What are out there for the best you can buy for boots? I need ankle support and good soles, comfortable and even vibram soles if possible. I stand on concrete a lot, kneel down and am up and down a lot too.
I am thinking of some kind of high end hiking boot. I don't need steel toe. I hate heavy workboots like timberland and the junk they sell at places like Bob's. I wear size 14. I thought there was a thread way back discussing this but I can't find it.

Slip, check out Merrell's hiking boots. I have a pair of the Moab series which I love. Super comfy, good support and not a ton of dough. I think mine were around $120. They are Gore Tex too which is a plus. They have a ton of choices to pick from too.

I have been to Moab. Neat place to hike. Hijack...........Anything Merrell in my book is awesome, have a couple of pair of their slipons and getting a pair of their sneakers for xmas.

Slip I'm in the same boat on concrete and hate work boots. Merrell have worked but I like keen better. But IMHO shoes are different for every person

ya I could use arch orthodics whatever they are called, flat feet but not that bad. I wear new balance sneakers now. maybe I should try that foot dr. schools thing at walmart to get some more insoles, but I hate walmart

With feet that big it may make sense to troll the off price shops online like sierra, overstock and amazon. Usually can get great deals on the surplus...

Go to asacks in Buzz Bay, they have your giant goonie goo goo sizes in all brands. They have great prices too. I got a great deal on red wing shoes and work boots.

I like gloucesters style! I am not on my feet all day but I am in my cowboy boots 95% of the time. Many makers have "work boot" styles and believe it or not I am flat footed as hell and my boots are the only shoe type that dont make my arches kill after being on them for any amount of time. Aside from that I like me Keens in the hiking boot category and I do have a pair of redwing loggers that I have had for about 15 years and they are still going strong. My hubby is on his feet all dday and he wears nothing but Red Wings.

Slip, like Swimmer said, Merrell is the lightest and most comfortable imo.
For a light comfortable sneaker try on a pair of Under Armors.

boots in size 14 are a challenge to find i'm sure....

Just like running shoes, for COMFORTABLE hiking boots hit EMS/REI (both in RI) and try some on.

You can listen to people expounding the brilliance/lightness/ruggedness of every brand on earth, but if they don't fit you right, you'll never be happy.

Redwing...hands down. I am also on a concrete floor a lot and a few years back I switched to the 914 from the 944 and have been very pleased. They have a gum sole that wears like iron. These are 2 years old and are not yet through the original textured part of the sole. Although a bit pricey at $264 for the uninsulated model, which I have. Never had my feet get cold either. I use these all winter and never had a problem. These are also water proof and are my hunting boots as well.

Wore Timberlands for years....then I got persuaded to try Chippewa's. Wow....what a difference. Won't go back to Timby's.
Comfy, 400 gram thinsulate, waterproof, vibram soles....about the same $$ as Timby's.

I have Chipawwa loggers that are the most comfortable shoes or boots I have ever owned.
Don't bother with Dr Scholls inserts. Get Spencos. Usually that will fix any issue I have if shoe is still on good shape and just need inserts.

For light hikers I've always liked Garmont, but like lik says fit trumps brand.

Rav, try Under Armour socks with a Gortex boot.

So true....everyone can suggest their favorites but ultimately you need to take suggestions and go with the one that feels the best on your foot. There is nothin like a quality boot either way. I dont have a lot of shoes compared to most women (yeah, I know) bt when I buy a pair of boots for $200-$300 and wear the hell out of them its still cheaper and more comforatble that 10 pairs of $50 boots that hurt my feet, knees, hips.....just saying. Food for thought.

I've had good luck with KNAPP shoes for fifty years. Since then they were sold, moved to China ,made crap, then taken over again , brought back to the states and are making a nice work shoe

I have been wearing Vasque boots for hiking for decades. I now have a pair of Wasatch GTX that are 2 years old and they are very comfortable but are starting to split at the soles. I have used them strictly for hiking and they have seen quite a bit of use but are not worn. It is a defect. Quality is not the same with these now made in China boots. I'll go to another brand for my next pair.

Redwings Slip- been wearing them for over 18 yrs.
Have 3 prs. i rotate through - 1st pair is about 8 yrs. old- but i don't really work :grins:

Was into hiking backpacking a lot in my younger days. The best advice is go to a real store and try on different high end brands/ models with in the brand with the socks you plan on wearing. Do this in the afternoon too when you foot tends to be slightly swollen. The best boot is 100% the one that fits you best. I always fit into Aslos and wore those but many people like Vasque. As some said, depending on your ethics, once you find a high end pair that fits shop around a bit, look for xmas/black friday sales or online if you feel comfortable walking away from the sales guy. My brother is trying to convince me of Redwings, he swears by em for working. Wears them hunting as well and walks a lot.

After trying many kinds at Asacks and then REI, I wound up with Vasque since they felt and fit the best. Pricey but should be worth it I'm pretty sure.
