Any suggestions? The only fishing I have been doing lately is chunking off the beach with my 5 year old. Sitting in beach chairs eating snacks looking at lures and chasing seagulls. Its fun I love that he really likes it and we have a good couple hours every time even when we don't catch there is always can be ice-cream on the way home. I can see myself doing more of this in the future and wondering what the "right gear" is for this kind of thing. Mono? Soft rod, maybe an old glass one? I noticed that my current setups were fast and lobbing bait was not their strongpoint. In case anyone wanted to know the score so far Dad tossing plugs zero - Drew with Pogie or mack chunks 2 blues and 2 dogfish....

I do a lot of beach chunking with my kids, it's a fun time. my favorite rod for chunking is a fibrestar sb 1269 - I won it here at tctfn. it casts geat for 4-6 oz plus baits. it's got enough backbone for casting but is light enough to enjoy fighting a fish on. my biggest complaint about most bait rods is that most are too stout and unless you hook up a monster it's like fishing with a telephone pole. check out fibrestar if you are looking for a nice chunking rod

I use an old tica 10' rod. Its my chunking stick, not ideal but it seems to work ok. I would prefer a glass rod so i dont lost my chunk on the cast as frequently as i do but it gets the job done. Its kinda fun fishing with mono again, i forgot what it was like to catch a fish on the stuff.

when I fish chunks (rare), i like the lami 1201m 2 piece. Significantly heavier than the 1 piece which is my go to for everything else.

spinning..you cant beat St Croix Mojo for $ and quality
conv..I use Lami 1321M...but I think this rod is way more than you need for beach with your son

I use and have 5 Lami Triflex these rods work great for me where I fish
they will throw 4 oz. pretty far
altho they are made for braid I use Mono with them and they also work well

I look for used older rods in the BST sections that will handle the weight you want to throw, I use Mono so when the fish grabs the bait there is some stretch before the fish feels the line

If you're going to spike the rod, get an old honey Lami. They are slow, so you won't tear off your bait every cast. They come up for sale used a lot, but don't go for much money.

Those rods were the opposite of wait and bait chink rods. They were old school plug rods.

I disagree, although I mainly use mine for plugging, it does a better job at throwing chunks than any of my fancy graphite rods, which can throw a hook and sinker really far, but leave the bunker chunk 20 feet to my right at the edge of the water :rotf2:. I'm talking about 4 or 5 ounce sinkers, not Carolina 8 n Bait stuff.

If I could only have one stick, it would be an SB121-3M, a little heavy, but more fun than lifting free weights.

The newer graphite / carbon faster action rods are fine for casting baits, they just require learning how to cast them.

Yes, they are able to tear baits off when cast like one of those soft noodles, in fast and hard and out slow . . . That's the problem most people have with faster "stiffer" rods, they try to cast them the way they do a slow action rod and then declare that they suck or don't feel right, or the funniest, I can outcast that POS with my ____________ . . .
