For the dummy.... Obviously a boat rod. Soft tip? Reel recommendation? Weights? Hook size? Tie up some high/lows or dropper with loop? I'm coming to learn.

yo dummy. I like a rod with a soft tip but enough backbone to get them out of the rocks quick. I use a st Croix tidemaster rated 1-3oz but handles upto 8 oz for a sinker with an abu 6500. weights will be 2-8 oz depending on the tide/spot. for a rig you want your baits to sit on the bottom with 1 or 2 hooks.

I also use a soft tip rod with backbone and an Abu 6500ci as for a rig 3 foot 60 lb leader with loop at bottom for easy sinker change with different stages of the tide with a high low put the first hook inches above sinker loop and second just high enough not to tangle with the bottom hook. I like slow action rods. This year I've been useing my brothers combo's... Shakespeare Tiger Stick jigging rod, perfect for tog fishing and cheap money too. Matched up with a 16 or 20 Torium. I bet the 14 Torium would be sweet also. I like a 4' length of heavy mono with a loop on the end to quick change lead and a large dropper loop about 5'' from the sinker to change up a pre-rigged tog hook. Hooks are about 4 or 5's. Like Niko said, crab resting on the bottom a must. Ross you'll become tog junkie

Contrasting opinion.... New to togging. But I love a Su 1088 cut 2 ft from the but. I can feel every nibble. And more backbone then ill ever need.

Not heavily experienced, but I've done great using an UglyStik Tiger, the heaviest 7 foot conventional, nice, cheap, and yellow.

i like a nice heavy boat rod to muscle the big ones out. i don't know the blanks, so i am no help there. i just know i like 6.5' or 7' and strong. i use several different reels to fill the several different rods I carry, my favorite is probably the shimano calcutta 400. I don't think you need a super sensitive tip rod, i think with braid you won't miss any nibbles. i like to use 30lb powerpro. to that i tie a swivel and about' 4 feet of 30lb flourocarbon with a loop on the end for lead exchange, and a dropper about 6" above that for hook exchange. I like either a 2/0 or 3/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hook. One hook only, not a fan of two hook rigs.
