Stewie 06-26-2013, 07:50 PM Poor kid just came to my front door asking for a donation. It seems the federal government is considering cutting funds necessary to protect wildlife on the beaches of Cape Cod.
I asked him if he had been to the beaches recently, did he enjoy the smell of seal crap? And why on earth would I want to preserve an area for "widlife"that is more and more off limits to PEOPLE. Might as well burn it down. He left quickly.

Rob Rockcrawler 06-27-2013, 09:11 AM I would have had some fun with him as well. He probably got a summer job working for a conservation group. I saw adds for them hiring in the boston area this summer. I am sure they have an agenda which more than likely will jive with fisherman in some respects. There is noting wrong with educating these kids. I would venture to say they were not given all sides of the story by their employer.

lamigsb1 06-27-2013, 11:44 AM I would not consider it discouraging kids.....this year we have seen multiple kids from the metro west area dropped off in our complex in Plymouth by the same Boston based marketing company.....collecting for charities. One was to stop a pebble mine in bristol bay.....didn't know where bristol bay was....another collecting for vets......tried to tell me I'm not a vet since I served in the coast guard. Thread very groups are telling people not to give to door to door funds speakers since they get less than 10% of what is collected.

Pete F. 06-28-2013, 08:43 AM One of my daughters had a summer job once for VPIRG (vermont public interest research group) It was a fundraising job, door to door, spreading halftruths and soliciting money from people to further their mission. Sounds like the same deal to me.
You missed a chance to educate the kid and besides every minute he spent with you he was not raising money to further the cause. Of course if he did'nt meet his targets he is gone.

Stewie 06-30-2013, 11:58 AM kid was in his twenties. Nice smile and all, accent like he just flew in from Ireland. With a little luck, he'll look into it and make up his mind if he agrees with his employers or not.
I don't like it when people show up at my door asking for money, especially when they are young and probably working for peanuts.
spence 06-30-2013, 03:01 PM I don't like it when people show up at my door asking for money, especially when they are young and probably working for peanuts.
Or worse. True story...
Last summer a guy (who was obviously cleaned up for the role) came to the door selling magazine subscriptions. I told him we're not interested and he went away.
That afternoon my wife tells me about the magazine subscription she just bought. She said it was a little expensive, but he was out of prison (for dealing) and was really trying to get his life back together...his story was apparently quite moving.
So after I got off the floor, I looked up his company and amazingly enough it was a scam. No, seriously...
As luck would have it we drove past him leaving the neighborhood later that day. She explained her concern and he agreed to give the money back, then just drifted away.
My take is that his story was probably legit. Some company rounds these guys up, uneducated and (perhaps just a low IQ to g begin with) and in prison for god knows what. Gives them a place to stay and food and makes them feel like they're doing the right thing...likely had no idea he was being taken advantage of.

I think you're being a bit naive. If this gentleman took cash from your wife for a magazine script, he's well aware of being involved in a possible scam. He knows this *job is not a lifetime career and that he can easily take the "2 for them, 1 for me" approach. What does he have to lose? Lots of scams out there...I'd bet after you got your money back and voiced your concern, the "drifted away" that you saw, was his escape.

Paul, the world is a very complex place. Somebody has to be prepared to straighten things out once and a while.
Besides, Stewie and I have already made private plans to exchange novelty clothing. If it ever happens it should be interesting.

That's certainly possible, but I didn't take it as an act.
I'd think that if he was in on the scam he'd have a story ready, oh, I already gave the money to my manager, you'll have to call the company and file for a refund...or something like that.
While I'm not against door to door activity having these less than savory people let lose in my neighborhood doesn't exactly make me happy.
