View Full Version : Potential nightmare scenario avoided
Last night one of my worst nightmares almost came to life. I was working a darter close to shore when a small fish hit. Instinctively I set the hook and the plug came flying back at me and hit me square in the junk hard, no pun intended. It hurt like a bastid and was sure I had just Prince Albert'ed myself until I heard the plug hit the rocks. I had breathables on with sweatpants underneath. Could've easily stuck myself with the VMCs and the force that was behind them. All I kept thinking about was how am I going to go to the ER with a darter attached to my man region? If I was hooked, I don't think that would've been a situation where I could have pushed the hook through. Ouch. And then I was thinking about how I would've explained to it to people. I mean, my friends and family know I love to fish, but not that much. I swear!
Besides getting hooked in the eye, I think that would be my worst fear. Felt like I had the clap for about 2 hrs, not that I know anything about that. So, has this ever happened to anyone? :devil2:

Once is enough to make you go barbless.

I honestly thought about that after last night's somewhat traumatizing experience.
Once is enough to make you go barbless.
Great point. I'm crushing all my barbs from now on.
Back Beach 09-23-2013, 11:47 AM Stick with eels. Worst case is you get a tail slap across the face. :fishslap:
Either that or don't fish darters anymore.

Maybe you can milk some sympathy out of this experience ;)

I don't think Backbeach feels that bad for bart...
It's not what you think. I've asked BB to fish the outer cape with me numerous times and he's always refused, for obvious reasons....

Hockey is way different hardened rubber flying around waist high. Particularly if you were a defenseman

At least you could have been honest and say you only caught one dink all night!:uhuh:

Eye Balls are the balls you should worry about, they are exposed and vulnerable.
I've put plugs into my glasses when pulling the plug out of rockweed, and also I 've hit my head and glasses with a fly on numerous occasions especially on windy days. You fish long enough there's a good chance your going to get it too so you should prepare to protect yourself. I always wear glasses and now try to remember my shop safety glasses whenever i flyfish. Sight is too valuable to mess with.
Swimmer 09-23-2013, 03:17 PM Don't some masochists have themselves punctured there purposely? If your too far from the ER if this occurs stop in the local tat parlor, have the guy numb you up, push the hook the rest of the way through, and put a ring in it.
