With all the rain and when it's not it's humid, my yard seems to have become a breeding ground for mosquitos, gnats and no-seeums. Aside from using personal products like Off is anyone out there aware of anything (i.e., sprays, citronella plants, etc.,) that will repel or kill them on an ongoing basis? I get the feeling the bug-lite just attracts them from my neighbors' yards.

I know this may be beating a dead horse, but try to eliminate any standing water (cans, buckets, old tires, even some foler pots)
Most insect repellents don't repel the insects, but rather make us almost invisible to them. most products work well.

In your own back yard you can also encourage birds to nest in your yard, so that they'll spend most of the day catching insects to feed their young. We have birdhouses in our front and back yards and our insect infestation is dramatically reduced. I once saw a sparrow with a beak FULL of mosquitos heading back to it's nest. I thought it was cool to see them at work.

Anyway, getting back to bug sprays, once again they do work well, but there will always be exceptions to the rules.

DEET, the active ingredient in most bug sprays is the product scientists have found to be the most objectionable to fish. They absolutely detest the smell, taste, and odor.its the enemy as far as getting it on your hands. Those of you (fishermen)who use deet to keep the bugs off of you, HEAR THIS! Don't get it on your hands!!! AGAIN ..... dont get it on your hands! If you touch a bait with your hand that has had deet on them nothing will touch that bait. EVER! so the trick is to have some baggies handy or any plastic bag ,rubber glove ect. to apply bug repellent with ok.

there is a new device for backyards that attracts and kills mosquitos and it runs off propane and works like a charm although its rather pricey. birds do eat mosquitos yes, but bats eat their own weight in insects every evening and are fairly easy to attract .BAT HOUSES ->its just a bottomless bird house with a grab wire mesh
up on top of the inside. The main requirement is that it is attached on the North side of a tree, barn or whatever is available to keep them cool by day.garlic perls or capsules thrown into ponds help to kill mosquito larva in standing water if you cant dump it out.
yards that have no "air flow" need to be thinned enough to have air flow, then the bats will have pathways to fly around in. :D DEET, the active ingredient in most bug sprays is the product scientists have found to be the most objectionable to fish. My mother-in-law sent me an e-mail from a gardeners forumn. They suggested putting a white plastic plate filled with water on your deck/garden. Add 2 drops of Lemon Fresh Joy dishwashing detergent into the water. Supposed to attract and kill mosquitos in that area. I'm gonna try this before I dump a grand on a Mosquito Magnet.

The Lemon Joy in the plate trick surprisingly does seem to attract mosquitos and gnats. I had read that article before. They seem to hover over the plate for a second then just drop into it. Don't know how far away it will attract them.
OK, that being said, anyone got a way to get rid of moles? Of course the mole guillotine would be the preferred way to exact justice for the damage he's doing, but there's too many curious kids around.

So my electron microscope image of a mosquito wasn't bad enough eh?

This close up is the business end of little those rat bastids. So next time one is drilling your neck for blood think about its "straw"..
