View Full Version : Backyard bird watching feast or famine at my house
Saltheart 07-04-2013, 03:58 PM Its hard to believe the different levels of wildlife active in my backyard from day to day. Tuesday , it was like a bird sanctuary with dozens of birds of many different varieties coming and going all day long. Today it looks like the Antarctic with nothing moving out there. I wonder why they are so active one day then nothing the next. The obvious thing would be the heat but it was fairly warm (not 90 but still warm) Tuesday. Any thoughts about what gets them going some days and not others?
spence 07-04-2013, 04:26 PM Tuesday was a night game, today was an afternoon game. Don't think they don't know we're in first place.

lot of berries and things ripening now...they are probably feasting on natures bounty elsewhere when not in your yard
Swimmer 07-06-2013, 06:38 PM I swear i have falcon living somewhere nearby. I have several gorgeous hawks, large and small. But I keep seeing this bird that looks like a falcon. A few mornings it has been sitting in the deck railing, wife saw it. I have only seen it at treegtop level. I should put some leather on my arm and see if it will land.

justplugit 07-07-2013, 07:59 AM I take my clues from the squirrels. Ever see one running around or feeding
on a hot day? Look close and you'll see them laying still high on a branch which
tells me it's time to take a nap.
Once the fledglings are on their own, except for a block of suet I stop feeding until the fall. They need some time to learn to fend for themselves.
Did the same thing with my own kids, once they had a job I kicked them out of the nest. :D
Raven 07-07-2013, 09:46 AM oh phew !
i thought you made them take a nap
on a real high tree branch.....
Raven 07-07-2013, 09:52 AM Saltheart.... we put just 5 pounds of black sunflower seed out
the other day spreading it around to several (been empty)
feeders and the racoons
were back by two shaking them and ringing a bell
that alerts me to there presence. :hs:
Saltheart 07-07-2013, 02:23 PM I don't put anything out. There just must be lots of natural forage back there. I used to have several birdfeeders in the front yard and got an army of finches but one bag of seed came with a bunch of moths in it. they got everywhere. After cleaning up that mess I said the heck with that!

LOL. :)
Think about it though, if it's too hot to eat a nut it's gotta be too hot to work. :hihi:
