I know its stupid....but I do not own a watch.

Up until recently, I never felt the need....just going with the flow.

I want to pick one up...there are just waterproof watches, dive watches,
and tide watches.

Been looking at some tide watches...not sure if they are just gimics or
what the deal is....sort of looking at a Rip Curl Trestles Oceansearch....its $100.

I tried to do a search on the site, but came up only this one, which mostly discusses dive watches.

I think I'd prefer a smart phone app. with all of the details. Obviously, not so easy to use while wet suiting but doable with some of the new cases.

The problem with tide chart information is that it's not High and low tides that are key in most places, it's more so when the water starts moving that you want to plan around. If you head to the canal at "high tide" for example, you'll be within an hour or so of peak flow.

I would get a good dive watch and set the bezel pip to the next tide - that and a tide app...

Though one of these days I will get around to build my personal selfwinding tide watch :tooth:

F that! $14, All the watch you need. Damn near indestructible... Swim/kayak/dive/leave it in a bucket of water, whatever. PERFECT fishing watch. Alarm for waking you up at Cutty. Plus you lose it? Big f'ing deal!

This watch is without a doubt the most reliable piece of equipment I own...

I have a smart phone, but hate using it. I don't have the patience for it
even though it is a newish phone. My fingers are always activating the
wrong crap. I work with computers all day, so the last thing I want to
do is use any computer...even a mini one.


I am tempted to follow the $14 route...or at minimum pick up one of
those and another that might offer some tide specific functions.

Most of my trips are on the road, and I have found that most of the
time I end up winging tides...especially when hopping between spots.
It would be nice to have a watch that can be preset with tides at
different spots before and/or during a multiday outing. I think some
of these surfer watches have custom presets....as well as published
tide charts. I guess I will look around a bit more.

I made my mind up.

I am going with a Timex Men's T5E231 Ironman.

Its 45 clams and has the indiglo garbage. Big numbers so my mole
eyes can see the time. It almost gets 5 out of 5 for 452 customer
reviews on amazon.

For the price, I can treat it like a disposable.

Normally I would shell out the coin for a permanent solution...like a
Luminox, but I have never been a wrist watch person. Its hard to justify,
Probably for the cost to change the battery on a waterproof watch, I can
just buy a new timex.

i have a suggestion that's kinda old school, but works for me. Most local tackle shops have those tiny, folding tide charts for whatever area you're in. Just get one of those and cut out what ever month you're in and laminate or plastic baggie it. Easy enough, and it doesn't need replacement batteries or to be wound up! lol

I do that too...

I come in off hours mostly...like when shops are closed. Even with
one of the folding charts, I rarely fish spots listed, so there is
variance.

I was a bit naive initially to think some of these tide watches would
have more data or somehow be more useful. It doesn't seem to be
the case...still have to put the horse in front of the cart, but what
seems to be cool is that some of them once synced to a spot, can
continue predictions for up to ten years. Not sure if this is truly
accurate as it doesn't seem that many people use them.

John, I would buy one. With all of the bespoke watch companies popping up, I might be a good time to create your own watch company. If it has a nato strap, it will sell! Fun venture if I win megamillions or powerball over the weekend.
