Yeah I saw that in the paper last week and thought you derby aficionados would like it.
I
have spoken to some old timers that have fished in all the derbys. They recall the lot of land prize. They said back then no one wanted a lot of land in chilmark...they had to pay taxes on it and it was no prize. Today with lots of land in chilmark exceeding one mil per acre I think they would re-think the tax issue.
The bass fishing from the beach right now is actually pretty good. some decent fish too. If it holds I expect to see more surf fish this year in the 30's and maybe a couple 40's. Most of the fish are in the low to mid teens though. But a lot can change in the next two weeks so as always "your mileage may vary"
Bluefishing seemed to slow down (decent from boats)
bonito are around but not in big numbers (a few from the shore have been caught but not many)
No albies that I know of have been seen or caught yet. (a couple rumors, one from a spear fisherman who said he saw a small school of them) I am looking forward to my annual ultra light tackle albie fix in a big way this year.
nightfighter 09-04-2013, 06:50 AM Their website needs some updating.......esp since I heard the entry fee increased.

On a very sad note, Ed Jeromes' son Joe past away last week at the age of 24. ( http://www.mvtimes.com/2013/09/03/joseph-e-jerome-17128/ )
I don't know if you know Ed, but he is the president of the derby who is normally seen around weigh in during the derby and presents the winners with the grand prizes (not to mention was responsible for re-establishing the derby a number of years ago and molded it around the derbys' substantial scholarship program )...
His son, Joe was a real good kid in all respects. The entire community is heartbroken for their loss.
Ed is a real leader in the Edgartown community, and he and his wife Mary Ann have given immeasurable amounts of time to the derby as well as educational contributions to the island, he was the principal of Edgartown school for a long time (decades, I think).
