased it quite a long distance and finally took the plug down after about 10 attempts...surprised she kept with it as long as she did.
tysdad115 06-07-2013, 11:26 AM It's rigged with two cut 3/0 and a 5/0 dressed swash on tail. I love fishing darters. That fish was 42", 26# . Nothing great, but it couldn't resist the plug.

Sgt Striper 06-10-2013, 04:26 PM wow....you guys are putting me to shame....only catching on bucktails right now for me....some wood to come hopefully.
Sounds like a personal problem
Hookset 06-11-2013, 05:48 AM I love these posts every year, so good after a long winter and plug building to see the pictures of fish on new wood. I got this one about a month ago. Friend and i were fishing in a bay which seemed like the dead sea. Tide was absolutely not moving, water dead flat, no birds, lots of fishing boats not doing anything. After several hours we were makeing our way back to the launch when my friend said, that bird has been diving down in that spot for a while, there must be bait so let's troll by it. Bam, fish on... nice wake up call on this 36"er. The cool part is I had been playing around with this small swimmer at around 4.875" that you can see hanging in the back of the kayak next to the wheel.
Good luck everyone, tight lines.
Back Beach 06-11-2013, 11:35 AM Ok, this is getting old...one hit all morning today, low 20# fish on brown pencil. Kind of a repeat of my entire season so far. Nice hit and fight though:
that plug has been a winner for you.

blondterror 06-18-2013, 06:29 AM Another great fish on a Numby 2 oz darter at Cutty on Sat night at high tide. Mark (Just fishin) and I got a private lap dance before I set her free... very powerful fish... gave my ZB27 a nice workout

George is jealous, wonder what that makes me???
and Andy is right, considering the lack of talent, not sure how a needle outfishes a live eel, but it made me re-evaluate the choice of snakes or wood from shore again.
Hope you feel better enough to go tonight Ernie, not to worry I won't be there.

A couple fish caught on Georges needle.
numbskull 10-03-2013, 04:27 PM Here is a fish that jumped on a small flaptail Ted (Greek) gave me.
I had been striking out all day, too calm and clear, but could see decent fish. Tried going small and 3 casts later kaboom. Very cool little plug.
ProfessorM 10-03-2013, 06:35 PM nice one. Ted does make a beautiful plug.
numbskull 10-05-2013, 01:42 PM Here are a couple on a GooGoo Man subsurface swimmer. Worked like a charm in VERY fast current.
numbskull 10-06-2013, 11:41 AM This is a disappointing photo of an impressive bluefish. It is rotated and swinging away from the camera. It was an honest #15 on a Boga. CRUSHED Ted's (The Greek) large flaptail in tight in a boulder field and got foul hooked in nearly 3 kts of current then took me on a slalom run through Woods Hole. Five hours later and I'm still tingling.
Thanks Ted.
ProfessorM 10-06-2013, 01:40 PM sweet. By yourself ? must have been a challenge driving the boat and catching that size blue in that washing machine of current. He had me out there yesterday and I could not believe the water rushing thru there. Unbelievable. I kept thinking we were going to go over a waterfall.
the greek 10-06-2013, 05:34 PM You made my day with those pics. I'll have to get you another one this winter. That swimmer of Glen's you show just above has been getting me most of my fish lately. That is a great plug that covers a bit more of the water column and is the perfect size for most of my fishing.
GooGoo Man 10-06-2013, 06:33 PM Always good to see the plugs working!
Puts a smile on my face :bl:
Makes all the hours invested so worthwhile!
