I fished with people using poppers this weekend..... do these really work?? I can't imagine a striper swimming to the top of the water to grab one.....

They sure do work. Think of them as little baitfish that have been driven to the surface by the bass. Once the bass get the bait up at the surface they just eat the heck out of them and your plug too. Usually there will be birds joining in on the surface action getting free meals too.

a popper acts as a wounded baitfish and the stripers feel the commotion and come up to investigate and eat it . great for early morning or late evenings .

Ok, so lets talk colors.
Which colors are best for what? Darks at night, etc?

I am catching stripers every other time I go out fishing on average. I use poppers and rubber duckies. i have only caught stripers on the poppers so far. It is great action and the best fishing in my opinion. Fish these on the ebb tide in the suds, chop, surf, white water. Or where ever breaking water is. You'll catch fish and have a blast as they come up for a fight!

yellow or white work great . But Yellow gets my whistle for morning and evenings .
poppers at night work ( sometimes ) but there are other plugs much more productive .

Poppers.... I love to use them. Fish'em slow for bass, pop...pop...pop...let it sit. Blues will go after a faster retreive. As for colors Slip was right with the yellow, white works well too. I have been using these this year. Good luck, top water action is addictive:D

With the exception of my first schoolie on a Deadly #^&#^&#^&#^&s tin, the rest of my bass (albeit all small) have been on poppers.

I like yellow, pink and white for day and black, black/purple at night.

However, I have this one blue/white plug, with rattle, that blues just DESTROY as the sun is setting. Don't know what it is about that one but I just catch a ton o' blues on it. Lots of fun! :D

Hey Sweetieface, pick yourself up a couple of poppers, try getting a gag's popper cause it floats, try it in the mr bunker finish, works pisah. Also get yourself a chrome creek chub popper which sinks w/no rattle sound, great right as the sun is going down. Also get yourself a one ounce pensil popper, white/red head and just twitch the top of the rod as you real it in. What you want the lure to do us snake back and forth on the surface, don't reel to fast, bass can;t resist!!!!!!!!!   :p

FW, you forgot to tell her the other secret... add the teaser.

Topwater is where I think teasers are at there best. With poppers, the commotion attracts alot of followers, but often they don't hit, the teaser will get alot of fish in those situations. And you get the bigger fish on the fly as often as not.

If you haven't fished them alot, it may be a good idea to start with floaters because they are really easy to use. My wife struggled with poppers like atoms that sink, but she can kick butt with a floater. Not saying that's a female thing, cause FW fishes a popper as well as anyone I've seen... just an experience thing.

Favorite colors are white/blue head, white/red head, and chrome. At night, use black for silouette.

I have also found that when you are getting alot of followers on the popper, but no hits, try unweighted jerkbaits or lipless crankbaits. GS' 5" and 7" split tails do a great dog-walk and you can stop 'em and let 'em sink really slowly if you see swirls behind the lure. Lipless cranks like zara spooks, bagley's finger mullet and others can be really good too. I don't like to use teasers with these cause it can interfere with the walk the dog action.

MikeT, attend the August meeting of MSBA. BassMaster will be on hand to show the masses how to turn their own bass candy from wood. I understand if you see his plugs you will eat them yourself. Should be a great night.

People are telling you all sorts of plus to use but what I do is I take a look at a popper and say hmm If iwas a bass would I eat that does that color look right is that enought noise on that rattle does that sit right in the water is that traielr long enough. There is no wrong way to work a popper and there are no wrong colors they all work but it's all a matter of timing tides and location. The plugs I use would not more or less work for you it's all baout my style of plugging. For example my little smack-it's I drive myt dad nut's the way I work them but I catch fish em and he drives me nuts the way he works my polaris' but I tried his method and he tried mine and it didn't work for either of us. it's all a matter of style. Go to Mike's got to the wall of plugs and find one your comfartable with it's as simple as that. And if it doesnt work trade it or buy another one.
